Why travellers over 50 love Bali & Indonesia
Bali's Balinese Hinduism — an entirely unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist and animist traditions — permeates daily life in a way that is genuinely moving for contemplative travellers.
Private villa stays in Ubud's jungle — with a plunge pool, outdoor breakfast pavilion and a staff of two or three — offer a level of personalised comfort difficult to find anywhere else at this price point.
The rice terrace walks of Jatiluwih and Sidemen are gentle, flat and extraordinarily beautiful — Bali's landscape photography needs no filter.
Ubud's arts scene — silverwork, painting, woodcarving, textile weaving and traditional dance — offers meaningful engagement for travellers interested in craft and living culture.
The Balinese are genuinely warm and spiritually grounded hosts — the atmosphere of the island is unlike anywhere else, and many guests find Bali unexpectedly life-changing.
Experiences
Top things to do in Bali & Indonesia
1Dawn walk through the Jatiluwih rice terraces
The UNESCO-protected terraces step down from the volcanic highlands in waves of green. Arrive at 06:30 and walk the footpaths as mist clears from the Batukaru mountain.
2Blessing ceremony at Pura Tirta Empul
The holy spring temple allows visitors to participate in melukat — ritual purification in sacred water. Your guide arranges the appropriate offerings and explains the ceremony.
3Sunset at Tanah Lot sea temple
The 16th-century sea temple sits on a rocky outcrop cut off at high tide. At sunset with a cold Bintang, it is one of the iconic images of Bali — and genuinely beautiful.
4Ubud Palace traditional dance performance
Kecak (fire dance), Legong and Barong performances use ancient Mahabharata stories retold through hypnotic movement. The weekly schedule changes — your guide times the best performance.
5Silversmithing workshop, Celuk village
Celuk is the centre of Bali's silver industry. A half-day workshop with a master silversmith produces a piece to take home — rings, earrings or pendants made to your design.
6Cooking class at a family compound, Ubud
Market visit at 08:00 followed by five Balinese dishes — lawar, bebek betutu, satay lilit and black rice pudding — prepared in a traditional kitchen with a fire and clay pots.
7Mount Batur sunrise trek
A gentle 2-hour hike (guide required) to the rim of the active caldera at 1,717m. Sunrise over the crater lake and Agung volcano behind you — a two-hour descent before the heat rises.
8Sidemen valley cycling tour
The eastern valley below Mount Agung sees almost no tourists. A guided bicycle tour through rice fields, village temples and a weaving cooperative is the real Bali.
9Spa and wellness day in Ubud
Bali has some of Asia's finest day spas — traditional Balinese massage, coffee scrub, flower bath and four-hand treatment at a hilltop retreat above the Ayung River.
10Snorkelling at Menjangan Island, West Bali NP
The west coast's Menjangan Island has some of Bali's best coral reefs and is easily reached by boat from Pemuteran. Slow drift diving with manta rays is possible October–April.
Eat & drink
Food & drink in Bali & Indonesia
Bebek betutu — slow-roasted duck
Bali's signature dish: a whole duck stuffed with spice paste, wrapped in banana leaves and slow-roasted for eight hours. It is only available with 24 hours' notice and worth every minute.
Warung culture and nasi campur
A warung (family food stall) serves nasi campur — rice with small portions of six or seven dishes chosen that day. No menu, no fuss, extraordinary freshness. The best food in Bali costs almost nothing.
Arak and Bintang — Balinese drink culture
Arak is Bali's traditional palm-spirit, distilled in village compounds. Mixed with honey and ginger, it is surprisingly refined. Bintang lager, served ice-cold at a beach warung, remains the classic.
Transport & transfers
Getting around Bali & Indonesia
Private drivers are the standard way to get around Bali — the island has no train or reliable bus network. All our itineraries include a dedicated private driver for the full duration. For shorter in-town journeys in Ubud, walking or hiring a scooter-taxi (ojek) are the local options. Boat transfers are used for island and coastal excursions.

Our Bali & Indonesia specialists will help you find the perfect match — no hard sell, just honest advice.
Our promise
Why travel with us for Bali & Indonesia
We work exclusively with family-owned villas in Ubud and the quieter north of the island — no resort corridors, no package-holiday crowds.
Blessing ceremonies and temple visits are arranged sensitively, always with a local guide who can explain context and meaning.
Our Bali team checks villa pool heating, staff ratios and linens personally before each guest arrival — not via a form, in person.
Common questions
Bali & Indonesia travel questions answered
Is Bali still worth visiting given the crowds in Ubud and Seminyak?
Absolutely — the key is knowing where to go. The rice terraces of Jatiluwih and Sidemen, the temples of the north coast, and the village workshops of Penestanan are all within an hour of central Ubud and see a fraction of the visitors. Our itineraries are built around exactly these quieter corners.
What kind of accommodation do you use in Bali?
We use owner-managed villas and boutique hotels exclusively — no large resort chains. In Ubud, this typically means a private jungle villa with a plunge pool. On the coast, a clifftop property with sea views. We inspect every property personally and choose for atmosphere, privacy and genuine Balinese character.
Is Bali suitable for solo travellers?
Bali is one of the most welcoming destinations in Asia for solo travellers. The Balinese are genuinely warm, guides form real connections with guests, and the spiritual atmosphere of the island tends to be unexpectedly moving for many people travelling alone. We have a high rate of solo guests on our Bali tours.
How long should a Bali holiday be?
Ten to fourteen days gives enough time to balance Ubud's culture, a beach resort stay and a few day trips without rushing. We generally advise against itineraries under ten days as the flight time from the UK is significant and the island deserves proper exploration.
