About this tour

Some journeys try to do too much; this one is shaped instead around a single, satisfying arc. You begin in Sri Lanka — the compact, generous island where ancient cities, sacred temples, tea-scented highlands and leopard country sit within a few hours of one another. You move on to Thailand, where Bangkok's gilded temples and the slow brown sweep of the Chao Phraya river offer a complete change of culture and rhythm. And you finish in the Maldives, on a single, beautiful island where the only decision left to make is beach villa or overwater, and the only sound is the lagoon. This is a culture-and-beach grand tour designed for the way mature travellers actually like to travel: rich in genuine highlights, but never a forced march. In Sri Lanka you climb Sigiriya (or take the gentler Pidurangala path, or simply enjoy the water gardens below), explore the cave temples of Dambulla, attend the evening puja at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth, ride the famous blue train into the tea country, and spend a morning watching elephants on a private jeep safari. In Bangkok you stand beneath the Emerald Buddha at the Grand Palace and glide past riverside temples by private long-tail boat. And then everything slows: a short flight south to the Maldives and four nights with nothing asked of you at all. Throughout, the logistics are entirely ours. Private air-conditioned vehicles and drivers in Sri Lanka and Thailand, internal flights with airport assistance, a dedicated specialist guide on the cultural legs, and step-free comfort wherever it can be arranged. You carry nothing, queue for nothing and decide nothing more taxing than what to order for dinner. For travellers who have always wanted to see Asia's temples and also long to end on a tropical beach — and who refuse to choose between the two — this is the journey.

Isabella Chen leads the Sri Lanka leg and oversees the whole journey, handing you to our trusted Bangkok specialist for Thailand before your restful Maldivian finale. She has spent a decade pairing Sri Lanka's culture with the Indian Ocean's finest beaches.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Three countries in one seamless booking — private transfers, internal flights and airport assistance throughout, so you never carry luggage or navigate a queue
  • Honest accessibility notes on every day, with a gentler alternative offered wherever a site involves a steep climb (Sigiriya, in particular)
  • A genuine rest day built into the Sri Lanka leg and four wholly restful nights to finish in the Maldives
  • The blue train into the tea country is booked in a reserved first-class observation carriage — one of Asia's great railway journeys, done in comfort
  • Wildlife is viewed from a seated, elevated open jeep — no walking safaris
  • A varied itinerary that still moves at a humane pace: active mornings are always followed by gentle afternoons

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrive Colombo — Transfer to Negombo

Negombo

Isabella meets you at Colombo airport and transfers you the short distance north to Negombo, a relaxed coastal town close to the airport — far gentler than arriving into the city after a long flight. Settle in at Jetwing Beach, dip your toes in the Indian Ocean and enjoy a first Sri Lankan dinner on the beachfront.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Jetwing Beach, Negombo ★★★★
Specialist tip: Negombo rather than Colombo for the first night is a deliberate choice. After eleven hours in the air, a ten-minute transfer to a beachfront hotel beats an hour into the city traffic. Sleep, swim, and let Sri Lanka begin gently.
Accessibility: Step-free arrival transfer in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Jetwing Beach has lifts and ground-floor rooms available on request.
2

Negombo — Drive to Sigiriya

Sigiriya

A scenic morning drive inland to the cultural triangle, with stops broken at least every ninety minutes. Arrive at Aliya Resort & Spa near Sigiriya in time for lunch and an afternoon at leisure by the pool, the great rock framed in the distance. An optional gentle sunset stroll through the resort's gardens settles you into the rhythm of the island's interior.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Aliya Resort & Spa, Sigiriya ★★★★
Specialist tip: Aliya's infinity pool lines up perfectly with both Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. Time an evening swim for sunset — it is one of the loveliest free hours of the whole tour.
Accessibility: Roughly four hours' driving, broken into comfortable stages with rest stops. The resort is largely single-storey with step-free paths.
3

Sigiriya Rock & Dambulla Cave Temples

Sigiriya

An early start to climb the fifth-century rock fortress of Sigiriya before the heat and crowds — past the famous frescoes and the lion's paws to the palace ruins on the summit, with one of Asia's great views. After a midday rest at the hotel, the afternoon is given to the cave temples of Dambulla, five sublime caverns of golden Buddhas and painted ceilings, visited at golden hour.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Aliya Resort & Spa, Sigiriya ★★★★
Specialist tip: Start the climb by 7am. Wear proper shoes with grip, take water and pace yourself on the open metal staircases — there is shade to rest at the frescoes and the lion's paw terrace.
Accessibility: Sigiriya is a steep climb of around 1,200 uneven steps with exposed metal staircases and no step-free option to the summit — it is not suitable for those with significant mobility, heart or vertigo concerns. We offer two gentler alternatives: the neighbouring Pidurangala Rock gives a magnificent view of Sigiriya itself with a shorter, less exposed climb; or you may explore Sigiriya's flat water gardens and museum at the base and rest at the hotel while others ascend. Dambulla has a flight of steps to the cave entrance but is otherwise gentle, with handrails.
4

Minneriya Safari & Drive to Kandy

Kandy

A morning private jeep safari in Minneriya (or Kaudulla) National Park, home to the celebrated seasonal gathering of wild elephants around the great reservoir — herds of dozens, even hundreds, viewed from the comfort of a seated, elevated open jeep. Continue south through spice gardens to Kandy, the hill-country capital cradled by mountains around its sacred lake, arriving at Amaya Hills for two nights.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Amaya Hills, Kandy ★★★★
Specialist tip: Elephant numbers in Minneriya peak in the dry months (roughly June to September) but the area reliably rewards year-round across Minneriya, Kaudulla and Eco Park — your driver knows which park is best on the day.
Accessibility: The safari is conducted entirely from a seated open jeep with a step up assisted by the crew; tracks are bumpy. The drive to Kandy is around three hours with stops.
5

Kandy: Botanical Gardens, Temple of the Tooth & Puja

Kandy

A gentle morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya — flat, shaded avenues of giant bamboo, an orchid house and the famous avenue of royal palms. In the late afternoon, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka's holiest Buddhist shrine, timed for the evening puja ceremony when drummers announce the opening of the relic chamber. An optional cultural dance show rounds off the day.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Amaya Hills, Kandy ★★★★
Specialist tip: The puja crowds are considerable. I position you near the upper relic-chamber landing a little before the drumming begins so you see the doors open without being jostled. Remove shoes and cover shoulders and knees.
Accessibility: The botanical gardens are flat and largely step-free with long but optional walking. The temple has steps and stone floors; we go at a calm pace and there is seating in the inner halls. A walking stick is fine throughout.
6

The Blue Train to the Tea Country

Nuwara Eliya

One of the world's most beautiful train journeys: the blue train from Kandy climbs through tea estates, waterfalls and misty ridges to the highlands, ridden in a reserved first-class observation carriage. Transfer to the Heritance Tea Factory at 1,900 metres — a converted Victorian factory with log fires, original machinery and views across the working estate. A tea-tasting and an early night by the fire.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Heritance Tea Factory, Nuwara Eliya ★★★★
Specialist tip: Sit on the right-hand side leaving Kandy for the best valley views. The carriage windows open — but keep cameras strapped. Bring a fleece; the highlands turn cool the moment the train climbs above the clouds.
Accessibility: Boarding the train involves a steep step up from low platforms, assisted by our team and the porter; the carriage has a fixed seat for the full journey (around three to four hours). Those who prefer can travel the whole way by private car instead — tell us when you book.
7

Tea Country — A Restful Highland Day

Nuwara Eliya

A deliberate rest day in the cool, green highlands. A leisurely guided visit to a working tea estate and factory to see the leaf picked, withered, rolled and graded, followed by free time to walk the estate paths, take an Ayurvedic massage at the spa or simply read by the fire. Nuwara Eliya — "Little England" — rewards an unhurried afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Heritance Tea Factory, Nuwara Eliya ★★★★
Specialist tip: The early-morning highland air is the clearest you will breathe on the whole tour. Take a cup of single-estate tea onto the terrace before breakfast and watch the mist lift off the slopes.
Accessibility: Tea-estate paths are sloping and uneven in places; the factory tour involves stairs but a shortened, mostly step-free version can be arranged. The day is built around rest, so as much or as little activity as you wish.
8

Descend to Colombo — City Highlights

Colombo

A scenic descent from the highlands to the coast, arriving in Colombo for an afternoon city orientation by private car: the colonial-era Fort and Pettah quarters, the serene Gangaramaya Temple, the seafront Galle Face Green and a stop for tea at the grand old Galle Face Hotel. Overnight at Cinnamon Grand Colombo, a comfortable, central four-star base for your last Sri Lankan night.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Cinnamon Grand Colombo ★★★★
Specialist tip: Colombo's traffic is best beaten by touring the sights largely by car and stepping out only for the highlights. The sunset over Galle Face Green, kite-flyers and street-food carts and all, is the city at its most charming.
Accessibility: The descent is around four hours with stops. City sightseeing is flexible and largely car-based, with short, flat walks at each stop.
9

Fly Colombo to Bangkok

Bangkok

A relaxed morning before your internal flight from Colombo to Bangkok (around three and a half hours), met on arrival by our Thai specialist and transferred to the riverside Royal Orchid Sheraton on the banks of the Chao Phraya. Settle in, and if you wish, take an early-evening hotel river-shuttle to watch the lit-up temples glide past as the city cools.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Bangkok ★★★★
Specialist tip: Ask for a high room on the river side. Bangkok at night from above the Chao Phraya, with the rice barges and dinner cruises sliding past, is the loveliest possible welcome to Thailand.
Accessibility: Airport assistance and fast-track where available at both ends. The hotel has full lift access and step-free riverside areas; the river-shuttle pier has a short ramp with staff assistance.
10

Bangkok: Grand Palace & Temples by River

Bangkok

The great set-piece day. An early private long-tail boat glides through the old canals (khlongs) to the Grand Palace and the dazzling Temple of the Emerald Buddha, then on to Wat Pho and its vast reclining Buddha. After a midday rest at the hotel through the heat, an optional evening at leisure — perhaps a gentle riverside dinner cruise.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Bangkok ★★★★
Specialist tip: The Grand Palace enforces a strict dress code — shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Go at opening time to beat both the heat and the tour groups, and let your guide lead you straight to the Emerald Buddha first.
Accessibility: The Grand Palace and Wat Pho involve extensive flat walking on uneven, hot courtyards with some thresholds to step over and shoes removed in shrines; benches and shade are available. The long-tail boat has a step down assisted by the boatman. A shorter, more selective temple visit can be arranged.
11

Bangkok at Leisure (Optional Excursions)

Bangkok

A free day to suit your pace. Options we can arrange include a gentle morning at the floating market of Damnoen Saduak, a guided visit to Jim Thompson's teak house and silk story, a Thai cookery class, or simply a restful day enjoying the hotel's riverside pool and spa. Your guide tailors the day to you.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Bangkok ★★★★
Specialist tip: If you would rather swap the city for the hills, ask us about substituting a short Chiang Mai add-on here — temples, elephants cared for ethically and cooler northern air. It is the most popular variation on this tour.
Accessibility: Entirely flexible. A pool-and-spa day at the hotel is fully step-free; any excursion is matched to your mobility, and the floating market is viewed from a seated boat.
12

Fly Bangkok to the Maldives

South Ari Atoll, Maldives

A morning flight from Bangkok to Malé (around four and a half hours), met on arrival and transferred by speedboat across the lagoon to Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa in the South Ari Atoll. Step onto powder sand, settle into your villa and let the Indian Ocean take over. The first of four nights with nothing whatsoever to do.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, Maldives ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Vilamendhoo has one of the most accessible house reefs in the Maldives — you can snorkel straight off the beach into clouds of fish without a boat. Pick up a mask on arrival; the reef is busiest with life in the first hour after breakfast.
Accessibility: A scenic speedboat transfer of around 25–30 minutes; crew assist boarding and disembarking at the jetty. The island is flat with sand and boardwalk paths; beach villas are a short, level stroll from the restaurants.
13

Maldives — Beach & Lagoon

South Ari Atoll, Maldives

A full, free day in the Maldives. Swim in the warm lagoon, snorkel the house reef, take a sunset cruise in search of dolphins, indulge at the overwater spa or do gloriously nothing under a palm. South Ari Atoll is famous for whale sharks; an optional guided snorkel excursion goes in search of these gentle giants.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, Maldives ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The South Ari Atoll is one of the few places on earth where whale sharks are seen year-round. The excursion is a seated boat ride with an optional gentle snorkel — even non-swimmers enjoy watching from the boat.
Accessibility: Everything today is optional. The spa, restaurants and beaches are reached by flat boardwalks; the sunset cruise and snorkel trips involve a step onto a boat with crew assistance.
14

Maldives — At Leisure

South Ari Atoll, Maldives

Another unhurried day on the island. Many guests find a rhythm by now: an early swim before the heat, a long breakfast, the shade of the afternoon, a sundowner on the beach. The resort's overwater villas, spa and several restaurants are all yours to enjoy at whatever pace suits.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, Maldives ★★★★★
Specialist tip: If you have upgraded to an overwater villa, take your morning coffee on the deck steps and watch the reef sharks and rays cruise the shallows below — utterly harmless and endlessly mesmerising.
Accessibility: No fixed activities. All facilities are connected by level boardwalks; buggy assistance can be arranged across the island on request.
15

Maldives — Final Full Day

South Ari Atoll, Maldives

Your last full day in the Indian Ocean. A final snorkel over the house reef, a farewell spa treatment, or simply a long, slow afternoon on the sand. As the sun sets on your sixteen-night journey, raise a glass to leopards and elephants, gilded temples and tea-misted hills, and the turquoise stillness that has closed it all so beautifully.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, Maldives ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Book a sunset-time spa treatment for your final evening, then dinner on the beach. It is the gentlest possible farewell to a journey that began, all those days ago, climbing a rock in the jungle.
Accessibility: A wholly restful day with no transfers and no fixed schedule.
16

Maldives — Departure for the UK

Malé / UK

A final slow breakfast over the lagoon before your speedboat transfer back to Malé and your flight home. After sixteen nights spanning three countries — Sri Lanka's ancient heart, Bangkok's gilded temples and the Maldives' turquoise calm — you depart with a journey complete in every sense.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 0.5 km
Specialist tip: Departure transfers are timed generously so there is no rush. Most flights to the UK leave Malé in the evening or overnight — your villa late-checkout and the resort's departure lounge make the final hours unhurried.
Accessibility: Speedboat transfer with crew assistance, and airport assistance at Malé can be arranged for a fully unhurried check-in.

Everything we wanted from one trip

We could never agree on a holiday — Brian wanted temples and history, I wanted a beach. This gave us both and then some. Sri Lanka was a revelation: the elephants in Minneriya from the jeep, the blue train (sit on the right!), the tea factory hotel with its log fires. Bangkok's Grand Palace took our breath away. And then four nights in the Maldives to do absolutely nothing. Isabella thought of everything and never once rushed us.

A grand tour that respects your knees

At 71 I worried three countries would be exhausting. It wasn't. They were honest about Sigiriya being a steep climb, so I did the Pidurangala alternative instead and saw the rock beautifully without the metal staircases, then waited in comfort while my son went up. Private cars everywhere, someone always carrying the bags, and that wonderful rest day in the tea country. The Maldives finished it perfectly. Outstanding value.

Three countries, beautifully joined up

What struck us was how seamless it all felt — internal flights with someone meeting us each time, no queuing, no fuss. The temples of Kandy and Bangkok were the cultural highlights, the tea country the surprise we loved most, and Vilamendhoo in the Maldives had a reef you could snorkel straight off the beach. Roger saw a whale shark! A perfectly paced trip for our age.

My solo trip of a lifetime at 68

I travelled alone on the waived-supplement October departure and never once felt it. Isabella looked after me wonderfully through Sri Lanka, the Bangkok guide was just as kind, and the Maldives resort was an easy, friendly place to be on my own. The pacing was spot on — busy mornings, restful afternoons. I came home thrilled with myself and already planning the next one.

Wonderful — and take the overwater upgrade

A superb, varied journey we would recommend warmly. The cultural triangle and the train were everything we hoped, Bangkok was dazzling, and the Maldives a dream. My only tip: we upgraded to an overwater villa for the last two nights and wished we had done all four — so budget for it if you can. Otherwise faultless, and brilliantly organised across three countries.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How demanding is this tour really — is it suitable for over-50s and over-60s?

It is a Moderate-rated journey designed specifically with mature travellers in mind. Walking is typically one to four kilometres a day on flat or gently sloping ground, all transfers are private and assisted, and active mornings are always followed by gentle afternoons. There is a deliberate rest day in the tea country and four wholly restful nights in the Maldives. The single demanding element is the optional Sigiriya climb, for which we always offer a gentler alternative. Most fit, mobile travellers in their 50s, 60s and 70s manage it very comfortably — and we tailor the pace to you.

Do I have to climb Sigiriya? What are the alternatives?

Not at all. Sigiriya is a steep ascent of around 1,200 uneven steps with exposed metal staircases and no step-free route to the summit, so it is not suitable for everyone. We offer two excellent alternatives. The neighbouring Pidurangala Rock is a shorter, less exposed climb that rewards you with a magnificent view of Sigiriya itself — many of our guests actually prefer it. Alternatively, you can explore Sigiriya's flat water gardens and museum at the base and then relax at the hotel while others ascend. You will not feel you have missed out whichever you choose.

What visas and entry requirements do I need for three countries?

Three arrangements, all straightforward, and we guide you through each. For Sri Lanka, UK citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), applied for online before departure. For Thailand, UK passport holders currently enter visa-free for tourism for short stays, though Thailand has introduced a digital arrival card (TDAC) to complete online shortly before travel — we send current instructions. For the Maldives, a free 30-day visa is issued on arrival with no advance application. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates with blank pages. We always confirm the latest requirements with your booking, as government rules can change.

How do the internal flights and transfers work between countries?

Seamlessly, and entirely arranged by us. You take two internal flights — Colombo to Bangkok (around three and a half hours) and Bangkok to Malé (around four and a half hours) — and you are met on both sides of each, with airport assistance and fast-track where available. In Sri Lanka and Bangkok you travel by private air-conditioned car with a driver; in the Maldives the resort transfer is by speedboat with crew assistance. You never carry your own luggage between legs or navigate an airport alone.

When is the best time to take this journey?

Our departures run October to March, which is the dry, calm season across all three destinations — warm sunshine, gentle seas and the most reliable weather for the Maldives and for Bangkok and Sri Lanka's west and hill country. December and January are the peak months with the most consistent sunshine; October and March are lovely, slightly quieter shoulder months. Our October departures also waive the single supplement, making them especially good value for solo travellers.

Can I add a beach or Chiang Mai stop, or extend the Maldives?

Yes — this is a private tour and very flexible. The most popular variation is a two-night Chiang Mai extension in northern Thailand (cooler air, old-city temples and an ethical elephant sanctuary) in place of a Bangkok leisure day. You can also add a Yala wildlife night in Sri Lanka, extend the Maldives finale, or upgrade to an overwater villa. Tell us your priorities when you enquire and we will design the ideal version for you.

What health precautions and vaccinations are advised?

No vaccinations are legally required for UK travellers, but a travel health clinic or your GP may recommend Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus as standard for Asia. Malaria risk is low in the areas we visit and most travellers do not take prophylaxis, but please discuss this with your doctor. We recommend a travel health consultation six to eight weeks before departure. Tap water is not safe to drink on the land journey, so bottled water is provided throughout, and your guide knows the nearest reputable private hospitals at every stage.

Is this journey suitable for solo travellers?

Very much so. A dedicated guide is with you on the cultural legs, all logistics are handled for you, and the gentle pacing makes it feel comfortable rather than daunting. The Maldives resort is a relaxed, friendly place to be on your own. Our two October departures waive the single supplement entirely; on other dates a modest supplement applies for sole occupancy.
