Java & Bali: Borobudur to Uluwatu

Fly into Yogyakarta (via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur). Ravi meets you at the airport and transfers you to the Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta, a beautifully restored Dutch colonial hotel in the heart of the city. Evening orientation walk through the Malioboro shopping street and a first taste of Javanese street food.

Morning at the Kraton — the 18th-century royal palace of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, still the active residence of the Sultan and his family, its inner courts and gamelan pavilions open to respectful visitors. Then Prambanan: the extraordinary 9th-century Hindu temple complex, 240 individual temples of which 40 have been restored, their soaring towers (prambans) rising above the Central Java plain like stone rockets. Ravi's architectural context makes the comparison with Borobudur — built simultaneously by rival dynasties — genuinely fascinating.

Transfer west to Borobudur and check in to the Plataran Heritage Borobudur — a boutique resort of Javanese-style garden villas whose boundary fence faces the monument directly. Afternoon walk through the monument and its grounds (open to the public after 6am) for orientation. Evening wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performance at the resort — the traditional Javanese art form that tells the Hindu epics through leather puppets and the voice of a master dalang (puppeteer).

A 4am start for Borobudur's private sunrise session — a special access permit that allows entry to the monument before the public opening at 6am. In the silence and the morning mist, with Merapi volcano pink above the horizon and the monument entirely to yourselves, Borobudur reveals itself as one of the most extraordinary things humans have ever built. Ravi's interpretation of the 2,700 relief panels — a complete narrative of the Buddhist cosmological journey carved in stone — transforms the experience into something deeply understood rather than merely seen. Return to the hotel for breakfast and a long, restful afternoon.

A morning jeep tour on the slopes of Mount Merapi — Indonesia's most active volcano and one of the most spectacular. The 2010 eruption's remnants (buried villages, ghostly pyroclastic flow tracks) are stark and remarkable. Afternoon transfer to Yogyakarta airport for the short flight to Bali. Maya meets you at Denpasar and transfers you to Ubud.

The transition from Java's archaeological Buddhism to Bali's living Hinduism is one of the great cultural contrasts of the journey. Maya's morning begins at Tirta Empul sacred spring, then continues to Pura Kehen — the state temple of the Bangli kingdom, carved into a cliff face and one of the most beautiful temples in Bali — before an afternoon entirely at leisure at the Mandapa.

The iconic Tegallalang terraces, the artisan villages of Mas and Celuk, and an afternoon cooking class in Maya's extended family compound — learning the spice paste and rice wine traditions of Balinese cuisine.

The great pilgrimage to Besakih — Bali's holiest site on the slopes of sacred Agung — followed by a traditional lunch at a mountain warung and an afternoon at the Mandapa's extraordinary riverside spa.

A final Ubud morning — perhaps the Campuhan Ridge Walk before checkout. Transfer south to Seminyak and The Layar for three nights of coastal Bali. Evening on the beach for the sunset.

A day that balances the cultural and the coastal. Morning at Tanah Lot sea temple at low tide, followed by a long Seminyak beach afternoon and a sunset dinner at one of the strip's best restaurants.

The Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple — the tour's great finale, the chanting and the cliff and the sunset all arriving simultaneously. Return to Seminyak for a farewell dinner.

Final morning at leisure before Maya transfers you to the airport.
