10-Day Taj Mahal & North India
The world's most beautiful building and India's most sacred city — Delhi, the Taj and the Ganges
From
£2,895pp
About this tour
Two of the most extraordinary experiences in the world are both in northern India. The Taj Mahal is the most beautiful building on earth — no other monument inspires the same visceral response at first sight, and no photograph remotely captures the reality of standing before it at dawn. Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world — 3,000 years of Hindu civilisation on the banks of the sacred Ganges, where pilgrims bathe, priests perform fire ceremonies, and the cycle of life and death is conducted entirely in public. This ten-day tour combines both: three days in Delhi (enough time for both Old and New Delhi), three days in Agra (the Taj Mahal at sunrise and at dusk), and four days in Varanasi — enough time to genuinely understand what you are witnessing on the ghats.

Priya says Varanasi is the place that humbles her every time — "It is the oldest city in the world and it does not care what you think of it. It simply is." Her preparation for the dawn boat trip and the burning ghats visit is among the most carefully crafted elements of her guiding — she has spent years developing an explanation of the Hindu cycle of life and death that is accessible to anyone and illuminates the entire Varanasi experience.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Two of the most profound experiences of our lives in one ten-day tour
“The Taj Mahal at dawn and the Ganges at dawn — we debated which was more extraordinary. We could not decide. They are both completely beyond description. Priya's preparation for both (giving us space at the Taj, providing the full philosophical context for the Ganges burning ghats) was exceptional. The BrijRama Palace in Varanasi with its terrace over the river was genuinely one of the most atmospheric places we have ever slept.”

Varanasi completely changed my understanding of death
“That sounds dramatic but it is accurate. The burning ghats viewed from the river, with Priya's explanation of what the Hindu concept of dying in Varanasi means, was one of the most profound things I have experienced at 65. The Taj Mahal was everything the photographs promise and then some. Priya is simply outstanding — she genuinely loves India and it shows in everything she says.”

India — finally — and it was magnificent
“We have been putting off India for fifteen years because we were worried it would be overwhelming. Priya was right in the Welcome Dinner when she said: "India is not overwhelming if you have the right guide." It was exactly that — profound, beautiful and manageable. The Taj Mahal is simply incomparably beautiful in real life. Varanasi is unlike anywhere else in the world.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is Varanasi appropriate for all guests?
Varanasi confronts the reality of death in a way that is unusual for Western visitors — the burning ghats on the banks of the Ganges cremate bodies in the open air continuously. Priya prepares guests carefully and the boat trip keeps a respectful distance. Some guests find it deeply moving; others find it difficult. We offer honest information before booking and Priya adjusts the programme for any guest who is uncomfortable. The vast majority of guests describe the experience as profound rather than distressing.
How does the BrijRama Palace compare to a standard five-star hotel?
The BrijRama Palace is an 18th-century building on the ghats — it has character that a modern hotel cannot replicate. The rooms are large and well-appointed with contemporary bathrooms. The rooftop terrace and the ghats views are extraordinary. It is not the same as a modern business hotel — the building has history — and that is entirely the point.
Is Sarnath worth visiting?
Yes — Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon in the Deer Park in 528 BC, is one of the four most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. The archaeological park is peaceful and the museum contains one of the finest collections of Buddhist sculpture in India, including the original Lion Capital that became India's national emblem. It is a 30-minute drive from Varanasi and makes a meaningful afternoon visit.
Can I watch the Ganga Aarti from the ghats rather than a boat?
Yes — watching from the ghats is more immersive (you are among the Indian pilgrims and devotees rather than observing from the water) but less photogenic. Priya recommends the boat for a first visit — the full visual spectacle of the ceremony against the illuminated ghats is best seen from the river. She can arrange ghat-side positions if preferred.
What is the Banarasi silk weaver visit like?
Varanasi has been producing its distinctive heavy silk for over 2,000 years. A visit to a weaver's workshop shows the jacquard loom technique and the extraordinary time required to produce a single sari (up to six months for a complex pattern). Priya knows weaver families personally — the visit is to working homes rather than tourist showrooms. You can purchase silk directly from the weavers at fair prices.
Is this tour suitable for non-Hindu visitors?
Completely — the Varanasi experience is fascinating and moving for visitors of all faiths and none. Priya frames the Hindu sacred tradition with enormous respect and intellectual rigour. The experience is not religious instruction — it is cultural and philosophical understanding. Our guests include people of Christian, Jewish, Muslim, agnostic and atheist backgrounds, all of whom describe the Varanasi experience as extraordinary.
