Java & Bali: Borobudur to Uluwatu
From the world's greatest Buddhist monument to Bali's sacred heart — Indonesia's two masterpieces combined

About this tour
Borobudur is one of the truly great monuments of human civilisation — a 9th-century Buddhist stupa built from two million blocks of volcanic stone on a hilltop in central Java, its nine terrace levels representing the Buddhist cosmological journey from the base world of desire to the supreme summit of nirvana. At sunrise, when the morning mist still fills the valleys and the volcano Merapi glows pink behind the monument's stupas, it is as powerful a sight as anything in Asia. This twelve-day journey uses Borobudur as its anchor — arriving for the private sunrise visit (before the public is admitted) and staying at the Plataran Heritage Borobudur, whose garden faces the monument directly. The Prambanan Hindu temple complex (built just one generation after Borobudur, by rival Hindu kings), the royal water palace at Yogyakarta, the shadow-puppet performances of Central Java and the volcanic crater of Mount Bromo complete the Java half of the journey. From Java, a short flight returns you to Bali for six days in the care of Maya Santos: Ubud's temples, rice terraces and artisan villages, a cooking class in a family compound, the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu and three final nights at the Alila clifftop. The contrast between Java's Buddhist archaeological landscape and Bali's living Hindu ceremonial culture is one of the most illuminating juxtapositions available to any traveller in Asia.
“Maya Santos leads the Bali section; the Java section is guided by Ravi Prasetyo — Yogyakarta-born, fluent in Javanese and Indonesian, with a PhD in Javanese archaeological history from Gadjah Mada University.”
Why this works for travellers over 50

- The Java section uses a local Java specialist guide (Ravi Prasetyo) for cultural depth specific to Javanese history

- The Plataran Heritage Borobudur — breakfast in the garden with the temple facing you — is the finest Borobudur hotel available

Arrival in Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta
Fly into Yogyakarta (via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur). Ravi meets you at the airport and transfers you to the Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta, a beautifully restored Dutch colonial hotel in the heart of the city. Evening orientation walk through the Malioboro shopping street and a first taste of Javanese street food.

Yogyakarta: Kraton & Prambanan
Yogyakarta
Morning at the Kraton — the 18th-century royal palace of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, still the active residence of the Sultan and his family, its inner courts and gamelan pavilions open to respectful visitors. Then Prambanan: the extraordinary 9th-century Hindu temple complex, 240 individual temples of which 40 have been restored, their soaring towers (prambans) rising above the Central Java plain like stone rockets. Ravi's architectural context makes the comparison with Borobudur — built simultaneously by rival dynasties — genuinely fascinating.

Borobudur
Transfer west to Borobudur and check in to the Plataran Heritage Borobudur — a boutique resort of Javanese-style garden villas whose boundary fence faces the monument directly. Afternoon walk through the monument and its grounds (open to the public after 6am) for orientation. Evening wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performance at the resort — the traditional Javanese art form that tells the Hindu epics through leather puppets and the voice of a master dalang (puppeteer).

Borobudur at Sunrise — Private Access
Borobudur
A 4am start for Borobudur's private sunrise session — a special access permit that allows entry to the monument before the public opening at 6am. In the silence and the morning mist, with Merapi volcano pink above the horizon and the monument entirely to yourselves, Borobudur reveals itself as one of the most extraordinary things humans have ever built. Ravi's interpretation of the 2,700 relief panels — a complete narrative of the Buddhist cosmological journey carved in stone — transforms the experience into something deeply understood rather than merely seen. Return to the hotel for breakfast and a long, restful afternoon.

Mount Merapi — Drive to Airport
Yogyakarta
A morning jeep tour on the slopes of Mount Merapi — Indonesia's most active volcano and one of the most spectacular. The 2010 eruption's remnants (buried villages, ghostly pyroclastic flow tracks) are stark and remarkable. Afternoon transfer to Yogyakarta airport for the short flight to Bali. Maya meets you at Denpasar and transfers you to Ubud.

Ubud: Sacred Temples
Ubud
The transition from Java's archaeological Buddhism to Bali's living Hinduism is one of the great cultural contrasts of the journey. Maya's morning begins at Tirta Empul sacred spring, then continues to Pura Kehen — the state temple of the Bangli kingdom, carved into a cliff face and one of the most beautiful temples in Bali — before an afternoon entirely at leisure at the Mandapa.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Borobudur at sunrise is among the great experiences of a lifetime
“I teach Asian religious history and have wanted to see Borobudur since my twenties. Ravi's knowledge of the relief panel narratives surpassed anything I could have hoped for — he read the panels like a text, explaining the Buddhist cosmology with the ease of someone who has spent years studying them. The private sunrise was transcendent. Maya's Bali section was equally exceptional. This tour exceeded the highest expectations.”

The complete Indonesia experience — nothing left out
“We had been to Bali twice before but never to Java. The contrast between Borobudur's serene Buddhist landscape and Bali's living Hindu culture was extraordinary. Having two specialist guides — one for each island — made all the difference. The Plataran hotel at Borobudur is one of those places you'll remember for ever.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the 4am start for Borobudur compulsory?
The private sunrise access permit requires a 4am arrival at the monument. It is entirely possible to skip it and visit during normal hours — but the private sunrise experience is widely regarded as the highlight of the entire tour and is genuinely transformative. The monument in the pre-dawn darkness and mist, with no other visitors, is utterly different from the daytime experience. Most guests tell us the 4am start was the best decision of the whole journey. We strongly recommend it.
How does the handover between Java and Bali guides work?
Ravi accompanies you to Yogyakarta airport and introduces you to the logistics of the Bali flight. Maya meets you at Denpasar arrivals. There is no gap in care. Both guides communicate before the tour to ensure continuity of context — Maya knows everything that happened in Java and can continue the cultural narrative from Borobudur and Prambanan into Bali's very different Hindu tradition. Many guests find the conversation between the two traditions — one archaeological, one living — to be one of the most intellectually rewarding aspects of the tour.
