10-Day Cambodia: Temples, Mekong & Countryside
Angkor, the bamboo train, river life on the Mekong and Cambodia beyond the temple circuit

About this tour
Most visitors to Cambodia do Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh. Very few take the time to see the rest of Cambodia — the riverside town of Battambang with its extraordinary French colonial architecture and the famous bamboo train, the Mekong River north of Phnom Penh where Irrawaddy dolphins can still be found, and the rural landscape of rice paddies and wooden stilt houses that has remained essentially unchanged for centuries. This ten-day tour does all of it. Angkor gets three full days — enough time to do it properly rather than rush. But then the tour turns north-west to Battambang, east to the Mekong, and south to Phnom Penh through countryside that has almost no tourist infrastructure and enormous quiet beauty. Oliver leads this tour with particular affection for the Battambang and Mekong sections — the parts of Cambodia that his guests almost never expect to be moved by, and almost always are.

Why this works for travellers over 50
- Three days at Angkor — enough time to absorb the temples rather than sprint between them
- Battambang's French colonial quarter is flat, car-light and extraordinarily photogenic
- The bamboo train is one of Asia's most delightfully improbable transport experiences
- Irrawaddy dolphin watching on the Mekong near Kratie — one of the rarest sightings in Southeast Asia
- Small group of 12 maximum — the rural Cambodia sections feel genuinely intimate
- No day requires more than 4km walking

Battambang
The bamboo train: a flat bamboo platform on two sets of wheels, powered by a small engine — assembled in minutes, capable of 40km/h, and used by villagers to transport goods across the countryside. A journey of about 8km along an old single track, stopping to let oncoming trains pass by the simple expedient of one platform being disassembled and stacked by the side of the track. One of Asia's most charming experiences. Afternoon: Battambang's extraordinary French colonial quarter on foot with Oliver. Optional Phare Circus performance in the evening.

Who will plan your holiday
Oliver Reed
Oliver designed the Battambang and Mekong sections of this tour himself — they represent his personal conviction that Cambodia's greatest gift to visitors is not Angkor alone but the countryside and river life beyond it. The dolphin watch at Kratie is his favourite morning of any tour. He describes watching the first dolphin surface ten metres from a guest's boat as "the moment Cambodia stops being a history lesson and becomes something personal."

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Cambodia beyond Angkor — completely wonderful
“We had been to Angkor before and were not sure we needed to go again. Oliver persuaded us that this tour was different — and it was. Battambang was completely unexpected: the French colonial buildings, the bamboo train, the Phare Circus. The dolphins at Kratie brought Margaret to tears. Oliver's knowledge and warmth are extraordinary. The best tour we have ever done.”

The Mekong dolphins alone are worth the trip
“I chose this tour because of the dolphin watching and came home enriched by everything that surrounded it. Battambang is one of the most beautiful provincial towns in Asia and nobody goes there. Oliver is quietly extraordinary — his preparation for the Tuol Sleng visit was the most thoughtful thing a guide has ever done for me on a tour.”

Ten days that told us something new every day
“We are experienced Southeast Asia travellers and were not expecting to be surprised. Oliver surprised us at every turn. The bamboo train is the most charming thing we have done on any holiday anywhere. The Battambang Phare Circus was genuinely world class. Angkor was everything we expected — and then Oliver explained the astronomical alignment and it became extraordinary.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Are Irrawaddy dolphin sightings guaranteed?
Sightings are not guaranteed in nature, but the dolphin population at Kampi Pool in Kratie is relatively stable and the dolphins are reliably active in the early morning. Oliver has led this boat trip more than 200 times and has missed a sighting on only three occasions. We consider it a very high-probability encounter.
What is the bamboo train like?
The bamboo train (norry) is a flat platform — about 3 metres long — placed on two sets of small railway wheels and powered by a small petrol engine. It runs along a single track through the countryside at surprisingly brisk speed. When two trains meet, the lighter one is simply lifted off the rails to let the other pass. The whole experience lasts about an hour and is completely delightful — and slightly absurd.
Are the drive days comfortable?
All driving is in modern, air-conditioned private vehicles. The longest single drive is from Battambang to Kratie (about 4 hours), broken with a lunch stop and rest at a riverside café. Oliver uses drive time for stories about the countryside you're passing through. No journey is uncomfortable.
Is the Phare Circus suitable for over-60s?
The Phare Circus is a seated performance — acrobatics, dance and storytelling by Cambodian young adults. It lasts about 75 minutes. The venue has good seating and accessibility. It is not a traditional circus with animals — it is an extraordinary performance art show. Oliver rates it as one of Cambodia's best experiences.
How is the accommodation in Battambang and Kratie?
Battambang Resort is a lovely 4-star riverside property — comfortable, characterful and with a good pool. Kratie's Rajabori Villas are beautiful wooden riverside villas — more boutique than luxury, but very comfortable and perfectly positioned. Both are significantly below the standard of the Raffles hotels but both are the best available in their respective locations and have been personally assessed by Oliver.
Can I skip Battambang and go direct to Phnom Penh?
Technically yes, but we strongly advise against it. Battambang is the single most common "unexpected highlight" mentioned in reviews of this tour — guests consistently say it was the day they had not anticipated and loved most. Removing it would produce a standard Angkor + Phnom Penh tour, which is our 8-day Classic. The 10-day tour is specifically designed to give Cambodia the depth it deserves.
