About this tour

This is the journey for the traveller who refuses to choose between wildlife and the city — who wants to watch a wild orangutan swing through the canopy at first light and, a few days later, sip a Singapore Sling beneath the ceiling fans of a colonial bar. Over fifteen nights it moves from the energy of Kuala Lumpur, beneath the Petronas Towers, to the UNESCO heritage streets and incomparable hawker food of George Town, Penang; then flies east to Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, for the orangutans of Sepilok and the extraordinary wildlife corridor of the Kinabatangan River; and finishes in Singapore, the most polished city in Asia, as an elegant send-off. James Whitfield guides the peninsular and Singapore legs, and Sarah Ooi — our Sabah wildlife specialist, a trained field ornithologist who grew up on the Kinabatangan — takes over for Borneo. The contrast is deliberate. Borneo is wild and humid; the lodges are simpler, comfortable rather than luxurious, chosen for their position on the riverbank and at the forest edge rather than their thread counts. KL, Penang and Singapore, by contrast, are all comfort: air-conditioned heritage and four-star city hotels, with one standout night to finish. The pacing is honest. We do not pretend the rainforest is step-free — it is not. Boardwalks, boat steps, humidity and uneven ground are part of Borneo, and we tell you exactly what each day asks of you. But every demanding walk has a gentler alternative, the boats are stable, the river safaris are seated, and the city days are arranged around the cool of the morning. It is a grand tour built for mature travellers who want the real thing, comfortably done.

People imagine they must choose between the wild and the refined. This tour says: have both. Orangutans at dawn on the Kinabatangan, and a gin sling under the fans at Raffles a week later. — James Whitfield, Malaysia & Singapore Specialist

Your journey

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur

Private transfer from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to your 4-star hotel in the KLCC district, a short, level walk from the Petronas Towers. James meets you for a relaxed orientation and an early welcome dinner before an unhurried first night to recover from the flight.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre ★★★★
Specialist tip: Resist the urge to sleep all afternoon — a short evening stroll in KLCC Park and an early dinner is the kindest way to reset your body clock after the overnight flight.
Accessibility: Step-free from the airport transfer through the hotel lobby and lifts. No walking required beyond your own pace.
2

KL: Petronas Towers & Heritage Core

Kuala Lumpur

A pre-booked Petronas Towers Skybridge visit in the cool of the morning, followed by the colonial heritage core — Merdeka Square, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the serene Islamic Arts Museum, with its beautifully air-conditioned galleries. A relaxed lunch and a free afternoon at your own pace.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre ★★★★
Specialist tip: The Skybridge and observation deck sell out fast — James books the 09:00 slot so you ascend before both the heat and the queues build.
Accessibility: All sites are largely step-free or lift-served. Merdeka Square involves flat, even paving. The Islamic Arts Museum has lifts to all floors and ample seating.
3

Batu Caves & Chinatown, then fly to Penang

Kuala Lumpur → Penang

An early visit to the Batu Caves (admired from the base, or climbed by those who wish — there are 272 steps, entirely optional), then dim sum in Chinatown before an afternoon flight to Penang. Transfer to your George Town heritage hotel and a gentle evening orientation stroll with James along the lantern-lit streets of the UNESCO zone.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: The Edison George Town ★★★★
Specialist tip: Skip the Batu Caves steps if knees are a concern — the giant golden statue and the cave-mouth view are just as striking from the bottom, and you save your legs for Penang.
Accessibility: The Batu Caves climb is entirely optional; the colourful staircase can be admired and photographed from level ground. The flight is short (one hour) with airport assistance arranged.
4

George Town Heritage Walk

George Town, Penang

A morning heritage walk with James through the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Zone: the Khoo Kongsi clan house, the Cheong Fatt Tze Blue Mansion, Kapitan Keling Mosque and the Goddess of Mercy Temple, with the famous street-art murals along the way. The pace is gentle, with frequent shade and café stops. Afternoon free to rest.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 5 kmHotel: The Edison George Town ★★★★
Specialist tip: Wear well-cushioned shoes with grip — the heritage pavements are characterful but uneven, and a cushioned sole makes the difference over a morning.
Accessibility: George Town's charm lies in its old, sometimes uneven five-foot-way pavements and the occasional kerb. We keep distances short between stops and the car is always nearby to leapfrog tiring stretches.
5

Penang Food Culture & Penang Hill

George Town, Penang

A morning devoted to George Town's legendary hawker food, with James curating a relaxed tasting trail — char kway teow, assam laksa, cendol — at the stalls he rates most highly. Later, the Penang Hill funicular climbs to a cool 830-metre summit with panoramic island views. A free evening to enjoy the hotel's heritage bar.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: The Edison George Town ★★★★
Specialist tip: Hawker eating is best done little and often — James orders single portions to share across several stalls so you taste widely without ever feeling over-full.
Accessibility: The Penang Hill funicular is fully enclosed and step-assisted with staff help. The summit has paved, mostly level paths and plenty of seating with views.
6

Fly to Sabah — Sepilok Rainforest

Penang → Sandakan, Borneo

A morning flight via Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, where Sarah Ooi meets you. Transfer to a rainforest lodge at the edge of the Sepilok forest reserve — simpler than your city hotels but comfortable, well-run and beautifully positioned at the jungle's edge. An afternoon to settle in, with the sounds of the forest your evening soundtrack.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Sepilok Nature Resort ★★★
Specialist tip: Pack a small day bag for Borneo with insect repellent, a light long-sleeved shirt and a compact rain poncho kept at the top — afternoon showers arrive quickly and pass just as fast.
Accessibility: Honest note: this is the start of the simpler, wilder section. The lodge has comfortable en-suite chalets but garden paths between them are gently sloping and can be slick after rain. Staff assist with luggage and a buggy is available on request.
7

Sepilok Orangutans & Sun Bears

Sepilok

The morning feeding at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where rehabilitated orangutans descend from the canopy to the feeding platform — one of the most moving wildlife encounters in the world, reached along flat forest boardwalks. The adjacent Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre follows, then an afternoon at leisure at the lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Sepilok Nature Resort ★★★
Specialist tip: Sarah positions guests on the elevated walkway about twenty minutes before the 10:00 feeding — the angle from the walkway is far better than the ground-level area, and you avoid the last-minute crowd.
Accessibility: Sepilok is the most accessible wildlife experience of the trip: level, well-maintained boardwalks lead to the viewing platform, with handrails and benches along the way. The boardwalks can be slippery when wet — flat, gripped shoes are ideal.
8

Kinabatangan River Safari

Kinabatangan River

A scenic transfer inland to the Kinabatangan River, the richest wildlife corridor in Southeast Asia, and your riverside lodge. The afternoon brings your first boat safari — a gentle, seated cruise along the river as the day cools: proboscis monkeys settling in the riverside trees, kingfishers, hornbills and, with luck, the first wild orangutan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Sukau Rainforest Lodge ★★★
Specialist tip: Sit on the shaded side of the boat and keep binoculars round your neck, not in the bag — on the Kinabatangan the best sightings appear and vanish in seconds.
Accessibility: Boarding the river boat requires stepping down onto a stable jetty and into the boat — a crew member assists each guest by hand, and the boats are broad and steady. Once seated, the safari is entirely restful. Tell Sarah of any knee or balance concerns and she arranges extra help.
9

Kinabatangan: Dawn & Dusk on the River

Kinabatangan River

The definitive wildlife day, gently structured. A dawn boat safari when the river is at its most active — mist on the water, the forest waking, proboscis monkeys on the move — followed by a long mid-morning rest. An optional short riparian forest walk with Sarah for the keen, and a final golden-hour cruise in the evening.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Sukau Rainforest Lodge ★★★
Specialist tip: The dawn cruise is unmissable but means a 05:45 start — go to bed early, lay out your clothes the night before, and let the lodge prepare a flask of coffee for the boat.
Accessibility: The day is built around seated boat cruises with a generous rest between them. The forest walk is entirely optional, on a flat but uneven, sometimes muddy trail — those who prefer can stay at the lodge and enjoy the riverside deck and resident birdlife instead.
10

Oxbow Lake & Transfer to Sandakan

Kinabatangan → Sandakan

A final, gentle morning excursion to an oxbow lake near the lodge — quiet water rich in birdlife and, often, otters and macaques — before a relaxed transfer back to Sandakan. An afternoon visit to the moving Sandakan Memorial Park, and a comfortable night back in a town hotel after the simplicity of the lodges.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan ★★★★
Specialist tip: Enjoy the long shower and the air-conditioning tonight — it is the most welcome it will ever feel, and a fitting full stop to the wild section before the polish of Singapore.
Accessibility: The oxbow excursion is a short, optional seated cruise. Sandakan Memorial Park has flat, paved paths and benches throughout. After three nights of lodge simplicity, tonight's town hotel offers full air-conditioning, a lift and a proper bath.
11

Fly to Singapore — Marina Bay

Sandakan → Singapore

A morning flight via Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, the most polished and accessible city in Asia. James rejoins you and transfers you to your hotel near Marina Bay. An easy evening: a stroll along the waterfront promenade and the nightly light show across Marina Bay Sands, with dinner at your own pace.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The free Spectra light-and-water show plays over Marina Bay at 20:00 and 21:00 — a gentle, seated evening on the promenade is the perfect low-effort welcome to Singapore.
Accessibility: Singapore is the most step-free, wheelchair-friendly city in Asia: lifts, ramps and smooth pavements everywhere, with the Marina Bay promenade entirely level. Airport assistance is arranged for the connection.
12

Singapore: Gardens, Heritage & a Sling

Singapore

A morning at Gardens by the Bay, including the cool, fully accessible Cloud Forest and Flower Dome conservatories. Later, the colonial heart — the Padang, the National Gallery — and a quintessential afternoon Singapore Sling beneath the ceiling fans of the Long Bar at Raffles. A free evening to dine as you please.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Do the conservatories first thing while they are cool and quiet, then save the Long Bar Sling for the heat of the afternoon — peanut shells on the floor and all.
Accessibility: Gardens by the Bay conservatories are climate-controlled with lifts and travelators; the OCBC Skyway is optional. The colonial district is flat and shaded. Everything today can be done at a relaxed, seated-rest pace.
13

Singapore: Cultural Quarters & Food

Singapore

A gentle exploration of Singapore's cultural quarters with James — the temples and shophouses of Chinatown, the spice-scented lanes of Little India, the Sultan Mosque and the boutiques of Kampong Glam — woven together with a relaxed hawker-centre lunch. The afternoon is free for the hotel pool, a spa treatment, or a nap.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Maxwell Food Centre for lunch — James steers you to the long-queue Hainanese chicken rice stall, then finds you a seat while it is fetched.
Accessibility: Each quarter is explored in short, flat segments with the car shuttling you between them, so total continuous walking stays modest. Hawker centres have plentiful seating and are fully accessible.
14

Singapore at Leisure

Singapore

A full, unstructured day to enjoy Singapore your way: the Botanic Gardens and its National Orchid Garden, the shops of Orchard Road, a river cruise on the Singapore River, or simply the hotel pool and a long lunch. This evening, a farewell dinner with James to mark the end of the journey.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Botanic Gardens' National Orchid Garden is flat, shaded and gloriously restful — an ideal, low-effort final morning before the long flight home.
Accessibility: A free day with no fixed walking. Singapore's taxis, MRT and pavements are all step-free, so you can do as much or as little as you wish.
15

Singapore Departure

Singapore

A final, unhurried breakfast before your private transfer to Singapore Changi Airport — itself an attraction, with the Jewel rainforest vortex worth arriving early to see — for your flight home to the UK.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1 km
Specialist tip: Allow extra time at Changi to see the Jewel's indoor waterfall — it is the most pleasant pre-flight wait in aviation.
Accessibility: Changi is the world's most accessible airport, with assistance bookable in advance and step-free routes throughout. Your transfer is private and door-to-terminal.

Fitness & mobility

Pacing & accessibility

Varied but managed pacing. City days in KL, Penang and Singapore are gentle to moderate on paved ground. Borneo is the more demanding section — boardwalks, river boats and some uneven, humid rainforest terrain — but every walk is optional and gentler alternatives are always offered. Suitable for over-50s who walk comfortably for 3–5km and can manage a few steps into a river boat.

Walking

City days: flat, paved, with frequent rests, maximum 5km. Borneo: flat forest boardwalks at Sepilok; optional, sometimes muddy and uneven trails on the Kinabatangan that can be skipped entirely.

Transport

Private vehicles throughout, plus internal flights and stable, crew-assisted river boats. No overnight journeys.

Altitude

Heat / Climate

KL, Penang, Borneo and Singapore are hot and humid (28–34°C). Borneo dawn safaris can feel cooler on the water — bring a light layer. All city sightseeing is scheduled for the cooler mornings.

Orangutans and a Singapore Sling — we had it all

We are both in our late sixties and worried Borneo might be too much for us. It was not, because they were so honest about every day and always gave us a gentler option. The Sepilok orangutans on the boardwalk and the Kinabatangan boat safaris were the highlight of our travelling lives, and finishing in Singapore in such an elegant hotel was inspired. Sarah and James were both wonderful.

Honest pacing made Borneo possible for me

I have a replacement knee and was nervous about the rainforest. Sarah assisted me into every boat by hand, and on the one muddy walk I simply stayed on the lodge deck and watched hornbills instead — no fuss, no pressure. The river safaris are all seated, which suited me perfectly. Penang's food and Singapore's gardens were the gentle bookends. Outstanding value too.

The best of nature and city in one trip

I did not want to choose between wildlife and culture, and this tour meant I did not have to. George Town's heritage walk and hawker trail with James was a joy, Borneo was extraordinary, and Singapore was the perfect polished finish. The lodges are simple but spotless and brilliantly run. Travelling solo, the waived single supplement was the cherry on top.

Susan Carmichael

Wonderful contrast, faultlessly organised

From the Petronas Towers to a wild orangutan crossing the Kinabatangan to a Sling at Raffles — the variety was extraordinary and yet it never felt rushed. The private transfers everywhere meant no waiting and no stress. We particularly appreciated how candid they were that the lodges are simpler; we knew exactly what to expect and loved every minute.

A grand tour that respected our age and energy

Everything was paced for people who are no longer in their thirties. Mornings for sightseeing, afternoons to rest, seated boat safaris, and a genuinely accessible Singapore at the end. The dawn cruise on the Kinabatangan with the mist rising was the most beautiful hour of the whole holiday. We came home delighted rather than exhausted.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How physically demanding is the Borneo section, really?

We are honest about this because it matters. The single most accessible part — Sepilok's orangutan feeding — is reached on flat, maintained forest boardwalks with handrails and benches. The Kinabatangan river safaris are entirely seated; the only effort is stepping into the boat, and a crew member assists every guest by hand on a stable jetty. The one genuinely demanding element, an optional forest walk on uneven, sometimes muddy ground, can be skipped entirely in favour of the lodge deck. If you can walk comfortably for 3–5km on flat ground and manage a few assisted steps into a boat, the Borneo section is well within reach.

Are the rainforest lodges comfortable enough for us?

They are comfortable rather than luxurious, and we would rather set expectations clearly. Both Borneo lodges have clean, en-suite rooms with fans and (at Sepilok) air-conditioning, good local food and superb riverside or forest-edge positions chosen for wildlife access. They are simpler than the city hotels by design — that is the point of being deep in the rainforest. To balance this, the tour bookends Borneo with comfortable 4-star city hotels and finishes with five nights in a 5-star Singapore hotel, so you are never roughing it for long.

Why does the tour finish in Singapore?

Singapore is the most polished, clean and accessible city in Asia — fully step-free, with smooth pavements, lifts and ramps everywhere — which makes it the ideal decompression after the wild simplicity of Borneo. It lets the journey end on comfort and elegance: Gardens by the Bay, the colonial district, a Singapore Sling at Raffles and a wonderful 5-star hotel, before the easy flight home from Changi, the world's most accessible airport.

Will we definitely see orangutans?

At the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, sightings at the morning feeding are extremely reliable — rehabilitated orangutans regularly descend to the platform, and this is one of the best places on earth to see them at close range. Wild orangutans along the Kinabatangan are never guaranteed, as they are genuinely wild, but the river is one of the most reliable places in the world to encounter them, and our guests very frequently do. You will also see proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills and a wealth of birdlife.

Do British passport holders need visas for Malaysia or Singapore?

No. British passport holders do not require a visa for Malaysia (90 days on arrival) or Singapore (90 days on arrival) for tourism. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry. Both countries operate digital arrival cards that must be completed online shortly before travel — we send full guidance and reminders before departure.

Is malaria a concern in Borneo?

The risk in the main areas you visit is low, but the Kinabatangan interior carries a small malaria risk, so antimalarial tablets are commonly recommended for this tour. We strongly advise consulting your GP or a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before departure for personalised advice. Regardless of tablets, the most important protection is avoiding bites — we provide guidance on repellent, long sleeves at dusk and other simple measures, and the lodges are well set up for this.

How much flying is involved within the tour?

There are three internal flights, all included: Kuala Lumpur to Penang, Penang to Sandakan (via KL), and Sandakan to Singapore (via KL). None involves an overnight journey, all are on comfortable scheduled services, and our team arranges airport assistance for connections. Your international flights from the UK are additional, and we are happy to quote and book the most comfortable routing for you.

Is this tour suitable for solo travellers?

Very much so. As a private escorted tour you have your own guides and transfers throughout, and George Town's sociable hawker trail and Singapore's easy navigability make it especially rewarding alone. We waive the single supplement on selected 2026 departures, and our specialists are attentive to ensuring solo guests feel well looked after at every stage, particularly during the Borneo lodge nights.
