About this tour

Seven days in Sri Lanka — enough to capture the island's three most beloved faces: the archaeological wonder of the Cultural Triangle, the sacred city-on-a-lake that is Kandy, and the perfectly preserved Dutch colonial elegance of Galle Fort. This is Sri Lanka distilled to its very essence, designed for travellers who want maximum reward in minimum time. Your small group of no more than twelve travels with David Pryce — a Welshman who arrived in Sri Lanka for three months in 2017 and has been there ever since, now leading groups across the island's highlights with the comfortable authority of someone for whom every road is familiar. David's style is relaxed and conversational; he briefs the group over dinner each evening, answers every question with genuine knowledge and has an unerring instinct for the restaurant, the viewpoint and the quiet temple corner that other guides miss. The itinerary is lean by design: no filler, no padding. From Colombo you drive straight to Sigiriya for two nights in the Cultural Triangle — time enough for both the Dambulla cave temples and the rock fortress. From there, two nights in Kandy for the botanical gardens, the Temple of the Tooth and a morning at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The final two nights are given entirely to Galle — the most enchanting fort city in Asia, and one of the best places in Sri Lanka simply to wander without an agenda. It is a tour that many guests use as a first encounter with Sri Lanka before returning for one of our longer, deeper journeys. But it is also complete in itself — those seven days contain more beauty, more history and more joy than most destinations manage in twice the time.

David Pryce arrived in Sri Lanka in 2017 and never left. The former secondary school teacher from Bridgend brings an educator's clarity and warmth to every group he leads, making complex history feel accessible and every site feel personal.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Small group of maximum 12 means proper attention from David and no waiting around
  • Tuk-tuk sightseeing at archaeological sites avoids excessive walking in the heat
  • Three base hotels — no packing and unpacking every night
  • Activities concentrated in the cool morning hours; afternoons free to rest or explore
  • Galle Fort is entirely flat and ideal for gentle independent exploration
  • Seven-day duration is ideal for those who find longer tours exhausting

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival & Drive to Sigiriya

Sigiriya

The group assembles at Colombo airport and travels together in a comfortable coach directly to the Cultural Triangle — a three-and-a-half hour drive through the island's coconut groves and paddy flatlands. Check in to the Water Garden Sigiriya in time for a late lunch by the pool, with the rock fortress visible above the tree canopy. A gentle introductory briefing over dinner sets up the days ahead.

Meals: Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Water Garden Sigiriya ★★★★★
2

Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Dambulla

Sigiriya / Dambulla

An early 7am start for Sigiriya while the morning is cool — the ancient water gardens, the magnificent frescoes and (for those who wish) the full ascent to the summit. Return to the hotel for a pool lunch, then the 30-minute drive to Dambulla Cave Temples for a late afternoon visit when the pilgrimage crowds have thinned and the cave interiors are most atmospheric. David's briefing on the Buddhist cosmology depicted in the murals transforms the experience from sightseeing to genuine understanding.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 5 kmHotel: Water Garden Sigiriya ★★★★★
Specialist tip: I always do Sigiriya early and Dambulla late — the reverse of what most tours do. The cave temples at 4pm, when the pilgrims light their incense and the light streams golden through the cave mouths, are extraordinary.
3

Drive to Kandy — Pinnawala

Kandy

The drive south to Kandy breaks for the 10am elephant bathing at Pinnawala Orphanage — one of those experiences that tends to put the whole group in the best possible mood for the rest of the day. Continue to Kandy, checking into the Amaya Hills in time for lunch and an afternoon exploring the lakeside independently before a group dinner in a traditional Kandyan restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Amaya Hills, Kandy ★★★★★
4

Kandy: Gardens, Temple & Puja

Kandy

Kandy at full stretch. Morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — the 4,000-species collection spread across 147 acres is genuinely staggering and the orchid house alone is worth the journey. Afternoon for the Temple of the Tooth, which David has visited well over a hundred times and still finds moving. The 6:30pm puja ceremony, with its ceremonial drummers and robed monks, closes the day on the highest possible note.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Amaya Hills, Kandy ★★★★★
Specialist tip: For the puja, I position the group behind the offering platform rather than the main viewing queue — you see the monks approaching from the inner shrine, which is the most impressive angle and usually less crowded.
5

Drive to Galle

Galle

The drive south from the cool hill country descends through rubber plantations and then coconut groves as the coast approaches and the air warms and sweetens. Check in to the Fort Printers within Galle Fort — a converted 18th-century Dutch printing house with just fourteen rooms, all facing inward to a colonial garden. An afternoon stroll along the fort ramparts with David, who knows every crenellation and can identify every ship on the horizon.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Fort Printers, Galle Fort ★★★★★
6

Galle Fort — Free Exploration

Galle

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most pleasant places in Asia simply to wander with no particular agenda. The Dutch Reformed Church, the old police station (now a museum), the cricket ground where international matches are played within earshot of the ramparts — all are within walking distance of the hotel. A morning tour with David covers the highlights; the afternoon is entirely yours. The group gathers for a final dinner in the fort's finest restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Fort Printers, Galle Fort ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Pedlar Street area of the fort has the best independent boutiques — seek out Barefoot Galle (best fabric and book shop in Sri Lanka) and Sun and Moon (beautiful jewellery by a local designer). Both are on streets David knows well.
7

Coastal Drive — Return to Colombo

Colombo

A final drive north along the coast road — past turtle hatcheries, fishing villages and the old Dutch canal system — to Colombo airport. David accompanies the group to the airport and sees everyone through check-in. Departing with a week of images that will take some time to fully process, and almost certainly a desire to return.

David Pryce

David arrived from Bridgend on a three-month sabbatical in 2017 and discovered he had finally found his place. A former secondary school history teacher, he brings an educator's gift for making complex history engaging and accessible. He has lived in Colombo and Kandy at different times and knows the island with the intimacy of a local resident. His group management style is warm and unhurried; he has a particular talent for finding the quiet corner, the hidden viewpoint and the best masala dosa in any given town.

Perfect first visit to Sri Lanka

Seven days felt like the perfect length for a first visit. David was brilliant — incredibly knowledgeable and very funny. Sigiriya was more dramatic than anything we'd imagined. The Fort Printers hotel in Galle was simply stunning. We're already planning to come back for the longer 12-day tour to see what we missed. Brilliant value for the quality of hotels and guiding.

Solo traveller — never felt alone for a second

Travelling solo at 71 and this was my first group tour. I couldn't have chosen better. The group was lovely — mixed ages, all over 60, all curious and good-humoured. David looked after everyone individually while keeping the group moving smoothly. The elephant bathing at Pinnawala made me cry with delight. Sri Lanka is magical.

Punches well above its price point

We expected something decent and got something exceptional. The Water Garden hotel at Sigiriya was unlike anything we've ever stayed in. David managed the group with great skill — never hurried, always informative, always cheerful. Galle Fort was the unexpected highlight for both of us. We'd recommend this to anyone thinking about Sri Lanka for the first time.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many people will be in my group?

Our maximum group size is 12. In practice, most departures run with 8–10 guests. We cap groups at 12 deliberately — larger than this and the personal attention that defines our tours becomes impossible to maintain. You will know everyone in your group within 24 hours and there is a strong social dimension to these tours that many guests mention as an unexpected pleasure.

Can I extend this tour before or after?

Yes, and we encourage it. The most popular extensions are: a Colombo arrival night (one extra night at the Shangri-La before the tour begins, giving you time to recover from the flight), a beach extension at Bentota (three nights of coastal relaxation after the tour ends), and a Yala National Park safari (two nights in the national park for wildlife enthusiasts). All can be added at the time of booking — see our add-ons section above.

What happens if I can't manage the Sigiriya ascent?

The Sigiriya ascent is entirely optional. The ancient water gardens at the base of the rock and the frescoes at the halfway point are both outstanding experiences that require far less climbing. David assesses the group's preferences and abilities the evening before and plans accordingly — nobody is pressured to ascend further than they wish. Some guests find they surprise themselves; others are entirely content at the base with a spectacular view. Both are valid.

Is this suitable if I'm travelling solo?

Very much so. Solo travellers make up roughly a third of our small-group tours and consistently rate the social dimension of travelling with compatible fellow guests as one of the highlights of the experience. David is skilled at ensuring everyone feels included. A single supplement applies (see above) though we waive this on several departures each year — contact us to check current availability.

What is the food like in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lankan food is wonderful and considerably lighter than Indian cuisine, with the emphasis on fresh seafood, coconut milk curries, fresh tropical fruits and hoppers (bowl-shaped rice flour pancakes eaten with egg and sambal). All our featured restaurants are selected for quality and consistency; we know which dishes to recommend at each one. Dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free are very well catered for in Sri Lanka. Please note any requirements when booking.

How do I get to the group departure point?

All guests meet at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) on the morning of Day 1. We provide clear briefing notes on arrival procedures and David will be at the meeting point with a group board. If you are arriving on different flights, we stagger transfers so no one waits longer than necessary. If you are arriving the previous day and staying at a Colombo hotel, we arrange your transfer to the airport meeting point on Day 1 morning.
