About this tour

For those who want to experience Jordan properly rather than in a rush, this ten-day private journey covers the country in full — from the Roman grandeur of Jerash and the mosaic churches of Madaba, through the wild beauty of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, to three unhurried days at Petra, a night under the stars of Wadi Rum, a taste of the Red Sea at Aqaba and a restful finale on the shore of the Dead Sea. The extra days make all the difference. Three nights at Petra mean you can take the ancient city slowly: a full day to reach the Treasury and the Royal Tombs at a gentle pace, the candlelit magic of Petra by Night, and a second day with the option — entirely yours to take or leave — of the climb to the Monastery, one of Petra's most spectacular monuments. The Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan's largest nature reserve, adds a dimension most Jordan tours miss entirely: dramatic mountain scenery, rare wildlife and an eco-lodge perched on the edge of a vast valley. Wadi Rum gives you the desert at its most cinematic, explored from an open 4x4 jeep with no walking required. Aqaba, on the Red Sea, offers a complete change of pace — warm-water swimming and coral reefs at the only stretch of coast Jordan possesses. And the journey ends, as the best Jordan trips do, floating weightless on the Dead Sea at the lowest point on the surface of the earth. Omar Al-Masri leads throughout, his fourteen years of guiding and deep knowledge of the Nabataean and Roman worlds matched by an unfailing attentiveness to comfort and pace.

Omar Al-Masri leads this as his signature in-depth tour — the journey that lets him give Petra the three days it truly deserves and add the wild Dana Reserve and the Red Sea to the classic Jordan story. Fourteen years of guiding and a scholar's love of the Nabataean world inform every day.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Three full nights at Petra mean the rose-red city is explored slowly, never in a single exhausting day
  • Petra by Night — the Siq and Treasury lit by 1,500 candles — is included as an unforgettable evening
  • The Monastery climb is offered but never expected; the heart of Petra is all reached on the flat
  • Wadi Rum is explored entirely by 4x4 jeep — magnificent scenery with no walking
  • The Dana Reserve adds wild mountain landscapes and an optional gentle nature walk most Jordan tours skip
  • A Red Sea night at Aqaba and two restful nights at the Dead Sea build genuine relaxation into a culture-rich trip
  • Private throughout, with Omar adjusting the pace day by day to suit the group

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Amman

Amman

Omar meets you at Queen Alia International Airport — around five hours from the UK — and transfers you to your comfortable hotel in central Amman. After the journey, the evening is relaxed: a welcome dinner of Jordanian mezze and an early night before the days ahead.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Grand Hyatt Amman ★★★★★
Accessibility: Private air-conditioned transfer. Queen Alia airport is fully step-free with assistance available on request.
2

Jerash & Amman Citadel

Amman

A full day exploring the Roman world. North to Jerash — one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere — for Hadrian's Arch, the colonnaded Oval Plaza, the Temple of Artemis and the South Theatre with its perfect acoustics. In the afternoon, back in Amman, you visit the Citadel atop Jebel al-Qala'a, with the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace, and look down over the Roman theatre and the white city below.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4.5 kmHotel: Grand Hyatt Amman ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Amman Citadel is at its best in the late afternoon when the light turns the limestone gold and the call to prayer rises from the city below — a genuinely moving moment. There is a gentle slope up to the temple; we take it slowly, and the views reward every step.
3

Madaba, Mount Nebo & the Dana Reserve

Dana

Travelling south, you stop at Madaba to see the celebrated 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, then Mount Nebo for the sweeping view across the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea that Moses is said to have had. Continuing along the scenic King's Highway, you reach the Dana Biosphere Reserve — Jordan's largest nature reserve, a dramatic landscape of mountains and a vast valley descending towards the rift. You settle into the Dana eco-lodge perched on the cliff edge, with sunset over the reserve and a peaceful night far from any city.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Dana Guest House (RSCN) ★★★
Specialist tip: Dana is the part of Jordan that most surprises people — a wild, quiet reserve that few tours bother to include. The lodge's terrace at sunset, with the whole valley turning gold and the silence broken only by birds, is one of my favourite places in the whole country.
4

Dana to Petra

Petra

A gentle morning at Dana: an optional, easy guided nature walk along the reserve's upper trails to spot ibex, birdlife and the spring flora (entirely optional — the viewpoints by the lodge are reward enough for those who prefer to rest). Mid-morning you drive the short distance south to Petra, arriving in time to settle in beside the ancient site. In the evening, the unforgettable Petra by Night: the Siq and the Treasury lit by more than 1,500 candles, with Bedouin music drifting beneath the stars.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Mövenpick Resort Petra ★★★★★
Accessibility: The Dana nature walk is entirely optional. Petra by Night follows the same flat Siq path as the daytime visit — gentle and level, walked slowly by candlelight.
5

Petra — The Rose-Red City

Petra

A full day at Petra, beginning early in the cool morning. You walk down through the Siq — a flat 1.2km path between towering cliffs — to the Treasury, then on along the Street of Façades to the Royal Tombs and the Colonnaded Street. Omar brings the Nabataean world vividly to life: their mastery of water, trade and stone-carving. The pace is entirely yours, with plenty of shaded rest stops, and horse-drawn carriages on hand for the Siq whenever you wish.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 6 kmHotel: Mövenpick Resort Petra ★★★★★
Accessibility: The walk to the Treasury is flat, with carriages available along the Siq. The main valley floor is broadly level. No climbs are required to see Petra's defining monuments.
6

Petra — Monastery & Free Time

Petra

A second, more relaxed day at Petra. For those who wish, Omar leads the optional climb to the Monastery (Ad Deir) — over 800 rock-cut steps to one of Petra's largest and most spectacular façades, with sweeping views across the mountains (donkeys are available for the ascent for those who prefer not to walk it). For everyone else, the day is free: a return to favourite corners of the lower city, the Petra museum, or simply a restful morning by the hotel pool. The choice is entirely yours.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Mövenpick Resort Petra ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Monastery is magnificent, but it is over 800 steps and I never push anyone to do it. Those who feel up to it can take a donkey for the climb; those who would rather not have a wonderful free day in the lower city. Either way, no one feels they have missed out — that is how I plan it.
Accessibility: The Monastery climb (800+ steps) is entirely optional and can be done by donkey or skipped altogether. The rest of the day is flexible and gentle.
7

Wadi Rum Desert

Wadi Rum

A morning drive south to Wadi Rum, the great desert of red sand and soaring sandstone where Lawrence of Arabia rode. You transfer to an open 4x4 jeep for an afternoon exploring the desert — Lawrence's Spring, the red dunes, the natural rock arches and ancient rock inscriptions — timed to end with the sun setting over the sands. Dinner is a traditional Bedouin zarb feast cooked beneath the ground at your desert camp, followed by a night under one of the darkest, most star-filled skies you will ever see.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Wadi Rum Luxury Camp ★★★★
Specialist tip: In Wadi Rum the jeep does all the work — you can take in the whole desert from your seat and step onto the sand only if you wish. Wrap up warm for the evening: once the sun drops, the desert cools fast, and that is exactly when the stars come out in their thousands.
8

Wadi Rum to Aqaba & the Red Sea

Aqaba

After a final desert morning, you drive the short distance to Aqaba on the Red Sea — Jordan's only coastline and a complete change of scene. The afternoon is at leisure at your beachfront resort: warm, calm water ideal for gentle swimming, and some of the most accessible coral reefs in the world for those who enjoy snorkelling (a glass-bottomed boat is an easy alternative). Aqaba's relaxed, palm-fringed waterfront is a lovely place to unwind.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Mövenpick Resort & Residences Aqaba ★★★★★
Accessibility: The Aqaba resort has step-free pool and beach access. Snorkelling is optional; a glass-bottomed boat lets you see the reefs without entering the water.
9

Aqaba to the Dead Sea

Dead Sea

A scenic drive north along the rift valley, the road descending steadily below sea level until you reach the Dead Sea — at around 430 metres below sea level, the lowest point on the surface of the earth. You check in to your spa resort on the shore in the early afternoon, with time for a first, gentle float and the famous mineral mud before a sunset over the hills of the West Bank and a relaxed dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea ★★★★★
10

Dead Sea — Float & Departure

Dead Sea / Queen Alia Airport

A final, leisurely morning at the Dead Sea: one last effortless float, a mineral mud treatment, or simply coffee on a shaded terrace looking out over the still, silver water. Depending on your flight, Omar transfers you to Queen Alia International Airport — around an hour away — for your flight home, ten days of Jordan's ancient cities, deserts and seas carried home with you.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 0.5 km
Accessibility: The resort offers sloped, stepped and railed access to the Dead Sea shore plus freshwater pools. Floating needs no swimming ability.

Fitness & mobility

Pacing & accessibility

A thorough, comfortably paced journey covering the full sweep of Jordan with private transport throughout. Three nights at Petra allow a relaxed exploration, including Petra by Night and an optional Monastery climb. The Dana Reserve walk is gentle and optional; Wadi Rum is by jeep; the Red Sea and Dead Sea sections are pure relaxation.

Walking

1–6km per day, mostly on flat ground. The Petra Siq is a flat 1.2km (carriages available). Jerash and the Citadel have some uneven paving and gentle slopes. Wadi Rum is jeep-based. The Dana nature walk and the 800-step Monastery climb are both entirely optional.

Transport

Private air-conditioned vehicle and driver throughout. Drives are broken with regular stops; no single drive is unduly long, with the southward journey spread across several relaxed days.

Altitude

Heat / Climate

Best in March–May and September–November: warm days (22–30°C) and cool nights. We avoid June–August, when Petra and Wadi Rum reach 35–40°C. Winter is cool and can be wet, with cold nights at Petra and Dana, which sit at altitude.

Three days at Petra is exactly right

We had read that one day at Petra leaves you exhausted and having missed half of it, and the three-day pace on this tour was perfect. Petra by Night, with the Siq lit by candles, was magical, and on the second day my husband climbed to the Monastery while I had a lovely restful morning — neither of us felt short-changed. Omar's knowledge is remarkable and his care for us as a couple in our seventies was faultless. Dana was an unexpected gem.

The Red Sea was a brilliant addition

I travelled solo and the extra days made this feel like a real exploration rather than a dash. Wadi Rum from the jeep was sensational, the desert camp far more comfortable than I expected, and the night sky genuinely took my breath away. Aqaba on the Red Sea was a lovely change of pace before the Dead Sea finale. Omar made the whole thing effortless and I never once felt unsafe travelling alone.

Jordan in full, never rushed

This tour covers an extraordinary amount — Roman cities, the Dana reserve, three days at Petra, the desert, the Red Sea and the Dead Sea — yet it never felt hurried. Omar adjusted each day to how we were feeling and always made it clear which walks and climbs were optional. We are 68 and 71 and managed everything we wanted to comfortably. The float in the Dead Sea on the last morning was the perfect ending.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why spend three nights at Petra rather than one or two?

Petra is vast — far larger than most visitors expect — and trying to see it in a single day is genuinely tiring, especially for the over-60s, and means missing a great deal. Three nights let you take it slowly: a full first day to reach the Treasury, the Royal Tombs and the Colonnaded Street at a gentle pace with rest stops, the candlelit magic of Petra by Night, and a second day in which the spectacular but demanding climb to the Monastery is entirely optional. The unhurried pace is exactly what makes this tour suited to mature travellers — Petra rewards time, and three nights give it.

Is the climb to the Monastery compulsory?

Not in the least. The Monastery (Ad Deir) is one of Petra's largest and most beautiful monuments, but reaching it involves over 800 rock-cut steps, and it is entirely optional. Omar offers it on the second Petra day for those who feel up to it — and donkeys are available for the ascent for those who would rather not climb on foot. Everyone else enjoys a free day in the lower city or by the hotel pool. We plan the day so that no one who skips the climb feels they have missed the essence of Petra, because they haven't — the Treasury, the Siq and the Royal Tombs, all reached on the flat, are the heart of the site.

What is the Dana Biosphere Reserve, and is the walking difficult?

Dana is Jordan's largest nature reserve — a dramatic landscape of mountains and a vast valley descending towards the rift, home to ibex, rare birds and Mediterranean and desert flora. It is a part of Jordan most tours skip entirely, and a real highlight for those who love wild landscapes. The overnight stay is at a simple but characterful eco-lodge on the cliff edge run by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. The guided nature walk is gentle and entirely optional — and the lodge's own terrace, with its sweeping sunset views over the reserve, is reward enough for anyone who would rather not walk.

When is the best time of year to visit Jordan?

March to May and September to November are ideal: warm, comfortable days (typically 22–30°C) and pleasantly cool evenings, perfect for Petra, the desert and the Red and Dead Seas. We avoid June to August, when Petra and Wadi Rum regularly reach 35–40°C — too hot for comfortable sightseeing and demanding for the over-60s. Winter (December to February) can be cold and wet, and Petra and Dana, which sit at altitude, can be genuinely chilly. All our departures fall squarely within the best spring and autumn windows.

Do I need a visa, and is the Jordan Pass included?

UK citizens need a visa for Jordan, and we include the Jordan Pass, which is the simplest option. The Jordan Pass bundles the tourist visa fee with entrance to Petra and many other sites; it waives the visa cost for stays of at least three nights (which this ten-day tour comfortably exceeds) and saves queueing on arrival. We arrange the Jordan Pass for you and explain everything in your pre-departure pack. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

How comfortable is the Wadi Rum desert camp?

More comfortable than most people imagine. The camp has en-suite tented chalets with proper beds and private bathrooms — some with transparent panels so you can stargaze from bed — and a central tent where the traditional Bedouin zarb feast is served. It is a genuine desert experience, with the silence and the extraordinary star-filled sky, but without the discomfort of true camping. The one essential is a warm layer: desert nights cool sharply once the sun sets, even in spring and autumn, which is precisely when the stars are at their most spectacular.
