About this tour

Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary amount into a compact island — two UNESCO-listed ancient capitals, a sacred tooth relic venerated by Buddhists worldwide, the most dramatic rock fortress in Asia, a hill country fragrant with tea, and a coastline gilded by the Indian Ocean. This ten-day journey gathers the very best of it into a gentle, beautifully paced itinerary designed for travellers who want to experience everything deeply rather than rush. You begin in Colombo, where the colonial waterfront and spice-scented Pettah market set the scene for the adventures ahead. From there your private vehicle sweeps north into the Cultural Triangle — the heartland of Sri Lanka's ancient civilisations — where Dambulla's cave temples shimmer with 2,000-year-old frescoes and the 200-metre Lion Rock at Sigiriya rises from the jungle like something from a dream. Your specialist guide Isabella, who has lived in Kandy for a decade and speaks fluent Sinhala, brings these sites alive with the kind of personal context no guidebook can replicate. Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, is everything a hill-country city should be — lush, unhurried, centred on a sacred lake. The Temple of the Tooth Relic draws pilgrims from across Asia; here you witness the evening puja ceremony, candlelight and drumbeats filling the gilded hall. A visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where rescued elephants bathe in the river each morning, is one of those joyful encounters that guests talk about for years. The final leg brings you south to the golden sweep of Bentota beach — four days of colonial-verandah breakfasts, gentle ocean swims and unhurried afternoons with a good book. The coastal road back to Colombo passes through fishing villages where outrigger canoes bob in turquoise shallows, a fitting final image of an island that manages to be simultaneously ancient and utterly alive.

Isabella Chen has lived in Kandy for ten years and speaks fluent Sinhala and Tamil. Born in Bristol to Sri Lankan parents, she returned to the island in her thirties and now guides exclusively for Holidays to Asia. Her knowledge of Sri Lanka's temple protocols, village customs and hidden local restaurants is unmatched.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Entirely private — your vehicle, your guide, your pace throughout
  • Sigiriya can be ascended at a leisurely pace with rest platforms along the way; the view from the halfway point is spectacular even if you choose not to summit
  • All hotels chosen for ground-floor or lift access and spacious, air-conditioned rooms
  • Colombo and Kandy are compact enough to explore on foot without long distances
  • The coast section is deliberately unhurried — three nights of pure relaxation before the flight home
  • Isabella's knowledge of local pharmacies, hospitals and gentle alternatives to strenuous activities provides genuine peace of mind

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Colombo

Colombo

Meet Isabella at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer to the iconic Galle Face Hotel, a colonial landmark overlooking the Indian Ocean. After settling in, an early-evening stroll along Galle Face Green — where kite-flyers and coconut vendors have gathered at sunset for over a century — introduces you gently to Sri Lanka's easy pace. Dinner in the hotel's Plates restaurant, where modern Sri Lankan cuisine meets ocean breezes.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Galle Face Hotel, Colombo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Galle Face Green promenade is loveliest at dusk when the offshore breeze cools everything down. I always walk south past the old lighthouse — there's a wonderful view back to the hotel's colonial facade.
2

Colombo City Exploration

Colombo

A morning devoted to Colombo's most characterful neighbourhoods. Begin in the Dutch-built Fort district, where 17th-century warehouses now house boutiques and cafes, then plunge into Pettah — the oldest market district in Asia, a sensory riot of spice stalls, silk merchants and street food. The Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, its eclectic collection of Buddha images gathered from across the Buddhist world, makes for a fascinating mid-morning visit. Lunch at Gallery Café, set in Geoffrey Bawa's former architectural studio. Afternoon at leisure before a tuk-tuk tour of the Colombo 7 neighbourhood's grand colonial villas.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Galle Face Hotel, Colombo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Pettah spice market is best before 10am when it's less crowded. Ask for a handful of cinnamon quills to take home — real Ceylon cinnamon is softer and sweeter than anything you'll find in a UK supermarket.
3

Drive North to Dambulla — Cave Temples

Dambulla / Sigiriya

An easy three-hour drive north through coconut groves and paddy fields brings you to the Dambulla Cave Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex. Five caves shelter over 150 Buddha statues and 2,000 square metres of murals spanning two millennia. The ascent is gentle — 150 steps on a wide rock path — and the views over the jungle from the summit are magnificent. Continue to your Sigiriya hotel for a relaxed afternoon by the pool before a sunset cocktail on the terrace overlooking the rock.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Water Garden Sigiriya ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The inner caves at Dambulla are often missed by visitors who stop at the first two. Cave Five, the newest, has a beautiful reclining Buddha that very few people know about.
4

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya

An early 7am start for Sigiriya in the cool of the morning — the most important decision in making the ascent comfortable. King Kashyapa's 5th-century fortress rises 200 metres from the surrounding jungle, its summit reached via a series of wide staircases and a final iron spiral staircase through the lion's paws (the original lion-head entrance, now ruined). Midway up, the Sigiriya frescoes — beautiful apsara maidens painted in natural pigments 1,500 years ago — are extraordinarily vivid. The summit panorama, ancient gardens and pools spread below and jungle stretching to every horizon, is genuinely breathtaking. Afternoon at leisure; some guests take a bicycle around the water gardens at the base.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Water Garden Sigiriya ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Mirror Wall at the base of the frescoes is covered in ancient graffiti — visitors' reactions written in Sinhala script dating back to the 8th century. Some of them are remarkably witty love poems addressed to the painted ladies above.
Accessibility: Sigiriya's summit requires climbing approximately 1,200 steps. The frescoes halfway up can be reached with less effort. The water gardens at the base are flat and fully accessible. There is no shame in exploring the gardens and viewing the rock from below — it is magnificent from ground level too.
5

Polonnaruwa Ruins — Drive to Kandy

Polonnaruwa / Kandy

The ruined medieval capital of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's best-preserved ancient city, rewards a morning visit. The Gal Vihara — four massive Buddha figures carved directly from a single granite face — is one of the great works of Asian art. Explore by bicycle-taxi (trishaws fitted with wicker chairs) to cover the extensive site without too much walking in the heat. After lunch, the drive south to Kandy winds through the hill country, the road climbing through forests and tea estates as the temperature drops pleasantly. Check in to the Theva Residency, perched on a ridge with a vertiginous infinity pool view over the Knuckles mountain range.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Theva Residency, Kandy ★★★★★
6

Kandy: Temple of the Tooth & Botanical Gardens

Kandy

Kandy at its most sacred and most beautiful. Morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — 147 acres of orchids, spice gardens, giant bamboo and a magnificent avenue of royal palms that requires no effort to walk and considerable effort to leave. Lunch beside the sacred lake then an afternoon at the Sri Dalada Maligawa — the Temple of the Tooth Relic — where Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic, a tooth of the Buddha himself, is housed in a golden casket within a gilded shrine. The 6:30pm evening puja ceremony, with its rhythmic drumbeats, sweet incense and candlelit procession of robed monks, is one of the most moving spectacles in Asia. Isabella prepares you with the protocols so the experience feels natural rather than voyeuristic.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Theva Residency, Kandy ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Arrive at the Temple of the Tooth an hour before the puja to find a good position without rushing. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — and bring a small square of white cloth to sit on, which is the local custom.
7

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage — Drive to the Coast

Pinnawala / Bentota

The morning river-bathing at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where around 90 rescued elephants wade into the Maha Oya river for their twice-daily wash, is one of Sri Lanka's most joyful spectacles. The orphanage was founded in 1975 to care for injured and abandoned elephants; many have been there for decades and approach their familiar keepers with obvious affection. After the 10am bathing, continue south through the hill country and down to the coast, the warm coastal air rising to meet you as the road levels. Check in to your beachfront hotel at Bentota — beautiful gardens, a pool lapping the edge of the lagoon and the Indian Ocean directly ahead.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Centara Ceysands Resort, Bentota ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The elephant bathing happens at 10am and 2pm. The 10am session is slightly quieter. You can get very close — within a metre or two — along the riverside path. Bring a change of shirt; the elephants splash enthusiastically.
8

Free Day at Bentota

Bentota

A day entirely at your own pace on Sri Lanka's most beautiful stretch of west coast. Bentota's long golden beach is calm and safe for swimming; the lagoon behind the hotel offers kayaking and boat trips to spot monitor lizards and water birds. For those who'd like a cultural excursion, Isabella can arrange a visit to the Geoffrey Bawa estate at Brief Garden, the celebrated Sri Lankan architect's private jungle garden, just 20 minutes away. Alternatively, the turtle hatchery at nearby Kosgoda, where leatherback and green turtle eggs are collected for protected incubation, makes for a fascinating gentle morning.

Meals: BreakfastHotel: Centara Ceysands Resort, Bentota ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The south-facing terrace bar has the best sunset views on this stretch of coast. I recommend a cool arrack sour around 6pm — the local coconut spirit makes a superb sundowner.
9

Galle Fort & Coastal Drive

Galle / Bentota

Drive south along the coast road to Galle, the best-preserved colonial fort city in Asia. The Dutch-built ramparts enclose a labyrinth of 17th-century streets where boutique hotels and independent shops occupy centuries-old merchant houses. Walk the ramparts as the Indian Ocean crashes against the walls below, explore the Dutch Reformed Church and the National Maritime Museum, and browse the extraordinary independent bookshop Barefoot Galle. Lunch at the Fort's most atmospheric restaurant before returning up the coast to Bentota for a final evening of sundowners on the beach.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Centara Ceysands Resort, Bentota ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The rampart walk between the Clock Tower and the lighthouse takes about 30 minutes and gives you sweeping views of the Indian Ocean on one side and the rooftops of the fort city on the other. Go in the late afternoon when the light is golden.
10

Return to Colombo — Departure

Colombo

A final coastal drive north to Colombo, stopping en route at the fish market at Negombo where the overnight catch is landed and auctioned each morning — a vivid, colourful spectacle. Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, departing with a collection of images — rock fortresses, ancient frescoes, elephant splashing, gilded temples and a golden Indian Ocean shore — that will take weeks to fully absorb.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1 km

Fitness & mobility

Pacing & accessibility

A relaxed rhythm with time to absorb each place. Walking at Sigiriya is the one real physical challenge — entirely manageable with the right preparation.

Walking

Generally 2–4km per day on flat or gently undulating ground. Sigiriya is the exception — the ascent involves significant stairs but is entirely optional.

Transport

Private air-conditioned vehicle throughout. All inter-city drives broken with rest stops every 90 minutes.

Altitude

Mostly at or near sea level. Kandy sits at 500m — a pleasant temperature reduction but no altitude effects.

Heat / Climate

November to March is the dry season in the west and south. Sri Lanka is tropical; midday sun is strong year-round. All itinerary activities are scheduled for cooler morning hours.

Who will plan your holiday

Isabella Chen

Isabella was born in Bristol to Sri Lankan parents and spent childhood holidays exploring the island with her grandmother. After a career in heritage conservation in London, she returned to Sri Lanka in her mid-thirties, settling in Kandy where she now lives with her family. She speaks fluent Sinhala and conversational Tamil, which transforms visits to temples and village markets into genuine cultural exchanges that English-only guides simply cannot provide. Her particular passion is the temple architecture of the Cultural Triangle.

The holiday of a lifetime — and we've had quite a few

We've been on probably fifteen escorted tours over the years and this was simply the best. Isabella's knowledge is extraordinary — she doesn't just tell you what you're looking at, she tells you why it matters and what life was like for the people who built it. Sigiriya was terrifying and magnificent in equal measure. The Water Garden hotel was unlike anything we'd stayed in before. Sri Lanka has captured our hearts completely.

Perfect for solo travellers of a certain age

I was nervous about travelling solo to Sri Lanka at 68 but from the moment Isabella met me at the airport I felt completely looked after. The pace was exactly right — not too rushed, not too slow. The Temple of the Tooth evening ceremony moved me to tears in the most wonderful way. I've already booked the Kerala tour for next year and recommended this to five friends.

Elephants, temples and a beach — what more could you want?

We went for our 40th anniversary and Sri Lanka did not disappoint. The Pinnawala elephant bathing was the highlight for Christine; the Sigiriya frescoes were mine. The Bentota hotel was stunning — three nights of pure relaxation after the cultural intensity of the north was perfect pacing. Isabella was warm, funny and endlessly informative. We cannot recommend this tour highly enough.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sigiriya Rock ascent compulsory?

Absolutely not. The rock ascent involves approximately 1,200 steps and takes 45–90 minutes each way. It is a wonderful experience but entirely optional. The ancient water gardens at the base, the mirror wall and the halfway-point frescoes are all accessible without reaching the summit. Many guests of all ages find the gardens and the view of the rock from ground level deeply rewarding. Isabella will discuss options with you beforehand and stay at whatever point is right for you.

What is the best time of year to visit Sri Lanka?

For the west and south coast (Colombo, Bentota, Galle), the dry season runs from November to April — warm, sunny and ideal. The Cultural Triangle and Kandy are drier from May to September. This tour, designed for the west-coast circuit, is scheduled during the November–April dry season. December and January are the peak months and most popular, with consistently beautiful weather.

Do I need a visa?

UK citizens require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka, currently priced at USD 20. This is applied for online at eta.gov.lk before departure and is usually approved within 24 hours. We send full instructions with your booking confirmation. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Are there any health precautions required?

No vaccinations are legally required for entry from the UK, but your GP or a travel health clinic may recommend Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus as standard precautions for South Asia. Malaria risk in the main tourist areas is very low and most travellers do not take prophylaxis, but discuss this with your doctor. We recommend a comprehensive travel health consultation 6–8 weeks before departure. Tap water is not safe to drink — bottled water is provided in your vehicle and readily available everywhere.

How hot will it be?

Colombo and the coast average 28–32°C during the dry season (Nov–Apr), with high humidity. The Cultural Triangle is slightly drier and a degree or two cooler. Kandy at 500m is noticeably more comfortable — typically 24–27°C. All vehicles, hotels and most restaurants are air-conditioned. We schedule temple visits and outdoor activities for the cooler morning hours (before 11am) and the late afternoon (after 4pm), with a long, cool midday break at the hotel.

What should I wear at temples?

Modest dress is required at all Buddhist temples: shoulders and knees must be covered. Loose, lightweight cotton shirts and trousers are ideal. Most temples also require shoes to be removed before entering — bring slip-on footwear to make this straightforward. Isabella provides a lightweight cotton sarong that doubles as an emergency cover-up; we also recommend bringing your own. The Temple of the Tooth has a dress code enforced at the entrance; there is a facility to hire covering garments if needed.
