About this tour

Most visitors to Bali see Ubud and the south — the rice terraces, the beach clubs, the spa hotels. This is magnificent but it is perhaps a third of the island. East Bali, with its great water palace of Tirtagangga and the mother temple of Besakih on the slopes of the sacred Agung, is quieter and more traditionally Balinese. North Bali, with its waterfalls, black sand beaches and the extraordinary high-altitude lake temple of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, is almost entirely free of mass tourism. West Bali's national park is home to the critically endangered Bali starling and to vast undeveloped forest. This fourteen-day journey sees all of it. Five nights in Ubud with Maya Santos provide the cultural foundation; two nights in Candidasa in the rural east reveal a Bali that most visitors never reach; two nights in Lovina on the north coast offer dolphins at sunrise, cool mountain drives and the most peaceful Bali coast there is; before three nights in Seminyak and two final dramatic nights at Alila Uluwatu bring the journey to the finest possible conclusion. For guests who want to come home genuinely knowing Bali — not just having visited it — this is the tour.

Maya Santos has been exploring every corner of Bali for fourteen years and knows the island in its entirety. This complete tour is the one she finds most personally rewarding to lead.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • The north coast at Lovina is the coolest and quietest part of Bali — ideal for those who find the busy south overwhelming
  • East Bali's rural landscape is entirely different from the tourist-heavy south — genuinely off the beaten track
  • All long drives are broken into manageable sections with cultural stops every 60–90 minutes
  • Maya's fourteen-year Bali knowledge covers every region of the island in equal depth
  • The dolphin sunrise at Lovina — traditional outrigger boats at dawn with dolphins leaping around you — is one of the great wildlife moments available in Asia
  • The Alila Uluwatu finale is the most spectacular hotel conclusion of any tour we offer

6

Drive to East Bali — Tirtagangga

Candidasa

The royal water palace of Tirtagangga — its pools fed by sacred mountain springs, its gardens laid out by the last King of Karangasem in 1946 — on the way to Candidasa on the quiet east coast.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Alila Manggis, Candidasa ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Tirtagangga's stepped pools and stone carvings are most atmospheric in the early morning before tour buses arrive. I route the drive so we stop there around 8am — the mist is still on the mountain and the koi are active.
7

East Bali: Tenganan & Amed

Candidasa

Tenganan Bali Aga village in the morning for its extraordinary geringsing weaving; then the black sand beaches at Amed with snorkelling on the Japanese ship wreck in the shallows.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Alila Manggis, Candidasa ★★★★★
8

Mountain Drive to North Bali

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Damai Lovina Villas ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Kintamani caldera viewpoint at 1,700m is extraordinary on a clear morning. The view takes in the inner caldera lake, the outer caldera rim and, if visibility allows, all the way south to the coast. I always allow 30 minutes here.
9

Dolphin Sunrise & Waterfalls

Lovina

A 5:30am outrigger boat departure for the Lovina dolphin waters — spinner dolphins in their dozens leap and race alongside the boats in the early morning light. Return for breakfast, then afternoon to the extraordinary Sekumpul Waterfalls — seven cascades hidden in the jungle, accessed by a short 30-minute walk through the forest.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Damai Lovina Villas ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The dolphin boats go out in a flotilla — arrive back before the heat builds and the boats crowd. Then Sekumpul: arrive at 11am when the morning tour groups have departed and the falls are almost to yourselves.
10

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan — Drive to Seminyak

Seminyak

The iconic Pura Ulun Danu Bratan — the water temple of the mountain lake, its pagoda towers rising from the mist-covered water, one of Bali's most photographed images — on the mountain route south. Arrive Seminyak for three nights at The Layar.

What our guests say

Guest reviews

We finally know Bali — completely

We'd been to Bali four times before, always in the south. This tour revealed an island we had never suspected. North Bali — the dolphins at dawn, the black sand, the quiet — was simply magnificent. The complete tour is the right length for Bali: long enough to absorb the different regions, short enough that every day still felt like a discovery. Maya is the finest guide we've ever had anywhere.

70th birthday present to myself — absolutely right choice

I told my family I wanted one truly great travel experience for my 70th and this was it. The dolphin sunrise on Day 9 was the most joyful hour I can remember. The Alila Uluwatu on the final two nights was so beautiful it made me emotional. Maya looked after me with warmth and skill for fourteen days. I came home a different person in the best possible sense.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the dolphin sunrise guaranteed?

Lovina's spinner dolphins are reliably present in the early morning waters off the north coast throughout the year. However, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. In practice, the vast majority of guests see dolphins — often in large numbers (50–100 individuals). The traditional outrigger boats depart before first light and remain on the water for approximately 90 minutes. The experience of being on a traditional boat at dawn with the mountains behind you is extraordinary even without dolphins, though they almost always appear.

How does this tour compare to the 10-day Classic?

The 10-day Classic covers Ubud, Seminyak and Uluwatu — the essential south Bali circuit. The Complete 14-day adds East Bali (Tirtagangga, Candidasa, Tenganan), North Bali (Lovina, dolphins, Sekumpul, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan) and a more thorough Ubud programme. Guests who have done the Classic and returned for the Complete consistently say North Bali was the revelation — a completely different island experience. If you want to do Bali once and do it completely, this is the tour.

Is 14 days too long in one country?

Bali is unique in having enough variety — in landscape, culture, region and atmosphere — to sustain 14 days without repetition. The switch between Ubud's cultural highland, East Bali's rural quiet, North Bali's volcanic drama and the sophisticated south coast creates a journey that feels like four different destinations within one extraordinary island. Our review scores for this tour are the highest of any we offer, which we attribute largely to its completeness — guests arrive home feeling they have truly experienced rather than merely visited.
