About this tour

South Korea is one of the great undiscovered pleasures of Asia for the seasoned traveller — a country where 600-year-old palaces sit beneath glittering towers, where ancient Buddhist temples cling to forested hillsides, and where a cuisine of extraordinary subtlety is taken as seriously as anything in Tokyo or Paris. This fourteen-night journey is our flagship Korean itinerary, privately escorted from the moment you land to the moment you depart, and designed to reveal the whole of the country in five-star comfort and at a refined, unhurried pace. You begin in Seoul, a capital of remarkable contrasts, where three full days allow time to explore the grand Joseon-dynasty palaces, the hushed lanes of Bukchon Hanok Village, and the temple of Jogyesa, before a moving private excursion to the Demilitarised Zone — the world's most heavily fortified border, and one of the most thought-provoking half-days available anywhere. From the capital your journey turns south and slows: a night in the Confucian heartland of Andong, where the riverside folk village of Hahoe has changed little in five centuries, then on to Gyeongju, the ancient Silla capital, where royal burial mounds rise from the city like green hills and the temple of Bulguksa and the Seokguram Grotto represent the very summit of Korean Buddhist art. Busan, Korea's great port city, brings a change of mood — seafood markets and hillside temples, a beach promenade and a buzzing energy — before a final, quieter pleasure in Jeonju, whose hanok village of tiled wooden houses is the spiritual home of Korean food. Here you dine on bibimbap in the city that perfected it, and wander streets fragrant with fermenting soy and toasting sesame. The journey ends where Korea is at its most beautiful: Jeju Island, a volcanic paradise in the southern sea. Four full nights allow time to climb (or simply admire) the dramatic Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone, to walk through the otherworldly Manjanggul lava tube, to stroll the foothills of Hallasan, Korea's highest mountain, and to meet the haenyeo — the remarkable women free-divers who have harvested the sea by hand for generations. It is a fitting, restful finale to a journey that shows you a country few of your friends will have seen, and which you will struggle ever to forget.

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Seoul

Seoul

Soo-Yeon meets you on arrival at Incheon International Airport and escorts you by private car into the heart of Seoul, to the magnificent Signiel Seoul — the city's finest hotel, occupying the upper floors of the Lotte World Tower with sweeping views across the capital. After settling in and resting, an unhurried early-evening orientation stroll introduces you gently to the rhythm of the city before dinner at the hotel.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Signiel Seoul ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Korea is around eight or nine hours ahead of the UK, so I always recommend a light dinner and an early night on arrival. The Signiel's 81st-floor lounge is the perfect place for a quiet glass of something before bed, with the whole of Seoul glittering below.
2

Seoul: Palaces & Bukchon

Seoul

A full day among the treasures of old Seoul. We begin at Gyeongbokgung, the grandest of the five Joseon-dynasty palaces, in time for the colourful changing of the royal guard ceremony, then wander the elegant lanes of Bukchon Hanok Village, where hundreds of traditional tiled houses survive between the palaces. The afternoon brings the serene Buddhist temple of Jogyesa and the boutiques and tea houses of Insadong, with frequent pauses for refreshment.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4.5 kmHotel: Signiel Seoul ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Renting a colourful hanbok — traditional Korean dress — grants free palace entry and makes for wonderful photographs. Many of my guests in their sixties and seventies do it and adore the experience; there is no obligation, but it is great fun.
Accessibility: The palace grounds are largely flat with gravel paths; a wheelchair can be accommodated with notice. Bukchon's lanes are gently sloping in places — Soo-Yeon chooses the flatter routes and we travel between districts by private car rather than on foot.
3

The Demilitarised Zone

Seoul / DMZ

A morning private excursion to the Demilitarised Zone, the tense and fascinating border that has divided the Korean peninsula since 1953. We visit the observatory overlooking North Korea, one of the infiltration tunnels, and — security conditions permitting — the Joint Security Area at Panmunjom, where the two Koreas stand face to face. It is a sobering, deeply memorable half-day. The afternoon is free to rest or explore Seoul at leisure.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Signiel Seoul ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Access to the JSA at Panmunjom can change at short notice depending on the security situation, and a passport is required for the DMZ. I confirm the exact itinerary a few days ahead and always have a rewarding alternative ready should the border be closed.
Accessibility: The infiltration tunnel involves a steep descent and ascent and is entirely optional — those who prefer can wait comfortably above ground while still enjoying the observatory and museum, which are step-free.
4

Seoul to Andong — Hahoe Folk Village

Andong

We leave the capital this morning and travel south by high-speed rail and private car to Andong, the heartland of Korean Confucian tradition. The riverside Hahoe Folk Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living village of thatched and tiled houses encircled by a loop of the Nakdong River — little changed in five hundred years. Tonight you stay in genuine style at Rakkojae Andong, an exquisitely restored hanok where you sleep in a heated traditional room.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Rakkojae Andong ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Andong is famous for its mask dance and its jjimdak — a wonderful braised chicken dish. I always arrange for us to dine on the local speciality; it is one of the warmest, most homely meals of the whole tour.
Accessibility: Hahoe's lanes are flat but unpaved earth, which can be uneven. Traditional hanok rooms involve sleeping on a comfortable floor mattress over warm under-floor heating; if you would prefer a conventional bed, do tell us and we will arrange a room to suit.
5

Andong to Gyeongju

Gyeongju

A short, scenic transfer brings us to Gyeongju, often called "the museum without walls" — the capital of the Silla kingdom for a thousand years. This afternoon we explore the Daereungwon tumuli park, where grass-covered royal burial mounds rise like green hills from the centre of the city, and the elegant Cheomseongdae, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia. We check in to the comfortable Hilton Gyeongju, beautifully set beside Bomun Lake.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Hilton Gyeongju ★★★★★
Accessibility: The tumuli park is flat and largely paved, with smooth paths between the mounds — one of the most accessible sites on the tour. One burial mound can be entered to view the excavation, via a short ramp.
6

Gyeongju: Bulguksa & Seokguram

Gyeongju

A day among the masterpieces of Korean Buddhist art. The temple of Bulguksa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating from the 8th century, is the most beautiful in all Korea, its stone terraces and pagodas set against wooded hills. Higher up the mountain, the Seokguram Grotto shelters a serene granite Buddha widely regarded as the supreme achievement of Silla sculpture. We also visit the superb Gyeongju National Museum, home of the great Silla golden crowns.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Hilton Gyeongju ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The morning light at Bulguksa is exquisite and the coach parties tend to arrive later, so we set out early to have the loveliest courtyards almost to ourselves. The Buddha at Seokguram sits behind glass facing east — it was positioned to catch the rising sun over the sea.
Accessibility: Bulguksa has several flights of stone steps between its terraces, though much of the temple can be enjoyed from the lower, level courtyards. At Seokguram a paved woodland path leads from the car park to the grotto; it is gently uphill but a slow, steady pace makes it very manageable, and benches line the route for resting.
7

Gyeongju to Busan

Busan

This morning we travel to Busan, Korea's vibrant second city and its greatest port. On arrival we visit the extraordinary Haedong Yonggungsa, a rare Buddhist temple set dramatically on the rocks above the crashing sea, then settle into the magnificent Park Hyatt Busan on the Haeundae waterfront. The evening is yours to enjoy the marina and the lights of the bay.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Park Hyatt Busan ★★★★★
Accessibility: Haedong Yonggungsa is reached by a flight of 108 steps down to the seafront temple, and back up again. The views from the top are beautiful in themselves, and Soo-Yeon is happy to descend with those who wish while others enjoy the clifftop terrace and pavilion.
8

Busan: Markets, Hills & Sea

Busan

A full day exploring the many faces of Busan. We visit the colourful, cascading Gamcheon Culture Village on its hillside, the bustling Jagalchi fish market — Korea's largest — and the seaside temple and headland walks of Haeundae and Dongbaek. There is time, too, simply to enjoy the beach promenade at an easy pace, with a fine seafood lunch overlooking the water.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4.5 kmHotel: Park Hyatt Busan ★★★★★
Specialist tip: At Jagalchi market you choose your seafood downstairs and it is cooked to order upstairs — a wonderful Busan tradition. For those who prefer, the Park Hyatt's own restaurants are superb, and I am always happy to tailor the day to your appetite.
Accessibility: Gamcheon village is built on a steep hillside with many steps; we explore the gentler upper section by car and on the level, and there is no need to tackle the steepest lanes. The Haeundae promenade and Dongbaek coastal walk are flat and beautifully paved.
9

Busan to Jeonju — Hanok Village

Jeonju

We travel west across the country to Jeonju, the gastronomic capital of Korea and home to its most celebrated hanok village — over 700 traditional tiled houses gathered in the heart of the city. This afternoon we wander its lanes, visit the Gyeonggijeon shrine and a traditional hanji paper workshop, and breathe in the scents of a city where food is a serious art. Tonight you stay at the comfortable Lahan Hotel Jeonju, beside the village itself.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Lahan Hotel Jeonju ★★★★
Specialist tip: Jeonju is the birthplace of bibimbap, Korea's famous mixed rice bowl, and tonight is the night to try the original. It is also the home of the best Korean street food in the country — the village's evening market stalls are a delight to browse after dinner.
Accessibility: The hanok village streets are flat and well paved, making for very easy walking. A few traditional courtyards have a raised threshold to step over, and Soo-Yeon is always at hand to assist.
10

Fly to Jeju Island

Jeju Island

This morning we transfer to the airport and take a short internal flight to Jeju, Korea's volcanic island paradise in the southern sea and its most beloved holiday destination. On arrival we settle into the elegant Grand Hyatt Jeju, your home for four restful nights, with the rest of the day free to relax and enjoy the resort after the journey south.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Grand Hyatt Jeju ★★★★★
Accessibility: The internal flight to Jeju is barely an hour, on a full-size jet, with airport assistance arranged for anyone who would value it. The Grand Hyatt is fully lift-served with spacious, accessible rooms.
11

Eastern Jeju: Seongsan & Manjanggul

Jeju Island

A day exploring Jeju's dramatic volcanic east. We begin at Seongsan Ilchulbong, the "Sunrise Peak", a vast tuff cone rising sheer from the sea — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Korea's most iconic sights. Later we descend into the extraordinary Manjanggul lava tube, one of the finest in the world, before meeting Jeju's famous haenyeo, the women free-divers who still harvest abalone and seaweed from the sea by hand.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Grand Hyatt Jeju ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The haenyeo of Jeju are recognised by UNESCO and many are now in their seventies and eighties — a humbling, inspiring sight. We time our visit for their performance and the freshly caught seafood served right beside the water afterwards is unforgettable.
Accessibility: The climb to the rim of Seongsan Ilchulbong involves a steady stairway of around 30–40 minutes and is entirely optional — the cone is magnificent from the level coastal path below, where the haenyeo also perform. Manjanggul has a flat but naturally uneven, damp and dimly lit floor; sturdy shoes are essential and we provide a torch, with the option to view just the dramatic first section.
12

Hallasan Foothills & the Coast

Jeju Island

Today we explore the green heart and southern shore of the island. We walk a gentle trail through the forested foothills of Hallasan, Korea's highest mountain and a dormant volcano at the island's centre, then drive the spectacular southern coast to the Jusangjeolli cliffs of hexagonal basalt columns and the Cheonjiyeon waterfall. A relaxed and scenic day amid Jeju's natural beauty.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Grand Hyatt Jeju ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Jeju is famous for its citrus, its black pork and its green tea. The Osulloc tea fields make a lovely, restful stop, and I always build in time for a quiet cup overlooking the rows of tea bushes.
Accessibility: We choose one of the gentler, lower Hallasan trails rather than the demanding summit routes — these are well-graded forest paths that can be shortened to suit. The waterfall and basalt-cliff viewpoints are reached by flat, paved walkways with handrails.
13

Jeju at Leisure

Jeju Island

A free day to enjoy Jeju entirely at your own pace. You might relax at the hotel and its spa, stroll a stretch of the island's celebrated Olle coastal walking paths, visit the manicured Spirit Garden of bonsai, or browse a local market. Soo-Yeon is on hand to arrange anything you wish, or simply to leave you in peace — this is your day.

Meals: BreakfastHotel: Grand Hyatt Jeju ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Olle trails are divided into numbered sections of varying length and difficulty; I can suggest a short, flat coastal stretch that takes in the prettiest scenery in an hour or two, with a café at the end for a well-earned rest.
14

Departure

Jeju Island / Seoul

After a final breakfast, Soo-Yeon escorts you to the airport for your flight home (most departures connect via Seoul Incheon), ensuring the last day is as smooth and unhurried as every one before it. You leave with memories of palaces and temples, royal tombs and volcanic shores, and a country that surprises and delights at every turn.

Pacing & accessibility

A thorough fortnight that covers the length of the country, from Seoul to the southern islands. Sightseeing days are full but never rushed, with longer journeys made comfortable by high-speed rail and a private car, and proper time built in to rest and absorb.

Walking

Generally 3–4.5km per day, mostly on flat city streets, paved temple courtyards and gentle paths. Optional climbs (Seokguram approach, Seongsan Ilchulbong, Haedong Yonggungsa steps) add more for those who wish.

Transport

Private air-conditioned vehicle throughout, first-class KTX high-speed trains between cities, and one short internal flight to Jeju. No coach travel; all journeys broken with comfort stops.

Soo-Yeon was born and raised in Seoul and has spent more than fifteen years sharing her country with discerning international visitors. Guest reviews

A country we knew nothing about — and now adore

We had visited Japan twice and wondered whether Korea could compare. It absolutely did, and in some ways surpassed it. Soo-Yeon was the finest guide we have ever travelled with — calm, cultured and wonderfully attentive to the fact that we are both in our seventies. The high-speed trains were a revelation, the hotels faultless, and Jeju Island a complete surprise. The Signiel in Seoul was the most spectacular hotel we have ever stayed in.

Perfect for a solo traveller of a certain age

At 71 and travelling alone I was a little apprehensive about somewhere as unfamiliar as Korea, but from the airport onwards I was looked after beautifully. The single supplement was waived on my departure, which was a lovely bonus. The DMZ was extraordinary and moving, the night in the traditional hanok at Andong unforgettable, and meeting the haenyeo women divers on Jeju quite humbling. I cannot recommend Soo-Yeon and this tour highly enough.

Fourteen days, and never once felt rushed

We were drawn by the pace as much as the destination, and it was judged perfectly. Full, interesting days balanced with proper time to rest, and the longer journeys made effortless by the trains and the private car. Gyeongju's royal tombs and the temple of Bulguksa were the cultural highlights for us; the four nights on Jeju at the end were exactly the restful finale we needed. Worth every penny of a premium tour.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do UK citizens need a visa or K-ETA for South Korea?

UK passport holders do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. South Korea operates a K-ETA (electronic travel authorisation) scheme, but UK visitors have been temporarily exempted from it through to the end of 2025, with the position reviewed periodically. We always confirm the very latest entry requirements with you at the time of booking and send full, current instructions with your confirmation. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

Korea is a four-season country and this tour runs in its two loveliest periods. Autumn (October and November) brings mild, dry, clear days and spectacular foliage, and is widely considered the finest time to travel. Spring (late March and April) offers fresh, mild weather and, on the April departure, the famous cherry blossom. December is cold but bright and crisp, with far fewer visitors. We avoid the humid, rainy summer months entirely.

How accessible is this tour, and what if I have limited mobility?

Korea is one of the easier Asian countries for mature travellers — clean, orderly, with excellent facilities and lifts almost everywhere. That said, several temples and viewpoints involve steps, and a few optional climbs (Seongsan Ilchulbong, the Seokguram approach, the steps at Haedong Yonggungsa) can be skipped entirely without missing the essence of the site. Seoul, the Gyeongju tombs, the Jeonju village and much of Jeju are largely flat and accessible. Do speak to us about any mobility concerns and Soo-Yeon will tailor the daily pace and choose the gentler routes throughout.

Is the internal flight to Jeju included, and what is it like?

Yes — the short flight from the mainland to Jeju Island is included in the tour price. It is a comfortable hour-long hop on a full-size jet, on one of Korea's excellent domestic carriers, and is one of the busiest and most efficient air routes in the world. Airport assistance can be arranged for anyone who would value it, and Soo-Yeon accompanies you throughout.

Will I be able to manage the food, and can dietary needs be catered for?

Korean cuisine is one of the great pleasures of this tour, and far more varied than many expect — from gentle, comforting dishes such as bibimbap, braised chicken and grilled meats to delicate temple cuisine. Not everything is spicy, and milder options are always available. We are very happy to cater for vegetarian, gluten-free and other dietary requirements, and Western dining is available at every hotel should you wish for something familiar. Simply let us know your preferences in advance.
