Bali: Temples, Rice & Ubud Culture
Seven days in Bali's cultural heartland — temples, terraces and the island's extraordinary soul

About this tour
Seven days in Ubud is just enough time to begin to understand Bali properly. The island's cultural capital — cool, green and permeated by the rhythms of ceremony and devotion — rewards slow attention in a way that a few rushed days never reveal. This small-group tour, led by Tom Whitfield (who has lived in Ubud for eight years and considers it permanently home), keeps you in and around Ubud for five nights, spending each morning with a specific cultural focus before the afternoons unfold at leisure. The sacred spring at Tirta Empul, the UNESCO-listed subak rice terraces at Tegallalang and Jatiluwih, the extraordinary carved stone cave sanctuary at Goa Gajah, the traditional weaving village of Tenganan — and every day, the gentle hum of Ubud itself: incense drifting from house shrines, gamelan practice from somewhere always nearby, the morning flower offerings placed on every threshold. Two final nights in Seminyak deliver the coast and the celebrated Bali sunset before departure.
“Tom Whitfield arrived in Ubud for six months in 2017 and simply stayed. The former Bristol geography teacher built a life in the Ubud valley, learned Indonesian and Balinese, and now guides exclusively for Holidays to Asia. His knowledge of Balinese Hindu cosmology and ceremony has been praised by cultural academics who have joined his tours.”

Arrival — Ubud
Ubud
The group meets at Ngurah Rai Airport and transfers to Ubud, stopping at the Tanah Lot sea temple for the late-afternoon golden-hour visit. Check in to the Four Seasons Resort at Sayan — set in a spectacular river valley with villa terraces stepping down to the Ayung River far below. Tom's welcome dinner on the resort's lily-pond terrace introduces the group and previews the week ahead.

Tirta Empul & Ubud Town
Ubud
Morning at the sacred spring temple of Tirta Empul — Tom's briefing on the purification ritual transforms what could be a passive visit into a genuine moment of cultural understanding. Afternoon free in Ubud town: the morning market, the museum strip along Jalan Raya Ubud, the wood-carving galleries. Evening dinner at Locavore — one of the best restaurants in Asia, its menu built entirely from Balinese producers and foragers.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces & Campuhan Ridge Walk
Ubud
Early morning at Tegallalang — the subak-irrigated amphitheatre of rice terraces north of Ubud, most beautiful in the early light. Then the Campuhan Ridge Walk — a 3km gentle path along a jungle ridge with rice fields on both sides, one of the most pleasant walks in Bali and entirely within walking distance of the Four Seasons. Afternoon for the hotel spa — Balinese massage, volcanic stone treatment or flower bath, all at the riverside spa pavilion.
4Traditional Village & Artisans

Traditional Village & Artisans
Ubud
Tenganan — one of Bali's original Aga villages (pre-Hindu Bali), a walled community that has resisted external influence for centuries and is the only place in the world where the extraordinary double-ikat weaving technique geringsing is practised. The village's traditional architecture and its villagers' pride in their ancient traditions make for one of the most authentic cultural encounters in Bali. Afternoon: a woodcarving class in Mas village, learning the basic chisel techniques from a master carver.
5Cooking Class & Evening Kecak
Ubud
Easy morning; evening excursionFour Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan
Cooking Class & Evening Kecak
Ubud
A morning Balinese cooking class — market visit, spice paste preparation and a multi-dish lunch of everything the group has cooked. Evening transfer to Uluwatu for the Kecak fire dance at sunset — Tom considers this essential even for a primarily Ubud-focused tour. The drive back to Ubud in the dark, full of Balinese food and the memory of 100 chanting men at the cliff edge, is one of those travel evenings that stays with you.

Drive to Seminyak
Seminyak
A final Ubud morning — perhaps a sunrise walk to the rice fields behind the hotel, or a last spa treatment, or simply the quiet pleasure of breakfast on a private terrace above the river valley. Transfer south to Seminyak and the COMO Uma Seminyak for two nights of coastal Bali.

Who will plan your holiday
Tom Whitfield
Tom arrived in Ubud in 2017 for a six-month break from teaching and found a life he had been looking for without knowing it. Eight years later, he is as embedded in the Ubud community as any foreigner can be — he knows the healers, the priests, the wood carvers and the best warung cooks, and he brings all of this knowledge to every group he leads. His patient, enquiring style suits guests who want to understand Bali rather than just photograph it.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Seven days that changed how we travel
“We've done package holidays in Bali before and felt we'd missed something. This tour was the something. Tom's knowledge of Balinese Hinduism is extraordinary — he explained the temple rituals in a way that made them deeply moving rather than just exotic. The Four Seasons at Sayan is one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in. The cooking class remains the highlight of our culinary year.”

Perfect solo tour — wonderful group
“Solo at 69 and every anxiety dissolved within 24 hours. The group was lovely — all over 60, all curious and kind. Tom has the gift of making twelve strangers into friends within a day. Ubud itself is magical — I could have stayed for a month. The Kecak at Uluwatu was the most dramatic thing I've ever witnessed. Already looking at the 10-day Classic for next year.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is seven days enough for Bali?
It depends entirely on what you want from the island. Seven days focused on Ubud and the cultural heartland is genuinely enough to understand the island's soul — more than enough to come home feeling you've experienced something real. Those who want to add the clifftop drama of Uluwatu, the north coast and the east Bali temples should consider our 10-day or 14-day tours. Many guests do the 7-day tour first, fall in love with Bali, and return for a longer tour the following year.
What makes Ubud different from the beach resorts?
Seminyak, Kuta and Nusa Dua offer beach, sun and resort hotels — all wonderful, but not distinctly Balinese. Ubud is different: a cultural city set in the cool upland valley where Balinese art, music, dance and religious practice are lived rather than performed for tourists. The morning flower offerings, the gamelan practice drifting from temple courtyards, the wood-carving workshops and the rice farmers tending their terraces — all of this happens in Ubud because this is simply how life is here, not because tourists are watching.
How big is the group really?
We cap strictly at 12. In practice, most departures run with 8–10. Tom's management of the group dynamic is excellent — he is experienced at ensuring solo travellers feel included and couples have their own space. The maximum of 12 means restaurant bookings are straightforward, the hotel van is comfortable, and the temple visits are intimate. We have never had a group complaint about group dynamics on this tour.
