About this tour

Thailand has a way of making everything feel effortless. The temples shimmer, the food arrives fragrant and beautiful, the people smile with genuine warmth — and on this 12-day private journey, we've arranged it so that the beauty lands gently, without the rush that so often steals the pleasure from travel. We begin in Bangkok, where the Mandarin Oriental — the grande dame of Asian hotels since 1876 — sets the tone immediately. Three nights here allow you to absorb the city at your own pace: the Grand Palace in the morning cool, the serene courtyards of Wat Pho, a long-tail boat down the khlong canals, and an evening table at one of the rooftop restaurants that have made Bangkok one of the world's great dining destinations. From Bangkok we fly north to Chiang Mai, Thailand's cultural capital, where the air is clearer, the pace slower, and the temples older. Four nights at the Rachamankha — a boutique masterpiece built around Lanna-style courtyard architecture — gives you a base that feels like a private sanctuary. Sophie Beaumont, your guide for these seven northern nights, has spent nine years mapping every worthwhile experience the city offers, from the dawn alms-giving ceremony at Doi Suthep to the family-run noodle shop down the lane that no itinerary has ever published. We end at Trisara in Phuket, a private-pool-villa resort on a secluded bay that represents one of Southeast Asia's most complete beach experiences. Four nights here — with nothing required of you except the decision of which lounger to choose — complete a journey that balances discovery with deep rest in exactly the right measure.

Designed by Sophie Beaumont, our Thailand specialist with nine years based in Chiang Mai.

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Bangkok

Bangkok

Private airport transfer to the Mandarin Oriental. The rest of the day is entirely yours — perhaps a walk along the riverside promenade, or simply settling into your room and ordering afternoon tea in the Authors' Lounge, where Somerset Maugham and Noël Coward once drank gin slings.

Meals: Dinner (welcome dinner at Mandarin Oriental's China House)Walking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Mandarin Oriental Bangkok ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Authors' Lounge serves the best afternoon tea in Bangkok. Book a table for around 15:00 on your arrival day — it's a perfect way to ease in.
2

Grand Palace & the Sacred Temples of Bangkok

Bangkok

Your private guide meets you at 09:00 for Bangkok's most iconic morning. The Grand Palace complex — still the spiritual heart of the kingdom — houses Wat Phra Kaew, home of the sacred Emerald Buddha. Afterwards, a five-minute walk brings you to Wat Pho, with its 46-metre reclining Buddha and one of Bangkok's finest traditional massage schools. Afternoon at leisure.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Mandarin Oriental Bangkok ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Go at 09:00 sharp when the palace opens — by 10:30 the tour groups arrive in force. Wear comfortable shoes with covered shoulders and knees.
Accessibility: The Grand Palace has some uneven paving. A folding walking stick is useful.
3

Canals, Markets and Wat Arun

Bangkok

A morning on the water: your guide arranges a private long-tail boat through the Thonburi canals, past wooden stilt houses, orchid farms and neighbourhood temples that feel entirely removed from the high-rise city. Cross the river to Wat Arun — the Temple of Dawn — whose porcelain-encrusted spires are even more spectacular up close than in photographs. Afternoon free for shopping at the River City antiques complex or simply relaxing by the riverside.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Mandarin Oriental Bangkok ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Sophie recommends the Blue Elephant restaurant for lunch — set in a 100-year-old mansion, with a Thai cooking school attached if you're interested.
4

Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Bangkok → Chiang Mai

Morning free in Bangkok before a midday transfer to Suvarnabhumi Airport for your included one-hour flight to Chiang Mai. Your Chiang Mai guide meets you on arrival and transfers you to the Rachamankha. This evening, a gentle orientation stroll through the old city's moated walls, ending with dinner at your guide's favourite local restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Rachamankha Chiang Mai ★★★★★
5

Chiang Mai's Ancient Temples & Night Bazaar

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai has over 300 temples within its walls and surrounding valleys. Today we visit the finest: Wat Chedi Luang, whose ruined 14th-century chedi towers over the old city; Wat Phra Singh, with its exquisite Lanna-style bot; and the atmospheric monk's quarters of Wat Suan Dok, where you're invited to join a Monk Chat — a gentle conversation about Buddhist life that many guests find unexpectedly moving. This evening, explore the Night Bazaar at your own pace.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 5 kmHotel: Rachamankha Chiang Mai ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Monk Chat at Wat Suan Dok happens every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening at 17:30. If your timing allows, Sophie will rearrange the day to include it — the conversations are invariably among guests' favourite memories.
6

Doi Suthep Temple & Hill Tribe Village

Chiang Mai

Drive up into the misty hills above the city to Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai's most sacred temple, legend has it founded when a white elephant carrying a Buddha relic chose this mountain and trumpeted three times before expiring. The views over the valley from the 1,676-metre summit are extraordinary. Continue deeper into the hills to visit a Hmong hill tribe village — a community that has maintained its distinct culture, textiles and crafts for generations.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (hill tribe village lunch)Walking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Rachamankha Chiang Mai ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Hmong women's embroidery textiles sold at the village market are some of the most beautiful in Thailand. Sophie can advise which pieces represent genuine craft.
Accessibility: The 300-step Naga staircase to the temple can be avoided by taking the funicular. Please tell us in advance.
7

Elephant Sanctuary Visit

Chiang Mai region

A full day at one of Chiang Mai's most respected ethical elephant sanctuaries, home to rescued elephants formerly used in logging or tourism. You'll spend the morning walking with the elephants through forest, feeding them, bathing them in the river, and learning their individual histories from the mahouts who care for them. This is not a riding sanctuary — the emphasis is entirely on observation, care and conservation.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (picnic at the sanctuary)Walking: approx. 5 kmHotel: Rachamankha Chiang Mai ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Wear old clothes you don't mind getting muddy. The elephant bathing experience is one of Thailand's most joyful moments — fully embrace it.
8

Thai Cooking Class & Warorot Market

Chiang Mai

Morning at the Warorot Market — Chiang Mai's oldest and most authentic covered market, where northern Thailand's culinary landscape comes alive in stalls of dried chillies, lemongrass, galangal, sticky rice and Chiang Mai sausages. You'll choose your ingredients here before transferring to a cookery school set in a traditional teak house garden for a half-day Thai cooking class. Afternoon and evening free.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (cooking class meal)Walking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Rachamankha Chiang Mai ★★★★★
9

Chiang Mai to Phuket

Phang Nga Bay by Private Longtail

Your guide accompanies you through the sea caves and mangrove lagoons of Ao Phang Nga National Park, stopping at the extraordinary "James Bond Island" (Ko Tapu) and the sea gypsy village on Ko Panyi. A full morning on the water, returning to Trisara in time for lunch.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Trisara Phuket ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Leave at 07:30 to reach Ko Panyi before the day-trip crowds from Krabi and Phuket. By the time they arrive, you'll be heading back.

Trisara Beach Day

Phuket

A completely free day at Trisara. This may be the best possible use of it: the Andaman Sea on your doorstep, your private villa pool, the spa, the snorkelling off the resort's own beach. Or perhaps a private boat trip to nearby uninhabited islands. There are no obligations today.

Guest reviews

The trip of a lifetime — and we've done many

We've been to Thailand three times before but never like this. Sophie had access to things we'd never have found alone — the Monk Chat was deeply moving, the elephant sanctuary was genuinely ethical and beautiful, and Trisara at the end was the most relaxing four days we can remember. The Mandarin Oriental set the tone perfectly. Everything was seamless.

Sophie makes the difference

I'm a solo traveller in my mid-sixties and I was a little nervous about going to Thailand alone. Sophie made me feel completely safe and welcomed from the first moment. She speaks Thai fluently and opened doors — both literal and metaphorical — that no guidebook could. The cooking class in Chiang Mai was particularly wonderful. I've already booked Vietnam.

Perfectly paced and utterly beautiful

My husband has a bad knee and we were worried about too much walking, but there was never a day that felt too demanding. The mix of temples, water, food and beach was exactly right. Rachamankha is the loveliest hotel we've ever stayed in — like someone's private home, but with a very good kitchen.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year to visit Thailand?

November to February is Thailand's cool season — the most comfortable for sightseeing, with lower humidity and temperatures of 25–30°C. March to May is hotter. June to October is monsoon season in the south (Phuket), though Chiang Mai in the north has a shorter, milder rainy season. We offer departures year-round but recommend November–February for this itinerary.

Do I need a visa for Thailand?

British passport holders receive a 30-day visa exemption on arrival. No pre-arranged visa is required. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.

Is Thailand safe for solo women travellers?

Thailand is generally very safe for solo female travellers, and having a private guide throughout this tour adds an extra layer of security and confidence. Sophie herself is a solo British woman who has lived in Chiang Mai for nine years. Our female solo travellers consistently rate Thailand as one of their most enjoyable destinations.

How much spending money should I budget?

Thailand is excellent value. Excluding lunches and dinners not included in the tour, budget approximately £60–80 per day for meals, drinks, shopping and incidentals. The Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai is wonderful for gifts, silks and handicrafts at very reasonable prices.

What should I wear visiting temples?

Shoulders and knees must be covered at all temples. Loose linen trousers and a light long-sleeved shirt are comfortable and respectful. Slip-on shoes are helpful as shoes must be removed before entering temple buildings. Sophie carries a couple of sarongs for guests who forget.

Can the elephant sanctuary day be adapted for limited mobility?

Yes. The sanctuary visit involves gentle walking on uneven forest paths, but most of the experience is observational — watching, feeding and interacting with the elephants near their enclosure area. For guests with significant mobility limitations, we can arrange a seated experience near the feeding station and river viewing area. Please tell us at the time of booking.
