About this tour

Some journeys are designed as a single mood; this one is designed as an arc. It begins with the great set-pieces of northern India — Delhi, the Taj Mahal at Agra, the pink palaces of Jaipur — then crosses the water to Sri Lanka, an island that packs ancient cities, elephant herds, hill-country tea estates and gentle Buddhist culture into a space you can cross in a few unhurried days. And it ends, deliberately, with stillness: a five-star Maldivian overwater villa where the only thing asked of you is to slow down. We have shaped the whole twenty-one days around the mature traveller. Every transfer is private. The longer road sections are broken with rest stops, and where a fort or a rock fortress involves a climb, there is always a gentler alternative or a place to wait in comfort. The cultural days sit in the first two weeks, while you are fresh; the restful days arrive exactly when you want them. Your specialist accompanies the India and Sri Lanka legs throughout — one continuous, knowledgeable presence across two very different countries — handing you over to a five-star resort team for the final Maldives chapter. The result is a journey that moves from the Mughal north to the Indian Ocean's calmest water, with the change of pace working in your favour at every stage.

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrive Delhi — Welcome to India

Delhi

Arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport, where Priya and your private driver meet you. A short transfer to your hotel in central Delhi and time to settle in before a relaxed welcome dinner introducing the journey ahead.

Meals: DWalking: approx. 0.4 kmHotel: The Claridges New Delhi ★★★★
Specialist tip: After a long flight, do nothing strenuous today. The welcome dinner is deliberately early so you can rest properly before the first full day.
Accessibility: Step-free arrival and hotel entrance. Lift to all floors. No walking required on day one beyond the lobby and restaurant.
2

Old & New Delhi at a Gentle Pace

Delhi

A relaxed tour of the capital with plenty of seated stops — Humayun's Tomb, the towering Qutub Minar and a drive past the grand colonial avenues of New Delhi. A cycle-rickshaw glides you through the lanes of Chandni Chowk so you see Old Delhi without the walking.

Meals: B, LWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: The Claridges New Delhi ★★★★
Specialist tip: Humayun's Tomb is the rehearsal for the Taj you'll see in two days — the same Mughal symmetry, far fewer crowds. A lovely place to sit a while.
Accessibility: Humayun's Tomb has ramped access to the main platform. The cycle-rickshaw replaces walking in the crowded Old Delhi lanes. Benches available at each monument.
3

Drive to Agra — Taj Mahal at Dusk

Agra

A morning drive south on the Yamuna Expressway with a comfortable rest stop en route. After lunch and a chance to freshen up, your first sight of the Taj Mahal — visited in the softer light of late afternoon, when the marble warms to gold.

Meals: B, LWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Courtyard by Marriott Agra ★★★★
Specialist tip: Seeing the Taj first at dusk and again at dawn is the secret. Tonight you simply soak it in — tomorrow you photograph it.
Accessibility: Electric buggy carries you from the gate towards the monument. Wheelchairs available free at the Taj. Smooth marble paths inside; a few shallow steps with handrails near the plinth.
4

Taj Mahal at Dawn & Agra Fort

Agra

An early but gentle start to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise, with the monument at its most serene. Back to the hotel for a proper breakfast and a rest, then the red-sandstone Agra Fort in the cooler afternoon, with views across the river to the Taj.

Meals: B, LWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Courtyard by Marriott Agra ★★★★
Specialist tip: We return to the hotel after sunrise for breakfast and a lie-down. There is no need to push through — the fort waits until the afternoon when it is cooler.
Accessibility: Dawn visit again uses the buggy and step-free marble approach. Agra Fort has ramps to the main courtyards; the upper sections are optional and can be skipped with a shaded place to rest.
5

Fatehpur Sikri & on to Jaipur

Jaipur

A scenic drive to Jaipur, pausing at the abandoned Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri — a perfectly preserved red-sandstone city. Lunch en route, with a rest stop, before arriving in the Pink City in the late afternoon.

Meals: B, LWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Trident Jaipur ★★★★
Specialist tip: Fatehpur Sikri is often skipped on faster tours. It is one of my favourite places to wander slowly — and there is always shade and a seat.
Accessibility: Fatehpur Sikri involves some uneven historic paving and a short flight of steps; a vehicle drops you close to the entrance and the most level courtyards can be enjoyed without the steps.
6

Jaipur — Amber Fort & the Pink City

Jaipur

The hilltop Amber Fort, reached comfortably by jeep up to the gate, then the City Palace, the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar and a photo stop at the honeycomb façade of the Hawa Mahal. A relaxed evening at leisure.

Meals: B, LWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Trident Jaipur ★★★★
Specialist tip: We take the jeep up to Amber rather than the elephants or the long walk — kinder on the knees and you arrive at the gate ready to enjoy it.
Accessibility: A jeep carries you up to the Amber Fort gate, avoiding the long ramp climb. Inside, the main courtyards are reasonably level with some steps that can be skipped. City Palace and Jantar Mantar are largely flat.
7

Jaipur at Leisure

Jaipur

A free morning to rest, swim or browse Jaipur's celebrated bazaars for textiles, gems and blue pottery. An optional gentle visit to a block-printing workshop. This is a deliberate breather before the flight to Sri Lanka tomorrow.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Trident Jaipur ★★★★
Specialist tip: Use today to pack and rest. Tomorrow involves a flight via Delhi or Mumbai to Colombo, so a quiet day now pays dividends.
Accessibility: Entirely flexible day. The hotel pool and gardens are step-free. Any shopping or workshop visit is at your own pace with the car on call.
8

Fly to Sri Lanka — Arrive Colombo

Negombo

A morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Colombo (via Delhi or Mumbai). On arrival, your Sri Lankan driver meets you for the short transfer to a comfortable beachside hotel at Negombo, near the airport, for a restful first night on the island.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Jetwing Beach Negombo ★★★★
Specialist tip: We stay at Negombo rather than driving straight into Colombo traffic — a calm beach hotel twenty minutes from the airport is the gentlest way to land.
Accessibility: Private assistance through both airports. Step-free hotel arrival close to the airport to keep the travel day short and easy.
9

Into the Cultural Triangle — Dambulla Cave Temples

Sigiriya

A scenic drive inland to the Cultural Triangle, with a rest stop and a spice-garden visit en route. This afternoon, the golden Dambulla Cave Temples — five rock shrines filled with Buddha statues and centuries-old painted ceilings.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Aliya Resort & Spa Sigiriya ★★★★
Specialist tip: Aliya Resort frames Sigiriya Rock across a lily pond — ask for a room facing it, and you can admire tomorrow's climb with a cup of tea in hand.
Accessibility: The Dambulla caves sit atop a stepped climb of around 350m. Those who prefer not to climb can enjoy the golden temple and museum at the base while others visit, then rejoin for the drive.
10

Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Village Life

Sigiriya

An early, cool-of-the-morning visit to the extraordinary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the fifth-century palace atop a sheer rock. The climb is optional and unhurried. Later, a gentle bullock-cart and catamaran experience through a traditional lakeside village, with a home-cooked Sri Lankan lunch.

Meals: B, LWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Aliya Resort & Spa Sigiriya ★★★★
Specialist tip: You do not have to summit Sigiriya to feel its magic. Many guests walk the moated water gardens at the base, photograph the rock, and find that more than enough.
Accessibility: Sigiriya is a steep climb of around 1,200 steps and is entirely optional. The water gardens and frescoes at the base are reachable on the level. The neighbouring, lower Pidurangala viewpoint or a garden visit are gentler alternatives Priya can arrange.
11

Ancient Polonnaruwa & an Elephant Encounter

Sigiriya

A morning exploring the ruined royal city of Polonnaruwa, much of it seen comfortably by vehicle with short level walks to the finest carvings. This afternoon, a responsible elephant experience — an ethical sanctuary or a wildlife drive in Minneriya where wild herds gather.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Aliya Resort & Spa Sigiriya ★★★★
Specialist tip: We use only ethical elephant experiences — observation in the wild or a genuine sanctuary, never rides. The Minneriya "Gathering" of wild elephants is one of Asia's great wildlife sights.
Accessibility: Polonnaruwa can be toured largely from the vehicle with short, flat walks to each monument. The wildlife drive is conducted from a comfortable 4x4 with no walking required.
12

Temple of the Tooth — on to Kandy

Kandy

A drive south into the hills to Kandy, the island's cultural capital, pausing at a cave temple and a rest stop. This evening, the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic beside Kandy Lake, followed by a colourful Kandyan cultural dance performance.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Cinnamon Citadel Kandy ★★★★
Specialist tip: Visit the Temple of the Tooth at evening puja, when the drumming begins and the relic chamber is opened. Arrive a little early and we find you a place to sit.
Accessibility: The Temple of the Tooth has step-free access to the main shrine areas via ramps; some inner sections involve stairs and are optional. Modest dress required — shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed.
13

Kandy — Botanical Gardens & Lake

Kandy

A relaxed morning at the magnificent Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, with its avenues of giant trees and orchid house — much of it explorable on flat paths or by buggy. A gentle stroll by Kandy Lake and a free afternoon.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Cinnamon Citadel Kandy ★★★★
Specialist tip: Peradeniya is one of the loveliest gardens in Asia and beautifully flat. Take the buggy to the orchid house and the great Javan fig, then sit a while.
Accessibility: The botanical gardens have wide, level paths and a buggy service for those who prefer not to walk the full grounds. Plenty of benches and shade.
14

The Famous Hill-Country Train to Tea Country

Nuwara Eliya

A highlight of the journey — a stretch of the celebrated hill-country railway, in reserved first-class seats, winding past emerald tea plantations, waterfalls and misty peaks. Your car meets the train and continues to the colonial hill station of Nuwara Eliya.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Heritance Tea Factory Nuwara Eliya ★★★★
Specialist tip: We book reserved first-class seats so you are guaranteed a comfortable place by the window. The leg we choose is the prettiest and avoids the most crowded sections.
Accessibility: Reserved seats are arranged on the train. Station platforms involve a few steps and a gap to the carriage; your driver and the station team assist with boarding and luggage. The scenic ride itself requires no walking.
15

Tea Estates & Highland Air

Nuwara Eliya

A morning at a working tea estate and factory — the full story from leaf to cup, with a tasting — followed by the cool, green calm of "Little England". The Heritance Tea Factory hotel is itself a beautifully restored 1930s tea factory. A restful afternoon at altitude.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Heritance Tea Factory Nuwara Eliya ★★★★
Specialist tip: At 1,900m the air is cool and a touch thin — perfect for sleeping, but ease into the day. A jumper for the evenings is essential, even in the tropics.
Accessibility: The tea-factory tour has some stairs between levels; the tasting room and main viewpoints are accessible without the full climb. Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,900m — take the cool, thin air gently.
16

Descend to Colombo — Indian Ocean Farewell to Sri Lanka

Colombo

A scenic descent from the hills to Colombo, with comfortable rest stops, arriving in time for a relaxed city orientation — the colonial Fort district, Galle Face Green and the seafront. A farewell dinner with Priya marks the end of the Sri Lanka leg.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Cinnamon Grand Colombo ★★★★
Specialist tip: A sundowner on Galle Face Green as the kite-sellers come out is the perfect Sri Lankan farewell. Tomorrow, the sea takes over entirely.
Accessibility: The Colombo orientation is largely conducted by car with short, flat stops. The hotel is fully step-free with lifts throughout.
17

Fly to the Maldives — Arrive by Speedboat

Maldives (South Malé Atoll)

A short morning flight from Colombo to Malé, where the resort's team greets you. A scenic speedboat transfer across the turquoise lagoon brings you to your overwater villa. The afternoon is yours — step straight from your deck into the warm Indian Ocean.

Meals: B, L, DWalking: approx. 0.4 kmHotel: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo is adults-only and dine-around all-inclusive — the calmest possible finale. Your villa has glass floor panels and a private deck with steps into the lagoon.
Accessibility: The speedboat transfer involves a short step down with crew assistance. Overwater villas are reached along a connecting jetty; please tell us of any mobility needs so we can request a villa nearest the main deck.
18

Maldives — Your Overwater Villa

Maldives (South Malé Atoll)

A full day of doing as little or as much as you wish. Snorkel the house reef straight from your villa steps, take a guided reef excursion, or simply rest on your deck. All meals and the overwater spa's calm are at hand.

Meals: B, L, DWalking: approx. 0.3 kmHotel: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The house reef here is genuinely excellent — turtles and reef fish right beneath the jetties. Borrow a mask at the dive centre and snorkel at your own pace in the calm lagoon.
Accessibility: Everything on the island is reachable on flat boardwalks. Buggy assistance can be requested. The house reef is accessed directly from villa steps or from the gentle beach.
19

Maldives — Reef, Sunset & Stillness

Maldives (South Malé Atoll)

Another unhurried day in paradise. An optional sunset dolphin cruise, a treatment in the overwater spa, or simply the rhythm of sea and sky. The pace is entirely your own.

Meals: B, L, DWalking: approx. 0.3 kmHotel: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The sunset dolphin cruise is the one excursion I always recommend — pods of spinner dolphins riding the bow as the sky turns. Otherwise, a hammock and a book is a perfectly good plan.
Accessibility: The optional dolphin cruise is by comfortable boat with crew assistance boarding. All resort facilities remain step-free and close at hand.
20

Maldives — A Final Day at the Lagoon

Maldives (South Malé Atoll)

A last full day to enjoy the villa and lagoon at leisure before the journey home tomorrow. A final swim, a long lunch, and time to let twenty-one days of India, Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean settle.

Meals: B, L, DWalking: approx. 0.3 kmHotel: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Ask for a late check-out and a day-use room so you can shower and rest before the evening flight. There is no need to vacate your comfort early.
Accessibility: A fully flexible, step-free day. Late check-out and a day-use room can be arranged for your departure to keep the final day comfortable.
21

Speedboat to Malé — Fly Home

Maldives — UK

A speedboat transfer back across the lagoon to Malé in good time for your flight home, connecting via a Gulf or Asian hub. Twenty-one days that carried you from the Taj Mahal to the open Indian Ocean come gently to a close.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 0.3 km
Specialist tip: Direct and one-stop options home are available from Malé. We arrange your return to your local UK airport so the very last leg is as easy as the first.
Accessibility: Speedboat transfer with crew assistance and full meet-and-assist at Malé airport. Wheelchair assistance can be arranged for all flights on request.

Fitness & mobility

Pacing & accessibility

Moderate across 21 days — India's Golden Triangle and Sri Lanka's cultural triangle hold the more active days (fort climbs are always optional, with a vehicle alternative), while the tea-country and Maldives sections are restful. Private transfers, frequent rest stops and free afternoons are built in throughout.

Walking

Transport

Altitude

Mostly low: Delhi (214m), Agra (169m), Jaipur (431m) and Sri Lanka's lowlands at sea level. Nuwara Eliya in the tea country sits at around 1,900m — pleasantly cool, with the thinner air taken gently over two restful days. The Maldives is at sea level.

Who will plan your holiday

Priya Sharma

Priya has spent fourteen years guiding across the Indian subcontinent and knows both India and Sri Lanka intimately. She designed this arc precisely for mature travellers who want the great cultural set-pieces without ever feeling rushed. "The trick," she says, "is sequence — the demanding days first, the restful days exactly when the body wants them, and the Maldives as a reward you have genuinely earned." She accompanies the India and Sri Lanka legs throughout, then hands you to a five-star resort team who look after you superbly for the final chapter.

What our guests say

Guest reviews

4.9/ 5 — 41 reviews

Three countries, one beautifully judged journey

We are both in our late sixties and worried that three countries in three weeks would be exhausting. It was the opposite. The hard work — the forts, the temples — comes early while you are fresh, and by the time you reach the tea country and then the Maldives you are simply gliding. Every transfer was private and on time, every climb optional. The Maldives villa at the end felt thoroughly earned. Priya thought of everything.

A solo traveller looked after at every turn

I travelled alone and chose the January departure because the single supplement was waived. From the moment I landed in Delhi I was never left to fend for myself — Priya and the drivers were endlessly kind, and they always found me somewhere to sit while others tackled the steps at Sigiriya. The hill-country train in a reserved seat was a joy. Then four nights in an overwater villa with the reef beneath me. I cannot fault it.

The pacing was the making of it

We have done faster tours that left us shattered. This one understood that we are not in our forties anymore. Frequent rest stops on the road, a deliberately quiet day in Jaipur before the flight, the gentlest possible arrival in Sri Lanka at Negombo. The elephant gathering at Minneriya brought tears to my wife's eyes. And the Maldives — well, four nights was exactly right, not a night too few.

Culture, wildlife and the sea — it really has it all

The promise of this trip is culture, wildlife and beach in one arc, and it delivers each one properly rather than skimming. The Taj at dawn was unforgettable, Polonnaruwa toured mostly from the car so my knees were spared, ethical elephants, then tea estates and finally that lagoon. The value astonished me for what is included. I have already recommended it to three friends.

Wonderful — just allow for the travel days

A magnificent journey and beautifully organised. Our only note for fellow travellers is to be realistic about the inter-country flights — they break the rhythm a little, though Priya warned us and built quiet days around them. The hotels were a genuine cut above what we expected at this price, and the Maldives resort was faultless. We would happily do it again.

Before you go

Practical information

Visa requirements

Currency

Three currencies. India: Indian Rupee (≈108 INR to £1). Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan Rupee (≈380 LKR to £1). Maldives: US dollars are used throughout the resort, where most spending is on an all-inclusive basis. Cards are widely accepted in cities; carry some cash for markets and small purchases.

Tipping

Guide: £10–12 per day. Drivers in India and Sri Lanka: £5–7 per day each. Hotel staff: a small amount per bag and at checkout. Maldives gratuities are largely covered by the all-inclusive service charge, with a small tip for villa and dive staff at your discretion. Priya advises on appropriate amounts as you go.

Electricity

230V / 50Hz across all three countries. India uses Type C and D (Type G UK 3-pin in better hotels); Sri Lanka and the Maldives commonly use Type G (UK 3-pin) and Type D. A universal adapter covers every stop. All our partner hotels and the Maldives villas have UK-compatible sockets.

Health & vaccinations

Flights

We arrange return flights from your local UK airport, typically via a Gulf or Asian hub, plus the two included inter-country flights (Jaipur–Colombo and Colombo–Malé). The Maldives resort is reached by a short speedboat from Malé. Premium-cabin upgrades on the long-haul legs are available on request.

Local transport

A private air-conditioned vehicle and driver-guide accompany the entire India and Sri Lanka legs, with reserved first-class seats on the hill-country scenic train. At the Taj you travel by electric buggy; at Amber Fort by jeep to the gate. The Maldives is reached and explored by speedboat and flat island boardwalks. All transfers are included and fully escorted.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is three countries in three weeks too much for a traveller in their sixties or seventies?

Not the way this tour is built. The sequence is deliberate: the more active sightseeing in India and Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle comes in the first two weeks while you are freshest, then the pace eases through the tea country and dissolves entirely into four restful nights in the Maldives. Every transfer is private, long road days are broken with rest stops, and every climb is optional. Most of our guests are aged 55 to 75.

Do I have to climb Sigiriya Rock or the Dambulla caves?

No. Both involve significant steps and are entirely optional. At Sigiriya you can enjoy the moated water gardens and frescoes at the base, photograph the rock, and skip the summit climb — many guests do exactly that. At Dambulla you can visit the golden temple and museum at the foot while others go up. Priya always arranges a comfortable, shaded place to wait and rejoin the group.

What does the from price of £1,995 include, and why is it so reasonable?

The £1,995 is a per-person, land-only "from" anchor price for the lead departures: it covers your hotels and the Maldives overwater villa, private transfers, guiding, the scenic train, entrance fees and the meals specified. International and inter-country flights are arranged separately from your local UK airport so we can find you the best fare. The value reflects our careful choice of strong 4-star hotels through India and Sri Lanka, with the single five-star splurge saved for the Maldives finale.

Is the Maldives resort really five-star, and what is the overwater villa like?

Yes. The final four nights are at Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, an intimate adults-only five-star island in South Malé Atoll, on an all-inclusive dine-around basis. Your overwater villa sits on stilts above the lagoon with glass floor panels, a private deck and steps straight into an excellent house reef. It is reached by a short speedboat from Malé rather than a seaplane, which keeps the transfer simple and comfortable.

How much walking is involved on a typical day?

Genuinely modest — an average of under 2km a day and a maximum of around 3.5km, always at an unhurried pace with frequent seated breaks. Polonnaruwa is toured largely from the vehicle, the Taj is reached by buggy, Amber Fort by jeep, and the Maldives days require almost no walking at all. A walking stick is perfectly fine; please tell us of any mobility needs at booking so we can tailor each day.

What are the inter-country flights like, and are they included?

There are two short inter-country flights — Jaipur to Colombo (via Delhi or Mumbai) and Colombo to Malé — both included in your package and fully escorted with meet-and-assist at every airport. We deliberately schedule a quiet, restful day on either side of each flight so they never feel rushed. They do add a little travel time, which is why this is a 21-day rather than a shorter itinerary.

I am travelling solo — is this tour suitable, and what about the single supplement?

It is very well suited to solo travellers, and several of our guests on this arc travel alone. The single supplement is a modest £895, and it is waived altogether on the January 2027 and October 2027 departures. As an escorted tour you are never left to sort out a transfer, a flight connection or a dinner reservation on your own — Priya and the local teams look after every detail.

When is the best time to go?

Our departures fall in the optimal weather window for the whole arc — October to March. This is the dry, sunny season for the Maldives and the Golden Triangle, and it neatly avoids the heaviest of Sri Lanka's monsoons in the regions you visit. India's north is pleasantly cool in December and January, while the Maldives is warm and calm year-round across our dates.
