About this tour

Jordan packs an extraordinary amount of the world's most dramatic history and landscape into a country smaller than Scotland — and does so with a warmth of welcome that consistently surprises first-time visitors. In eight unhurried days you stand at the end of the Siq as the Treasury reveals itself, sleep beneath the desert stars of Wadi Rum, walk the colonnaded streets of a Roman city the equal of anything in Italy, and float weightless on the surface of the lowest point on the surface of the earth. This private journey begins in Amman, the easy-going modern capital, with day trips to the spectacular Roman ruins of Jerash — among the best-preserved provincial Roman cities anywhere in the world — and to Madaba and Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have looked out over the Promised Land and where the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land is laid out in mosaic on a church floor. Then south to Petra, the Nabataean capital carved from rose-coloured sandstone, where two full days allow you to absorb its scale at a gentle pace, with the climbs to its higher monuments left entirely as a matter of choice. A night in a comfortable desert camp in Wadi Rum — the valley of T.E. Lawrence and a hundred film locations — gives you the Martian-red sands explored by 4x4 jeep, a Bedouin feast cooked beneath the ground, and a night sky undimmed by any city light. The journey ends on the shore of the Dead Sea, 430 metres below sea level, where two nights at a spa resort allow time simply to float, to be coated in mineral-rich mud, and to do nothing very much at all. Omar Al-Masri, Amman-born and an authority on both the Nabataean and Roman worlds, brings every stone to life — and looks after the practical comfort of every guest as though they were family.

Omar Al-Masri was born in Amman and has guided Jordan for fourteen years. His deep knowledge of Nabataean and Roman history turns Petra and Jerash from impressive ruins into living stories — and his attentive, unhurried manner puts every guest at ease.

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Amman

Amman

Omar meets you at Queen Alia International Airport — around five hours' flight from the UK — and transfers you to your hotel in the leafy embassy district of Amman. The drive in introduces you to the white limestone city spread over its seven hills. The remainder of the day is yours to recover from the journey, with a relaxed welcome dinner of mezze — hummus, mutabal, vine leaves, freshly baked flatbread — at a favourite local restaurant.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Grand Hyatt Amman ★★★★★
Accessibility: Transfer is in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Queen Alia airport is modern with full step-free access and assistance available on request — let us know in advance and we arrange it.
2

Jerash — Roman Splendour

Amman

A full-day excursion north to Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. You enter through Hadrian's Arch and walk the great Oval Plaza ringed by its colonnade, the cardo maximus still grooved by chariot wheels, the soaring Temple of Artemis and a Roman theatre with acoustics so perfect a coin dropped at the centre can be heard from the back row. Omar reads the city as a living place — where people shopped, worshipped and watched the games. Return to Amman in the late afternoon, with a short orientation drive past the Citadel and the Roman theatre in the city centre.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Grand Hyatt Amman ★★★★★
Specialist tip: At Jerash I always carry a single coin to drop in the centre of the South Theatre — the Roman acoustic engineering still works perfectly two thousand years on, and the look on guests' faces never gets old. Comfortable shoes matter here; the original stone paving is uneven in places.
3

Madaba & Mount Nebo — South to Petra

Petra

Heading south, you stop at Madaba to see the famous 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land laid into the floor of St George's Church — the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of the region. A short drive on, Mount Nebo offers the view that Moses is said to have had over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and, on a clear day, the hills of Jerusalem. You then continue along the scenic King's Highway towards Petra, arriving at your hotel beside the entrance to the ancient site in the late afternoon — settled and ready for tomorrow.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Mövenpick Resort Petra ★★★★★
Accessibility: Both Madaba's church and the Mount Nebo viewpoint are essentially flat with short, level approaches. The day is mostly comfortable driving with regular stops.
4

Petra — The Rose-Red City

Petra

A full day at Petra, beginning early before the heat and the crowds. You walk down through the Siq — a flat 1.2km path winding between sandstone cliffs 200 metres high — until the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) reveals itself in the famous sliver of view. Omar explains the genius of the Nabataeans, who controlled the incense and spice trade and channelled water across the desert to build a city of 30,000 in this hidden valley. You continue along the Street of Façades and the Colonnaded Street at your own pace. The optional climbs to the Monastery (Ad Deir, 800+ steps) and the High Place of Sacrifice are left entirely to you — and easily skipped without missing the heart of the site.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 6 kmHotel: Mövenpick Resort Petra ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Siq is loveliest before 8am, when the morning light slides down the cliffs and the Treasury first catches the sun. We always start early. Horse-drawn carriages run the length of the Siq if anyone would rather ride than walk — I arrange them on the spot, no fuss.
Accessibility: The walk to the Treasury is flat. Horse-drawn carriages cover the Siq (included for those who wish), and the main valley floor is broadly level. The Monastery and High Place climbs are entirely optional — most of Petra's grandeur is reached on the flat.
5

Petra at Leisure — Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum

A gentle morning: either a return visit to Petra for those who want more time among the tombs, or a relaxed start by the pool. Around midday you drive south to Wadi Rum, the great desert valley of red sand and towering sandstone massifs where Lawrence of Arabia rode and where countless films have been shot. You transfer to an open 4x4 jeep for a sunset desert drive — past Lawrence's Spring, the red dunes and the natural rock arches — before arriving at your desert camp for a Bedouin feast cooked in a zarb (an underground sand oven) and a night beneath a sky thick with stars.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Wadi Rum Luxury Camp ★★★★
Specialist tip: Wadi Rum is all done from the jeep — you can see the whole sweep of the desert without taking more than a few steps onto the sand if you don't wish to. The night sky is the real surprise: with no light pollution at all, the Milky Way is astonishing. Bring a warm layer — desert nights drop sharply even in spring and autumn.
6

Wadi Rum to the Dead Sea

Dead Sea

A final morning in the desert — perhaps a short jeep run to a viewpoint to watch the early light change the colour of the sands — before breakfast and the drive north along the Dead Sea Highway. The descent is remarkable: the road drops below sea level, signs marking the depth, until you reach the lowest point on the surface of the earth at around 430 metres below sea level. Check in to your spa resort on the shore in the early afternoon, with time for a first, gentle float before sunset over the hills of the West Bank.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea ★★★★★
7

Dead Sea — Float, Mud & Rest

Dead Sea

A full day at leisure to enjoy the extraordinary buoyancy of the Dead Sea — so salt-dense (around ten times saltier than the ocean) that you cannot sink, floating effortlessly on your back to read a newspaper if you wish. The famous black mineral mud, scooped from the shore, is a natural skin treatment. The resort's spa, freshwater pools and shaded terraces invite a thoroughly indulgent day of doing very little. Omar is on hand for anyone who would like an optional half-day excursion to the Baptism Site (Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan) on the River Jordan.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea ★★★★★
Accessibility: The resort has gently sloped, stepped and railed access points to the Dead Sea shore, plus freshwater pools. Floating requires no swimming ability — the water holds you up. Avoid getting the highly saline water in your eyes; a rinse shower is always close by.
8

Departure

Queen Alia Airport

A relaxed final breakfast and, depending on your flight time, perhaps a last float before Omar transfers you to Queen Alia International Airport — around an hour from the Dead Sea — for your flight home to the UK.

Petra at dawn is a moment we will never forget

We are both in our late sixties and were a little anxious about the walking, but it was entirely manageable. Omar started us through the Siq early and the moment the Treasury appeared in that famous sliver of light, Anne was in tears. He arranged a carriage for the return without a fuss. Wadi Rum by jeep was magnificent and the desert camp under the stars was a highlight neither of us expected. Jordan exceeded every expectation.

Solo at 71 and looked after beautifully

I travelled alone and never once felt anything other than safe and welcome — Jordanians are extraordinarily warm. Omar's knowledge of Petra and Jerash was on another level, and he was endlessly patient with my pace. I skipped the Monastery climb entirely, as he suggested I could, and still felt I had seen the heart of Petra. Floating in the Dead Sea at the end, with a glass of mint tea, was the perfect finish.

Four completely different experiences in one week

Roman ruins at Jerash, the rose-red city of Petra, a night in the desert, and floating in the Dead Sea — the variety in eight days was remarkable and never rushed. The Mövenpick literally next to Petra meant no early bus, just a short stroll to the gate. Omar managed everything seamlessly. We have already recommended this trip to three couples at our golf club.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How much walking is involved at Petra, and can I manage it?

The essential experience — the walk down the Siq to the Treasury — is a flat path of about 1.2km, gently downhill on the way in and gently uphill on the way back. Horse-drawn carriages run the length of the Siq and are included for anyone who would prefer to ride. Beyond the Treasury, the main valley floor with the Street of Façades, the Royal Tombs and the Colonnaded Street is broadly level. The famous climbs — the Monastery (over 800 steps) and the High Place of Sacrifice — are entirely optional, and Omar will always tell you so. The great majority of Petra's grandeur is reached on the flat. Many of our over-60s guests skip the climbs altogether and feel they have seen everything that matters.

When is the best time of year to visit Jordan?

March to May and September to November are ideal: warm, comfortable days (typically 22–30°C) with pleasantly cool evenings, perfect for exploring Petra and the desert. We deliberately avoid June to August, when Petra and Wadi Rum regularly reach 35–40°C — uncomfortable for sightseeing and especially demanding for the over-60s. Winter (December to February) can be genuinely cold and wet, particularly at Petra, which sits at altitude and can even see occasional snow. Our departures are scheduled squarely within the best spring and autumn windows.

Do I need a visa for Jordan, and what is the Jordan Pass?

UK citizens need a visa for Jordan, but the simplest route is the Jordan Pass, which we include in this tour. The Jordan Pass bundles the tourist visa fee together with entrance to Petra and many other sites — it both waives the visa cost (provided you stay at least three nights, which this tour comfortably exceeds) and saves you queueing. Alternatively a visa on arrival is available. We handle the Jordan Pass arrangements for you and explain everything in your pre-departure pack. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Is Wadi Rum physically demanding?

Not at all. The desert is explored from an open 4x4 jeep, which takes you to the dunes, rock arches, springs and viewpoints — you can experience the full sweep of Wadi Rum with no more than a few steps onto the sand if you prefer. The overnight camp has proper beds, en-suite bathrooms and a central dining tent, so it is comfortable rather than rough. The one thing to pack is a warm layer: even in spring and autumn, desert nights cool sharply once the sun goes down, which makes the brilliant star-filled sky all the more magical.

What is floating in the Dead Sea actually like?

It is genuinely effortless and one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. The water is around ten times saltier than the ocean, so dense that you simply cannot sink — you float on your back without any effort, often laughing at how strange it feels. You do not need to be able to swim. The black mineral mud from the shore is a natural skin treatment that guests love. A few sensible tips, which the resort and Omar will remind you of: don't shave beforehand, keep the water out of your eyes and mouth, and don't stay in too long. Rinse showers are always close by, and the resort's freshwater pools are there too.

Is Jordan safe to visit?

Jordan is one of the safest and most stable countries in the Middle East and a long-established, welcoming destination for British travellers. Crime against tourists is very rare, and Jordanians have a deserved reputation for warmth and hospitality. The main tourist regions — Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea — are calm and well set up for visitors. We monitor Foreign Office guidance continuously and our routing stays well within the established tourist corridors. As always, we recommend comprehensive travel insurance including medical cover.
