Bali & Lombok: Two Islands, One Journey
Two different islands, two different worlds — Bali's culture meets Lombok's wild beauty

About this tour
Lombok, just 30 kilometres across the Lombok Strait from Bali, is everything Bali was twenty years ago — before the villas multiplied and the rice fields began to give way to development. It is quieter, greener and less visited; its Sasak Muslim culture is entirely distinct from Bali's Hindu tradition; and Rinjani, its sacred volcano, dominates the entire northern half of the island with a majesty that makes even Bali's Agung seem reserved. This nine-day journey combines three days in Ubud — the cultural essential — with a boat crossing to Lombok for three nights exploring the island's traditional weaving villages, pottery towns and coastal temples, followed by two nights on the Gili Islands: three tiny coral atolls without cars or motorbikes, their turquoise waters home to sea turtles and reef sharks and their beach bars playing guitar at sunset. Maya Santos handles the Bali section with her customary Balinese expertise; her Lombok colleague Sari Dewi takes over for the crossing, bringing eight years of Lombok knowledge and conversational Sasak language to the island section.
“Maya Santos (Bali section) and Sari Dewi (Lombok and Gili sections). Sari grew up in Mataram, Lombok's capital, and has guided the island for eight years.”
Why this works for travellers over 50
- The Gili Islands are car-free and motorbike-free — the only transport is horse cart or bicycle, creating an extraordinarily peaceful environment
- Lombok's tourist infrastructure is lighter than Bali's — a genuinely different experience without the crowds
- The fast boat between Bali and Lombok is two hours with comfortable seating and sea views
- Gili Trawangan's gentle snorkelling (sea turtles are regularly seen from the beach) requires no diving experience
- All hotels chosen for comfort and ease; no roughing it
- The tour can be done entirely without snorkelling if preferred — the beaches and atmosphere are reward enough

Lombok: Sasak Villages & Pottery
Senggigi
Sari's cultural immersion in the Sasak world: the traditional village of Sade, where palm-leaf houses and hand-woven songket cloth represent a pre-colonial culture still actively maintained; the pottery village of Banyumulek where terracotta work is done entirely by hand using the ancient foot-wheel technique; and the Lingsar Temple — the only temple in the world shared equally by Hindu Balinese and Muslim Sasak communities, their different rituals conducted simultaneously in adjacent courtyards.

Drive north along Lombok's wild, undeveloped northwest coast — empty black sand beaches backed by coconut groves and forested hills, with Rinjani's caldera visible above the treeline. Visit the traditional Bayan Beleq mosque — the oldest mosque in Lombok, its simple thatched structure dating to the 16th century. Return via the hilltop Pura Suranadi Hindu temple in the Rinjani foothills.

Boat to Gili Trawangan
Gili Trawangan
A short 30-minute boat from Senggigi harbour to Gili Trawangan — the largest of the three Gili Islands and the most developed, though "developed" is relative: there are no cars, no motorbikes, no traffic lights. The island is 3km across. Check in to the Pearl of Trawangan and spend the afternoon snorkelling from the beach (sea turtles are reliably spotted within 20 minutes in the shallows) or simply lying in the shallow water watching the reef fish.

Snorkelling, swimming, a horse-cart circumnavigation of the island (3km circuit, 20 minutes), hammock time or a sunset dinner at a beach bar watching the sky turn pink behind Bali's volcanoes on the horizon. The Gilis operate to their own very gentle rhythm; this is the tour's purest rest day.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Lombok was the surprise of the trip — we'd never considered it before
“We booked this tour mainly for Bali and treated Lombok as a bonus. It turned out to be our favourite part of the whole journey. Sari's knowledge of the Sasak culture was extraordinary — the shared Hindu-Muslim temple at Lingsar was one of the most remarkable things we've ever visited. The Gili Islands are as perfect as a place can be. Two weeks later, we've already started looking at the longer 14-day tour.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the fast boat crossing comfortable?
The Bali–Lombok fast boat takes approximately two hours and operates on a catamaran with air-conditioned indoor seating and outdoor deck space. The crossing passes through the Lombok Strait — in calm conditions (most of the year) it is an enjoyable sea journey; in rougher conditions (particularly during the northwest monsoon, November–March) it can be choppy. We monitor sea conditions and have alternative arrangements (helicopter charter or the slower but more stable inter-island ferry) available if needed. Seasickness medication is worth having as a precaution.
Do I need to be able to snorkel to enjoy the Gili Islands?
Not at all. The Gili Islands are beautiful above the waterline as well as below it — the beaches are among the finest in Indonesia, the sunsets are spectacular and the car-free atmosphere is deeply relaxing. Many guests simply swim in the crystal-clear shallows and observe the reef fish without a mask. That said, if you have never snorkelled before, the Gili Islands are perhaps the best place in the world to try — the water is warm, calm and clear, and the turtles come within touching distance of the beach.
