Kuala Lumpur Discovery: Petronas, Batu Caves & Melaka
Malaysia's magnificent capital — twin towers, ancient caves and a UNESCO colonial gem

About this tour
Kuala Lumpur is one of those cities that reveals itself in layers. The first layer is obvious and extraordinary: the Petronas Twin Towers — the world's tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004 and still, from any angle in the city, among the most dramatic pieces of architecture in Asia. The second layer is the city's astonishing multicultural character: within a square mile of the Petronas Towers you will find the Sri Mahamariamman Hindu temple (1873), the Jamek Mosque (1909), the Sri Kandaswamy Kovil, and the Chan See Shu Yuen Chinese Temple — four traditions, four centuries, one neighbourhood. This seven-night private journey, guided by James Whitfield, unpeels KL's layers in a sequence that builds from the iconic to the intimate. The Petronas Towers Skybridge in the morning cool; the remarkable Islamic Arts Museum (the finest in Southeast Asia); the temples and food stalls of Chinatown and Brickfields; and — as the centrepiece of the week — a full day in Melaka, the most perfectly preserved colonial town in Malaysia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Portuguese, Dutch and British history layered over centuries of Malay and Chinese culture. You stay throughout at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, positioned at the literal base of the Petronas Towers, where the views from the pool terrace are, in the honest opinion of guests who have stayed at many of Asia's finest hotels, among the most dramatic in the region.
“Kuala Lumpur rewards the traveller who looks past the towers — the city's cultural depth is extraordinary, and it starts in the food. — James Whitfield, Malaysia & Singapore Specialist”

Petronas Towers & Merdeka Square
Kuala Lumpur
An early morning visit to the Petronas Towers Skybridge — connecting the twin towers at floors 41 and 42, 170 metres above ground, with panoramic views over the KLCC Park and city — before the heat builds. Then a private drive to Merdeka Square, where Malaysia declared independence from Britain on 31 August 1957, surrounded by some of KL's finest colonial architecture: the Tudor Revival Royal Selangor Club, the Jamek Mosque and the extraordinary Mughal-Gothic Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The National Textile Museum occupies the square's eastern corner with a superb collection of Malaysian batik and ikat weaving.

Batu Caves & Temple Life
Kuala Lumpur
Batu Caves, 13km north of the city centre, is Malaysia's most famous Hindu shrine — a series of limestone caverns at the heart of a 400-million-year-old massif, guarded at the base by a 43-metre gilded statue of Lord Murugan. The Cathedral Cave at the top of 272 steps houses the Sri Subramaniam Temple and a natural light shaft through the cave ceiling that is magnificent at midday. James explains the significance of the Thaipusam festival, which draws over a million pilgrims annually. Afternoon at leisure.
4Full Day in Melaka
Melaka
ModerateMandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur
Full Day in Melaka
Melaka
A full day excursion to Melaka (Malacca) — the UNESCO World Heritage city 90 minutes south of KL by private car. Melaka's Jonker Street is the most evocative colonial streetscape in Malaysia: Dutch-era Stadthuys (1650), the ruins of the Portuguese A Famosa fort (1511), Christ Church (1753), the extraordinary Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (the oldest functioning Chinese temple in Malaysia, 1646) and the extraordinary cultural patchwork of a city that has been ruled by the Sultanate of Melaka, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British in succession. James guides a walking tour of the UNESCO Heritage Zone followed by a Nyonya lunch at a restaurant he considers the finest in town.

Islamic Arts Museum & Chinatown
Kuala Lumpur
The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia — the largest and most important museum of Islamic art in Southeast Asia, with 12 galleries covering 7,000 years of Islamic civilisation from Persia, India, China and the Malay world — is James's personal favourite museum in KL. Two hours here rewards any level of interest. Then to Chinatown: Petaling Street market, the Chan See Shu Yuen Temple, and a dim sum lunch at a kopitiam (traditional coffee shop) that has been in continuous operation since 1939.

Morning in Brickfields — KL's Little India — a genuine neighbourhood of jasmine-flower sellers, banana-leaf rice restaurants, saree emporiums and the extraordinary Sri Kandaswamy Kovil temple, whose gopuram tower blazes with colour. Then to the KL Forest Eco Park — 9.37 hectares of primary rainforest in the city centre, a living fragment of the jungle that once covered the entire peninsula, with a canopy walkway at 20 metres and giant ficus trees that predate the city. KL exceeded everything we expected
“We had thought of Kuala Lumpur as a transit city — somewhere to change planes on the way to Bali. James converted us completely. The Islamic Arts Museum is extraordinary. Melaka blew us away. The Mandarin Oriental is magnificent. We are already planning to return for Penang.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to visit Malaysia?
British passport holders do not require a visa for Malaysia for stays of up to 90 days. Entry is granted on arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
Is Batu Caves accessible for travellers with limited mobility?
The main Cathedral Cave at Batu Caves requires 272 concrete steps with handrails. There is no lift or alternative route to the main temple. Travellers who prefer not to climb can visit the Dark Cave (a separate cave with a flat boardwalk, excellent for bats and cave ecosystems) and the three smaller temples at the cave base, which are all step-free. James can adjust the programme accordingly.
What is the currency in Malaysia and how much should I budget?
The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). £1 ≈ 5.90 MYR (check current rates). Malaysia is excellent value: a hawker meal at a mamak restaurant is RM 10–20; a good restaurant meal RM 80–150. The Mandarin Oriental's restaurants are priced comparably to a good London restaurant. Budget approximately RM 150–250 per day for meals, shopping and incidentals not included in the tour.
Can this be combined with Penang or Langkawi?
Yes — Kuala Lumpur combines very well with both. Our 10-night Malaysia & Penang package adds Georgetown, Penang Hill and Nyonya food culture. Our 15-night Malaysia Complete tour adds Penang, Cameron Highlands and Langkawi. Alternatively, we can tailor a bespoke extension to any combination of Malaysian destinations.
