About this tour

South Korea has, until recently, been the quieter member of East Asia's great triumvirate — overshadowed by Japan and China in the imaginations of British travellers. That oversight is one of the most rewarding to correct. In a single comfortable week, this private tour gives you the heart of it: Seoul, one of the world's most dynamic capitals, where five-hundred-year-old royal palaces sit in the shadow of glass towers and the hanok lanes of Bukchon climb the hillside exactly as they did in the Joseon dynasty; and Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla kingdom, a green and gentle valley so dense with temples, tombs and pavilions that UNESCO has called it a museum without walls. This is the shorter, gentler introduction to Korea — designed for those who want the essential experience without the longer cross-country journeys. Four nights in Seoul allow the city to unfold slowly: the throne hall and pavilions of Gyeongbokgung, the wooden gates and Secret Garden of Changdeokgung, the antique shops and tea houses of Insadong, and the brilliant lights of Myeongdong after dark. Your guide, Soo-Yeon Kim — born in Seoul and a scholar of Korean history and royal court culture — paces every day to your comfort, building in rest stops at tea houses and timing the palaces to avoid the crowds. Then the bullet train south. The KTX glides from Seoul to Gyeongju in barely two hours, and the change of register is profound: from the energy of the capital to the soft, temple-strewn calm of the Silla heartland. Bulguksa Temple, the grass-covered royal tombs of the Tumuli Park, the lotus pond and reflected pavilions of Anapji at dusk — Gyeongju is where Korea's deepest history lives, and where this week finds its quiet centre before a final night back in Seoul.

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Seoul

Seoul

Soo-Yeon meets you at Incheon International Airport — around eleven hours' flight from London — and transfers you by private car into the heart of Seoul, to the Josun Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel in the Gangnam district. After the long flight, the rest of the day is yours: a rest, an unhurried walk near the hotel, or simply a first Korean meal in the hotel's restaurant. In the early evening, if you are inclined, Soo-Yeon joins you for a gentle welcome dinner of bulgogi and an array of banchan side dishes at a refined restaurant nearby, with an early night to follow.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Josun Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel ★★★★★
Accessibility: Private transfer from Incheon by car. The hotel is fully step-free with lift access throughout. The optional evening stroll is on flat, paved city pavements.
2

Royal Seoul — Gyeongbokgung & Bukchon Hanok Village

Seoul

A full but unhurried day in the historic heart of Seoul. The morning belongs to Gyeongbokgung, the grandest of the city's five royal palaces — the throne hall of Geunjeongjeon, the floating Gyeonghoeru banquet pavilion on its lotus pond, and the changing of the royal guard ceremony at the great Gwanghwamun gate, performed in full Joseon-dynasty costume. After a Korean lunch, a gentle stroll through Bukchon Hanok Village, the hillside neighbourhood of traditional tile-roofed hanok houses where aristocratic families once lived, with views down over the curving rooftops to the palace and the city beyond.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Josun Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel ★★★★★
Specialist tip: I always time our arrival at Gyeongbokgung for the 10:00 changing of the guard, then take guests into the palace just as the ceremony crowds disperse — so the courtyards are at their quietest and most beautiful. The light on the Gyeonghoeru pavilion in the late morning is the photograph everyone wants.
Accessibility: Gyeongbokgung's grounds are broad, flat and gravelled, with seated rest pavilions throughout. Bukchon involves a gentle hillside incline on paved lanes — we take it slowly and there is a level lower route for anyone who prefers to avoid the steeper sections.
3

Changdeokgung, the Secret Garden & Insadong

Seoul

This morning, the loveliest of Seoul's palaces: Changdeokgung, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prized above the others for the way its halls and gates follow the natural contours of the land rather than imposing upon them. Behind the palace lies the Huwon, the Secret Garden — the private royal retreat of pavilions, lotus ponds and ancient trees, entered only on a timed guided walk that Soo-Yeon arranges in advance. After lunch, the antique shops, calligraphy studios, paper galleries and traditional tea houses of Insadong, where you can pause over a cup of citron tea and watch the artists at work.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Josun Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Secret Garden is the one part of the trip with timed entry, so I book our slot well ahead. It involves a gentle wooded walk over about ninety minutes — but there are benches throughout, and I always carry the timing loosely so we can stop whenever anyone wishes. It is, quite simply, the most serene place in Seoul.
Accessibility: Changdeokgung's main grounds are flat and accessible. The Secret Garden has gentle wooded paths with some uneven ground and slopes; a shorter level alternative is available, and benches are frequent. Insadong's main street is flat and pedestrianised.
4

Optional DMZ Half-Day & Myeongdong

Seoul

A morning with a choice. For those who wish, Soo-Yeon accompanies you on an optional half-day excursion to the Demilitarised Zone at the edge of the city — the tense, strangely moving border with North Korea, taking in the Imjingak peace park and an observatory looking across the frontier. For those who prefer a gentler morning, the time is free to rest, revisit a favourite corner or enjoy the hotel spa. The afternoon brings the bright energy of Myeongdong, Seoul's famous shopping and street-food quarter, where the evening lights come on and the food stalls fill the lanes.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Josun Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The DMZ is one of the most thought-provoking half-days in Korea, but it is entirely optional and I never press it. Those who go are almost always glad they did — it brings the country's recent history vividly close. Those who stay behind enjoy a restful morning, and we all meet again for Myeongdong in the afternoon.
Accessibility: The optional DMZ excursion is by comfortable coach with short, level walks at each stop; it is largely accessible, though please discuss specific needs in advance. Myeongdong's streets are flat and paved but can be busy in the evening — we walk at an easy pace.
5

The KTX Bullet Train to Gyeongju

Seoul to Gyeongju

A relaxed morning before Soo-Yeon transfers you to Seoul Station for the KTX, Korea's high-speed bullet train, which glides south at over 300km/h to reach the Gyeongju region in barely two hours — comfortable, quiet and entirely seated. On arrival, a private transfer to the Lahan Select Gyeongju, beautifully set beside Bomun Lake. The afternoon is gentle: a first easy walk by the lakeside or simply time to settle in before this evening's quiet introduction to the old Silla capital.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Lahan Select Gyeongju ★★★★★
Specialist tip: I always reserve our KTX seats together on the left-hand side facing forward, where the countryside views are best as the train leaves the city behind. There is a trolley service and ample legroom — most guests are surprised how quickly and comfortably the journey passes.
Accessibility: Seoul Station and the KTX have full lift and level-boarding access, with assistance available on request. The Lahan Select Gyeongju is fully accessible, and the lakeside path is flat and paved.
6

Gyeongju — Bulguksa, the Royal Tumuli & Anapji Pond

Gyeongju

A full day among the treasures of the Silla kingdom, all at an unhurried pace. The morning is given to Bulguksa Temple, the masterpiece of Korean Buddhist architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — its stone terraces, twin pagodas and serene halls set against wooded hills. After a Korean lunch, the grass-covered royal tombs of Gyeongju, the great green mounds of the Daereungwon Tumuli Park, where you can step inside one excavated tomb to see the golden crown and treasures of a Silla king. The day ends, perfectly, at Anapji (Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond) at dusk, when the reconstructed pavilions and their reflections glow on the still water — one of the loveliest sights in all of Korea.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Lahan Select Gyeongju ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Anapji is magical at the moment of dusk when the pavilion lights come on and double in the water — so I time our whole day to finish here just before sunset. We bring the temple and tombs forward in the morning and early afternoon so we are never rushing for the light.
Accessibility: Bulguksa Temple has some stone steps at its terraces, but a gentler accessible route reaches the main courtyards, and Soo-Yeon adapts the visit. The Tumuli Park and Anapji are flat parkland with broad, level paths and frequent benches.

Return to Seoul & a Final Night

Gyeongju to Seoul

A leisurely final morning in Gyeongju — perhaps a last walk by Bomun Lake — before the KTX carries you back to Seoul in the early afternoon, comfortable and seated as before. On arrival, Soo-Yeon transfers you to your hotel for a final night in the capital. The evening is yours: a last Korean dinner, a return to a favourite Insadong tea house, or simply an early rest before tomorrow's journey home.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Josun Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel ★★★★★
Accessibility: The KTX return and all transfers are step-free with assistance available. The final night is at the fully accessible Josun Palace, allowing a calm end to the week.

Who will plan your holiday

Soo-Yeon Kim

Born and raised in Seoul, Soo-Yeon has guided visitors through Korea for fourteen years. She read Korean history at Seoul National University, with a particular love of the Joseon royal court and the Silla kingdom of Gyeongju, and she brings genuine scholarship together with a calm, attentive warmth that immediately puts guests at ease. She knows which courtyard at Gyeongbokgung is quietest at mid-morning, which tea house in Insadong serves the finest citron tea, and exactly when the light falls best on the pavilions at Anapji. Endlessly patient, she walks at whatever pace her guests need and builds rest into every day as a matter of course.

Korea surprised us at every turn — and the pace was perfect

We had done Japan a few years ago and assumed Korea would be similar. It was wonderfully different — the palaces in Seoul are magnificent, and Gyeongju was a revelation neither of us expected. Soo-Yeon was simply outstanding: knowledgeable, gentle, and always aware of how we were doing. We are both nearing seventy and never once felt hurried. The bullet train was a joy, and Anapji at dusk brought a tear to my eye.

Travelling solo at 71 — effortless and utterly memorable

I chose this trip because a week felt manageable and Korea intrigued me. It exceeded every hope. Soo-Yeon took such care of me that I never felt alone, and the cherry blossom in Gyeongju was beyond anything I had imagined. The Secret Garden at Changdeokgung was the most peaceful place I have ever walked. The hotels were beautiful and the food a constant delight. I would recommend it to any older traveller without hesitation.

A gentle, civilised week — exactly what we wanted

After some more strenuous holidays, we wanted something rich but unhurried, and this was perfect. Just the one hotel change, a wonderful bullet train ride, and days that always allowed for an afternoon rest. Bulguksa Temple and the royal tombs at Gyeongju were the highlights for us. Soo-Yeon's knowledge of the history brought everything to life. We came home relaxed rather than exhausted, which at our age is no small thing.

Before you go

Practical information

Visa requirements

No visa required for UK citizens for stays up to 90 days. A K-ETA travel authorisation is normally required (applied for online before departure), though this has periodically been waived for UK passport holders — we confirm the current position for your departure. Passport valid for 6+ months required.

Currency

South Korean Won (₩). Cards are accepted virtually everywhere and ATMs are widespread; UK bank cards work well. We advise carrying a little cash for markets and small tea houses.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary or expected in Korea — restaurants and taxis do not anticipate it, and there is no service-charge culture. A gratuity for your guide is appreciated for exceptional service (approximately ₩30,000 per day is a generous guide). There is no tipping pressure anywhere.

Electricity

220V, European-style two-pin (Type C/F) plugs. UK travellers will need a travel adapter, which we remind you to pack in our pre-departure advice.

Health & vaccinations

South Korea has world-class hospitals and clinics, with excellent English-speaking private facilities in Seoul. Pharmacies are widespread. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended.

Flights

Fly to Incheon International Airport (ICN), approximately 11 hours direct from London with Korean Air or Asiana. We can arrange flights from your local UK airport or via connections through European, Gulf or Asian hubs.

Local transport

Private air-conditioned vehicle with guide for all transfers and excursions. The KTX high-speed bullet train links Seoul and Gyeongju in around two hours each way, in reserved, comfortable seats. Seoul's metro is excellent but we use private transport for ease and comfort throughout.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa or K-ETA to visit South Korea?

British citizens do not need a visa for tourist visits to South Korea of up to 90 days. You will normally need a K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorisation), a simple online travel authorisation applied for before departure, though Korea has periodically waived the K-ETA requirement for UK passport holders — we confirm the current position for your departure and guide you through any application required. A passport with at least six months' validity beyond your travel dates is required.

When is the best time of year to visit Korea?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) are by far the loveliest seasons, and all our departures fall within them. Spring brings cherry blossom and mild, bright days; autumn brings crisp air, golden foliage and clear skies — ideal for the palaces and Gyeongju. We deliberately avoid the humid heat of July and August and the deep cold of midwinter, so that every departure enjoys the gentlest, most comfortable weather Korea has to offer.

Is this tour suitable for travellers with limited mobility?

Largely, yes. Seoul's palace grounds, the Tumuli Park, Anapji and both hotels are flat and step-free or fully accessible, and the KTX bullet train has level boarding with assistance on request. The two places with some steps or slopes — the Bukchon hillside and Bulguksa Temple's terraces — both have gentler accessible alternative routes, and Soo-Yeon adapts each visit to suit her guests. There is just one hotel change in the week. Please discuss your specific needs with us and we will tailor the itinerary accordingly.

What is Korean food like, and will it suit me if I am not adventurous?

Korean cuisine is warming, varied and famously healthy — built around rice, grilled meats, vegetables and the countless little banchan side dishes that accompany every meal. Beloved dishes such as bulgogi (marinated grilled beef), bibimbap (rice with vegetables and egg) and Korean barbecue are gentle, comforting and very accessible. Some dishes are spiced, but a great many are mild, and Soo-Yeon guides every meal — briefing restaurants on dietary needs in advance and recommending dishes to suit each guest. Western options are also always available.

Is South Korea a safe country to travel in?

South Korea is one of the safest countries in Asia, and indeed the world, for international visitors. Crime against tourists is very rare, the infrastructure — healthcare, transport, communications — is excellent, and the people are notably courteous and helpful. Soo-Yeon is with you or on call throughout and handles all logistics. We monitor FCDO guidance continuously. As always, comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended.
