The pink city, the blue city, the lake city and the golden desert — Rajasthan in full

About this tour
Rajasthan is India at its most theatrical. The state of the Rajput warrior kings — who built forts on every hilltop, painted their cities in candy colours and died rather than surrender — produces landscapes that feel like imagination rather than reality. The Blue City of Jodhpur. The Lake City of Udaipur, its palace floating on water. The Gold City of Jaisalmer, rising from the Thar Desert like a mirage. The Pink City of Jaipur, its ancient observatory calculating the movements of the heavens. This fourteen-night tour travels the full arc of Rajasthan — from Jaipur in the east to Jaisalmer in the west and back via Jodhpur and Udaipur, staying one night in the Thar Desert in a luxury tented camp that makes sleeping on sand feel like the most comfortable night of the trip. Priya accompanies the entire journey. Her knowledge of Rajput history, art and architecture is exceptional, and her ability to make the warrior culture of mediaeval India vivid and comprehensible is remarkable.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Rajasthan is the most beautiful place we have ever visited
“We chose Rajasthan over all other India options because of the palace hotels. The Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur completely justified the choice — it is the most extraordinary hotel either of us has ever stayed in. The night in the Thar Desert camp was genuinely magical — the silence and the stars. Priya's depth of knowledge made every fort and palace intelligible as a story rather than a collection of buildings.”

Every hotel was extraordinary — which I did not expect to be able to say
“I have been on tours where "luxury accommodation" means a four-star business hotel. Not here. Rambagh Palace, Raas Jodhpur (incredible views of the Blue City from the rooftop), the desert camp, the Taj Lake Palace — each one completely different and each one extraordinary. Priya is one of the finest guides I have encountered in forty years of international travel.”

Fourteen days is exactly right for Rajasthan
“We nearly booked the 12-day Golden Triangle instead. We are very glad we chose the Rajasthan tour. The extra days give each city the time it deserves — we never felt rushed anywhere. Jodhpur's Mehrangarh Fort was the single most impressive building either of us has ever entered. Priya was wonderful.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the night in the desert camp comfortable for older travellers?
The Desert Tulip Camp is genuinely comfortable — the tents are large (about the size of a good hotel room), the beds have proper mattresses and pillows, and the bathrooms have flush toilets and hot showers. The sand is, of course, sand — it is not flat like a hotel floor. For those who are concerned, a jeep transfer to the camp is available instead of the camel safari. The dinner and the night sky are the experience; the getting there is secondary.
How long are the drives between cities?
Jaipur to Jodhpur: 5 hours. Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: 4.5 hours. Jaisalmer to Jodhpur (overnight): 4.5 hours. Jodhpur to Udaipur: 5 hours. These are the longest drives. All are in a private air-conditioned vehicle with Priya. She uses drive time for historical narrative, storytelling and quiet when guests prefer it. Rest stops are frequent. The drives through the Rajasthan landscape are genuinely beautiful.
Is the Taj Lake Palace accessible only by boat?
Yes — the hotel is on an island in Lake Pichola and the only access is by the hotel's private boat (about 4 minutes). The hotel's jetty has a gentle ramp — fully accessible for walking aids. The island hotel grounds are mostly flat. It is one of the most extraordinary arrivals of any hotel in the world.
What is the best city in Rajasthan?
Priya says she is professionally obliged not to have a favourite. Off the record, she says Udaipur — for the lake, the light and the Mewar royal story. Many guests say Jodhpur — for Mehrangarh Fort, which is simply the most dramatic building in India. Most guests say the desert camp night, which is not technically a city, was the best moment of all.
Can the camel safari in the desert be replaced with a jeep?
Absolutely — all guests choose their preferred mode of transfer to the desert camp. The camel safari is about 45 minutes; the jeep is about 20 minutes. Both arrive at the same camp. Many guests do half the journey by camel and half by jeep. Please advise at booking and again on Day 7.
Are there alternatives to the long drives?
Some of the drive days can be converted to short domestic flights at a supplement (Jaisalmer is served by IndiGo). We offer this option at booking for guests who prefer not to do the full 4.5-hour Jodhpur–Jaisalmer drive. However, Priya notes that the Rajasthan landscape itself is spectacular — the camel caravans, the fort ruins on every ridge, the villages in the desert — and many guests consider the drives themselves part of the experience.
