About this tour
Vietnam runs nearly 1,700 kilometres from the Chinese border to the Mekong Delta tip of Ca Mau, and the difference between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south is as dramatic as the difference between Edinburgh and Naples. This 14-day private journey covers the essential length of the country — not rushed, not superficial, but with genuine depth at each stop. Clara Nguyen, your guide for the entire journey, was born in Hoi An and trained as an art historian at the University of Hanoi before spending a decade working with cultural institutions across Vietnam and abroad. She returned to guiding because she wanted visitors to understand the country's history, not just photograph its beauty — and her interpretation of Hue's imperial palaces, Hoi An's merchant heritage, and Saigon's layered colonial and wartime past is consistently described by guests as transformative. The Halong Bay experience we've curated is a two-night stay aboard a premium private junk — just you and your party, no shared dining rooms — moving through the 1,969 limestone islands of the UNESCO World Heritage bay at the pace of the tide. It is one of Southeast Asia's definitive travel experiences, and this is the right way to do it. Hotel choices throughout reflect a philosophy of placing you in authentic, characterful properties: the Metropole in Hanoi (open since 1901, the haunt of Graham Greene and Charlie Chaplin), the La Résidence in Hue (a restored French Governor's residence), the Anantara Hoi An beside the Thu Bon River, and the Park Hyatt Saigon overlooking the city's Opera House.
“Designed by Clara Nguyen, our Vietnam specialist born in Hoi An with 12 years of guiding experience.”

1Arrival in Hanoi
Hanoi
Very lightSofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Arrival in Hanoi
Hanoi
Private transfer from Noi Bai Airport to the Sofitel Legend Metropole. Welcome dinner in the hotel's Le Beaulieu brasserie — a Hanoi institution since 1901. Clara introduces the two weeks ahead over a glass of Vietnamese wine.
2Hanoi Old Quarter & Hoan Kiem Lake
Hanoi
ModerateSofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Hanoi Old Quarter & Hoan Kiem Lake
Hanoi
Morning in the 36 Streets of the Old Quarter — each street historically named for the trade it housed (silk street, tin street, paper street). The labyrinthine lanes feel unchanged in substance despite the motorbikes and coffee shops. Visit the Temple of Literature — Vietnam's first university, founded in 1070 — and the tranquil Hoan Kiem Lake with the Ngoc Son Temple on its island. Afternoon free.
3Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & Hanoi Free Time
Hanoi
Gentle morningSofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & Hanoi Free Time
Hanoi
Morning: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex — the mausoleum itself (Uncle Ho's preserved body, one of Vietnam's most complex and contested sights), the Presidential Palace, his simple stilt house on the lake, and the One Pillar Pagoda. Clara's commentary on Ho Chi Minh's legacy and the politics of his preservation is one of the most interesting conversations guests have on any tour. Afternoon and evening entirely free.
4Transfer to Halong Bay
Hanoi → Halong Bay
ModeratePremium Private Junk, Halong Bay
Transfer to Halong Bay
Hanoi → Halong Bay
Morning drive east to Halong Bay (approximately 3.5 hours). Board your private premium junk at noon for two nights aboard. The afternoon is spent sailing deeper into the bay — visiting the Hang Sung Sot (Surprise Cave), kayaking through limestone arches, and watching the sun set behind the karst towers from the junk's sundeck.
5Halong Bay at Dawn
Halong Bay
Active morning, relaxed afternoonPremium Private Junk, Halong Bay
Halong Bay at Dawn
Halong Bay
Wake early for sunrise over the bay — the mist lifting through the karst islands in the morning light. Morning: tai chi on deck, then a cooking class with the junk's chef (learning Vietnamese spring rolls and a rice paper dish). Kayaking through a hidden lagoon only accessible by paddling through a low cave. Afternoon: swimming, sunbathing, and the exceptional five-course dinner.
6Halong Bay to Hue

Halong Bay to Hue
Halong Bay → Hue
Final morning on the bay, then drive back to Hanoi for the afternoon flight to Da Nang. Transfer to Hue — Vietnam's imperial capital, 100km north of Da Nang. Check in to La Résidence. This evening, a riverside walk along the Perfume River.
7Hue Imperial Citadel & Royal Tombs
Hue
ModerateLa Résidence Hotel & Spa, Hue
Hue Imperial Citadel & Royal Tombs
Hue
Hue was the imperial capital of the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 to 1945, and Clara's expertise in Vietnamese history makes this the intellectual high point of the journey. The Imperial Citadel (modelled on Beijing's Forbidden City, on a smaller and in some ways more intimate scale), followed by the Royal Tombs — vast ceremonial complexes in the forested hills south of the city. The tomb of Emperor Minh Mang is the most architecturally perfect.
8Hue Cuisine & Thien Mu Pagoda
Hue
GentleLa Résidence Hotel & Spa, Hue
Hue Cuisine & Thien Mu Pagoda
Hue
Hue is the culinary capital of Vietnam. A morning market visit to Dong Ba Market, then a cooking class with a family who has been preparing royal Hue cuisine for three generations — the elaborate small dishes originally prepared for the Nguyen emperors. Afternoon: Thien Mu Pagoda, the most important Buddhist site in central Vietnam, overlooking the Perfume River.
9Hue to Hoi An via Hai Van Pass
Hue → Hoi An
Travel day with scenic detourAnantara Hoi An Resort
Hue to Hoi An via Hai Van Pass
Hue → Hoi An
Drive south over the Hai Van Pass — the "Pass of Ocean Clouds" — with views that justify the 45-minute detour: the East Sea to one side, the green hills of central Vietnam to the other. Continue to Da Nang, then south to Hoi An. Check in to the Anantara Hoi An beside the Thu Bon River. This evening, a gentle walk through the lantern-lit Ancient Town.
10Hoi An Ancient Town
Hoi An
ModerateAnantara Hoi An Resort
Hoi An Ancient Town
Hoi An
Hoi An's Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary coherence — a merchant port preserved in amber, with Japanese covered bridges, Chinese assembly halls, French colonial facades and Vietnamese tube houses all coexisting on the same lane. Clara's knowledge of the town's trading history (Japanese, Chinese, Dutch, Portuguese merchants all maintained warehouses here in the 17th century) brings the architecture to life. Afternoon free to explore independently or visit the tailors for which Hoi An is globally famous.
11My Son Sanctuary & Hoi An Free Day
Hoi An / My Son
ModerateAnantara Hoi An Resort
My Son Sanctuary & Hoi An Free Day
Hoi An / My Son
Morning excursion to My Son — a hidden valley of Hindu temples built by the Cham civilisation between the 4th and 14th centuries, damaged by US bombing in 1969 but still profoundly atmospheric. Clara's explanation of Cham culture — a Hindu kingdom surrounded by Buddhist Vietnam — is extraordinary. Afternoon free in Hoi An.
12Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City

LightPark Hyatt Saigon
Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City
Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City
Morning free in Hoi An — perhaps a final market visit or a bicycle ride to the An Bang beach. Afternoon flight Da Nang–Ho Chi Minh City (included). Transfer to the Park Hyatt Saigon, a colonial-inspired five-star facing the city's Opera House. Welcome dinner at the hotel's Square One restaurant.
13Ho Chi Minh City — History & the Living City
Ho Chi Minh City
ModeratePark Hyatt Saigon
Ho Chi Minh City — History & the Living City
Ho Chi Minh City
The War Remnants Museum: an uncompromising, powerful account of the American War as Vietnam experienced it. Clara provides context and historical balance, making this one of the most educational mornings on the entire tour. Afternoon: the Reunification Palace (where North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates on 30 April 1975), the French colonial Notre-Dame Basilica and Central Post Office. Evening: the city's extraordinary restaurant and bar scene — Clara recommends a rooftop dinner at a local favourite rather than a hotel.

Final morning free — perhaps a last breakfast at the Park Hyatt terrace, or Clara's recommendation: a morning walk through the Ben Thanh Market neighbourhood for one final Vietnamese coffee and bánh mì. Private transfer to Tan Son Nhat Airport. Clara sees you off.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Clara made it extraordinary
“We've been to Southeast Asia many times but Vietnam with Clara was on a different level. Her knowledge of the imperial history in Hue was simply remarkable — we felt like we were learning from a professor who also happened to be funny and kind. The private junk in Halong Bay was magnificent. Two nights felt exactly right.”

Vietnam from north to south, done perfectly
“I'd always wanted to see the whole of Vietnam in one trip and this delivered exactly that. The variety — from the ancient Old Quarter of Hanoi to the limestone islands of Halong Bay to the French colonial elegance of Hue to the lantern-lit lanes of Hoi An — is extraordinary. The Metropole was the loveliest hotel of the trip.”
Susan Marchetti

The War Museum was the most powerful hour of the trip
“We were slightly apprehensive about the War Remnants Museum but Clara's framing was perfect — she presented both sides with fairness and depth, without reducing it to simple narrative. It was the most intellectually engaged we've been on any holiday. The rest of the trip was spectacular. Hoi An is unforgettable.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Vietnam?
British passport holders require an e-visa for Vietnam. This is obtained online before travel at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, costs approximately US$25, and is valid for 90 days single or multiple entry. We provide full instructions with your booking confirmation. Processing takes 3 business days.
What is the best time of year to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam's climate varies by region. Hanoi and the north are best November–April (cool and dry). Hue and Hoi An have a wet season in October–November but are best December–August. Ho Chi Minh City is hot year-round but driest November–April. This tour runs well from November to April. We note weather caveats on all departures.
Is the Halong Bay junk really private?
Yes — the junk is chartered exclusively for your group. There are no other passengers, no shared dining room, no schedules set by strangers. The crew cook for your group, kayak with your group and navigate around the areas of the bay you prefer.
How safe is Vietnam for travellers?
Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia's safest destinations. Petty theft in busy areas (handbag snatching on motorbikes in Saigon) is the main concern — Clara briefs guests on this before arrival. Political stability is high. Healthcare facilities in major cities are adequate for minor issues; medical evacuation insurance is recommended.
How much should I budget for tips and extras?
Tips: £15–20 per day for Clara is appropriate (she is with you for 14 days and this is the most appropriate single expenditure). Meals not included: budget £25–40 per day for lunches and dinners — Vietnam is excellent value. Tailoring in Hoi An: budget £50–150 for made-to-measure garments if you wish.
Can the War Remnants Museum be skipped?
Yes — it can be replaced with a Saigon street food walking tour or a visit to Cho Lon (Saigon's Chinatown) if guests prefer. However, Clara strongly recommends the museum for anyone interested in history, and our guests who have visited rate it among the most significant experiences of the whole tour.
