About this tour

Some journeys are about seeing as much as possible. This one is about the opposite — arriving home genuinely restored. Across eighteen unhurried days we trace a gentle arc through three Indian Ocean countries, each chosen for its own way of healing the traveller: the wildlife and colonial calm of southern Sri Lanka, the Ayurvedic backwaters of Kerala, and the warm, weightless stillness of the Maldives. It is, we believe, the most restful three-country combination available anywhere in Asia. We begin gently in Sri Lanka. There is no race to the ancient cities here — instead, a soft introduction in Colombo, then a leisurely run south to the great national parks of Udawalawe and Yala, where elephants wade through the morning mist and leopards drape themselves over warm rocks at first light. Every sighting is enjoyed from the cushioned seat of a private jeep; nothing is asked of your legs. The colonial fort city of Galle, with its flat, walkable ramparts and four centuries of trading history, provides a graceful pause before we cross to India. Kerala is the spiritual heart of this journey. In Kochi, where Chinese fishing nets still dip into the harbour and the spice trade has scented the air for six hundred years, you board a private houseboat and drift out onto the Alleppey backwaters — a labyrinth of palm-fringed canals where life moves at the speed of a paddle. From there we settle into a dedicated Ayurveda retreat for several nights of consultation, treatment and the slow, deliberate rhythm that Ayurvedic medicine has prescribed for five thousand years. Your specialist, Meera Nair, who trained in Kerala and has guided wellness travellers for fifteen years, ensures the experience is authentic, comfortable and tailored entirely to you. The journey closes in the Maldives, on a private island where a single standout villa awaits — your only five-star indulgence of the trip, and a deliberate one. Here there is nothing to do but rest: warm lagoon swims, slow breakfasts, an evening sky thick with stars. After two weeks of gentle movement, these final days ask nothing of you at all. You fly home not exhausted by a holiday, but genuinely renewed by one.

Meera Nair was born in Kochi and trained in classical Ayurveda before turning to wellness travel fifteen years ago. She accompanies this journey from Colombo to the Maldives, and her relationships with Kerala's most respected Ayurvedic physicians mean your treatments are authentic rather than the diluted "spa Ayurveda" found in resort brochures. Her calm, unhurried manner sets the tone for the entire trip.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • The gentlest pace of any tour we run — built around rest, with generous free time every day and no early starts beyond the optional dawn safari
  • Private air-conditioned transfers throughout Sri Lanka and Kerala; no public transport, no carrying luggage, no rushing for connections
  • Wildlife is watched entirely from a seated jeep — no walking safaris, no rough terrain on foot
  • A genuine Kerala Ayurveda retreat with a doctor's consultation and treatments tailored to mature travellers, including gentle options for those with joint or mobility concerns
  • Step-free access prioritised at every hotel; ground-floor or lift-served rooms confirmed in advance
  • The Maldives finale is pure recovery — flat boardwalks, calm warm water and absolutely no obligations
  • Meera's medical contacts across all three countries, and her fluent Malayalam and Sinhala, provide real peace of mind far from home

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Colombo

Colombo

Meera meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfers you by private car to a calm, well-run city hotel a short distance from the ocean. There is nothing to do today but settle in, rest after the flight and, if you feel like it, take a slow early-evening stroll along Galle Face Green as the kite-flyers gather. An early night sets the gentle tone for everything that follows.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Cinnamon Grand Colombo ★★★★
Specialist tip: Resist the urge to do anything ambitious on day one. The flight from the UK is long. A gentle walk, an early dinner and a full night's sleep are the best possible preparation for the journey ahead.
Accessibility: The hotel has lifts to all floors and step-free access from the porte-cochère. Airport transfer is in a private air-conditioned car with luggage handled for you throughout.
2

Colombo at Leisure — Drive South

Colombo / Bentota

A relaxed morning. Those who wish can join Meera for a short, easy tour of the Gangaramaya Temple and the colonial Fort district; those who prefer can simply enjoy the hotel garden and pool. After lunch, a comfortable two-hour coastal drive south on the expressway brings you to a beachfront garden hotel at Bentota for a first night beside the Indian Ocean.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Avani Bentota Resort ★★★★
Specialist tip: The expressway south is smooth and fast — far gentler than the old coast road. We stop once at a roadside fruit stall so you can try a king coconut, the sweet orange-shelled variety the locals drink for hydration.
Accessibility: Bentota hotel has ground-floor garden rooms available on request, with level access to the pool and beach terrace.
3

Bentota — A Restful Day by the Ocean

Bentota

A full day to recover from the journey and ease into island time. The beach is long, golden and calm; the lagoon behind the hotel is sheltered for an easy swim. Meera can arrange a gentle introductory Ayurvedic oil massage at the hotel spa — a foretaste of Kerala — or a short boat trip on the Bentota lagoon to spot water birds and monitor lizards. Otherwise, the day is entirely yours.

Meals: BreakfastHotel: Avani Bentota Resort ★★★★
Specialist tip: The lagoon-side spa here uses Sri Lankan rather than Keralan Ayurvedic traditions — closely related but subtly different. It is a lovely way to begin tuning your body to the slower rhythm we will deepen in Kerala.
4

Udawalawe National Park — Elephants

Udawalawe

A scenic two-and-a-half-hour drive inland to Udawalawe, the gentlest of Sri Lanka's great parks and the best place in Asia to see wild elephants in comfort. After lunch and a rest at your lodge, an afternoon game drive in a private open jeep takes you among herds of elephant grazing the open grassland around the reservoir — often within a few unforgettable metres. The terrain is flat and the drive smooth; you remain seated throughout.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort ★★★★
Specialist tip: Udawalawe is far less crowded than Yala and the elephant sightings are almost guaranteed — over a hundred resident animals. For mature travellers it is the kinder safari: open country, easy spotting and no jostling convoy of jeeps.
Accessibility: The jeep has a low step and the driver and Meera assist with boarding. The full drive is seated; those who prefer can request extra cushioning for the bench seats.
5

Drive to Yala — Optional Leopard Safari

Yala

A short morning drive brings you to the edge of Yala National Park, famed for having the highest density of leopards of any park on Earth. Settle into your tented lodge and rest through the heat of the day beside the pool. In the cooler late afternoon, an optional private game drive goes in search of leopard, sloth bear and the park's abundant birdlife. Those who prefer pure rest are very welcome to stay at the lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Cinnamon Wild Yala ★★★★
Specialist tip: Leopards are most active in the late afternoon, so we favour the cooler 3pm drive over the punishing dawn start. You see just as much and sleep far better for it.
Accessibility: The lodge has level pathways lit at night. Game drives are optional and entirely seated; there is no obligation to take part.
6

Yala to Galle — The Colonial Coast

Galle

A leisurely coastal drive west to Galle, the best-preserved colonial fort city in Asia. The afternoon is gentle: a slow wander through the flat, atmospheric streets within the Dutch ramparts, past centuries-old merchant houses now home to cafes and craft shops, ending with sunset over the Indian Ocean from the walls. Your boutique hotel sits within the fort itself.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Fort Bazaar, Galle ★★★★
Specialist tip: Galle Fort is one of the few historic sites in Asia that is genuinely flat and walkable for everyone. The rampart walk from the clock tower to the lighthouse takes twenty easy minutes and gives the loveliest light of the day.
Accessibility: Fort streets are cobbled in places but level. The rampart walk is optional; benches are spaced along the route for resting.
7

Galle at Leisure — Farewell to Sri Lanka

Galle

A free morning to enjoy Galle at your own pace — perhaps the small maritime museum, the independent bookshop, or simply a long breakfast watching fort life go by. Meera is on hand for those who would like a gentle guided stroll. A final Sri Lankan evening before tomorrow's flight to India.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Fort Bazaar, Galle ★★★★
Specialist tip: The jewellers of Galle work with locally mined moonstone and sapphire. Even if you don't buy, a visit to a reputable workshop — Meera knows the trustworthy ones — is a fascinating, unhurried way to spend an hour.
8

Fly Colombo to Kochi — Arrival in Kerala

Kochi

A morning transfer to Colombo airport for the short flight across the Indian Ocean to Kochi, gateway to Kerala — the lush, palm-laced "God's Own Country" of India's tropical south-west. Meera accompanies you throughout. On arrival you transfer to a heritage hotel in atmospheric Fort Kochi and rest, with the evening free to settle in.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1.5 kmHotel: Forte Kochi ★★★★
Specialist tip: The flight from Colombo to Kochi is barely ninety minutes — one of the shortest international hops in Asia. We arrange a quiet airport assistance service at Kochi so immigration and baggage are entirely stress-free.
Accessibility: Wheelchair assistance through both airports can be arranged at no charge — simply tell us when you book. The Fort Kochi hotel is a heritage property; ground-floor rooms are reserved for our guests.
9

Fort Kochi — Spice History at a Gentle Pace

Kochi

A relaxed exploration of Fort Kochi, where six centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British trade have left a uniquely layered townscape. See the iconic cantilevered Chinese fishing nets along the harbour, the 1503 St Francis Church, and the spice warehouses of Mattancherry, their air still thick with cardamom, pepper and ginger. The pace is unhurried, with frequent stops and the car never far away. The evening brings an optional Kathakali dance performance — a seated, gentle cultural delight.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Forte Kochi ★★★★
Specialist tip: Arrive at the Chinese fishing nets around 5pm when the fishermen lower them for the evening catch against the setting sun. It is the most photographed scene in Kerala and, unusually, lives up to the postcards.
Accessibility: Mattancherry's spice streets are flat. The Kathakali performance is fully seated and lasts around ninety minutes, with the elaborate make-up applied on stage beforehand.
10

Kochi to Alleppey — Board the Houseboat

Alleppey Backwaters

A short drive south to Alleppey, the "Venice of the East," where you board your own private traditional kettuvallam houseboat — a converted rice barge with a comfortable en-suite bedroom, a shaded sitting deck and a personal crew including a cook. The rest of the day is spent drifting through the palm-fringed backwaters: a slow, hypnotic glide past villages, paddy fields and waterborne daily life, with a freshly prepared Keralan lunch and dinner served on board.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Private Alleppey Houseboat (Spice Coast Cruises) ★★★★
Specialist tip: Ask the crew to moor early in the evening beside a quiet paddy field rather than in the busier channels. As the light fades and the fireflies come out over the water, it is one of the most peaceful nights you will ever spend.
Accessibility: Boarding the houseboat involves a short step from the jetty, with crew assistance. Once aboard, all living space is on a single level. The boat moors overnight — it does not cruise after dark — for a calm, stable night's sleep.
11

Backwaters to the Ayurveda Retreat

Backwaters / Ayurveda Retreat

A final gentle morning cruise through the narrower canals — the most beautiful and intimate stretch of the backwaters — before disembarking and transferring a short distance to your dedicated Ayurveda retreat on the shores of Lake Vembanad. On arrival, the resident Ayurvedic physician gives each guest a full consultation, assessing your constitution (dosha) and designing a personal programme of treatments, diet and rest for your stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Kumarakom Ayurvedic Retreat ★★★★
Specialist tip: Be open and honest in your consultation, especially about any medication, joint pain or sleep trouble. Kerala's Ayurvedic doctors are properly qualified physicians and will tailor everything — including the firmness of massage — to what your body actually needs.
Accessibility: The retreat has step-free villas and treatment rooms. The doctor adapts all treatments for mobility, blood pressure and other concerns; nothing is one-size-fits-all.
12

Ayurveda Retreat — Treatment Day

Ayurveda Retreat

Your first full day of Ayurvedic care unfolds at the retreat's own rhythm: a morning treatment such as abhyanga (a flowing two-therapist oil massage) or shirodhara (a warm stream of oil poured gently over the forehead), followed by herbal tea, rest, a light Ayurvedic lunch and an afternoon of gentle yoga or meditation by the lake. Evenings are quiet and early. There is nowhere to be and nothing to rush for.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Kumarakom Ayurvedic Retreat ★★★★
Specialist tip: Shirodhara is the treatment guests remember for years — that warm thread of oil over the brow induces a deep, almost meditative calm. If you only try one therapy here, make it that.
Accessibility: Yoga and meditation sessions offer chair-based and floor-based options. The retreat lawns and lakeside paths are level and gently shaded.
13

Ayurveda Retreat — Rest & Renewal

Ayurveda Retreat

A second day of treatment and rest, following the programme your physician has designed. Many guests find this the day their body and mind finally let go of the year behind them. Beyond the treatments, the retreat offers a swimming pool, a library, lakeside walks and the simple pleasure of doing very little. A short sunset boat trip on Lake Vembanad is available for those who wish.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Kumarakom Ayurvedic Retreat ★★★★
Specialist tip: Keralan Ayurveda is at its best across consecutive days — the treatments build on one another. By this third day many guests report sleeping more deeply than they have in years. Lean into it.
14

Final Ayurvedic Morning — Drive to Kochi

Ayurveda Retreat / Kochi

A final treatment and a closing consultation, where the physician sends you on your way with simple, practical advice for carrying a little of this calm home. After a leisurely lunch, an easy drive back towards Kochi for an overnight stay near the airport, ready for tomorrow's flight to the Maldives.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Forte Kochi ★★★★
Specialist tip: The doctor's parting advice — usually a few dietary tweaks and a simple breathing practice — is worth writing down. Guests who keep even one small habit going report the benefits lasting well into the British winter.
15

Fly Kochi to Malé — Arrival in the Maldives

Maldives

A morning flight from Kochi to Malé, the Maldivian capital, where a warm welcome and a scenic transfer — by speedboat or, depending on the resort, a seaplane skimming over impossibly blue atolls — carries you to your private island. Settle into your standout villa, the single five-star indulgence of the journey, and let the stillness take over. The afternoon is for a first warm lagoon swim and an unhurried sunset.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Vadoo sits just south of Malé, so the transfer is a quick, gentle speedboat rather than a long seaplane flight — far kinder after a morning of travel. You can be in your villa, feet up, within an hour of landing.
Accessibility: The resort's boardwalks are flat and step-free. Buggy assistance between the jetty and villas is available; tell us of any mobility needs and we confirm the most accessible villa in advance.
16

Maldives — A Day of Pure Rest

Maldives

A day with no schedule whatsoever. Swim in the warm, glass-clear lagoon directly off your villa's deck; snorkel the house reef among parrotfish and turtles; or simply lie back with a book as the ocean does its quiet work. The resort spa offers Maldivian and Ayurvedic-inspired treatments for those who wish to continue the wellness theme. Dinner is beneath a vast canopy of stars.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The house reef here drops away just a few strokes from the villa decks, so even gentle swimmers can snorkel over coral and turtles without a boat. Reef shoes and a float vest are provided free at the dive centre — do ask.
17

Maldives — Lagoon & Stars

Maldives

A final full day in the lagoon. Greet the morning with sunrise yoga over the water, drift through the afternoon between sea and shade, and perhaps join a sunset dolphin cruise — pods of spinner dolphins gather in these waters most evenings. A farewell dinner closes a journey designed, from first day to last, around your wellbeing.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Adaaran Prestige Vadoo ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The sunset dolphin cruise is gentle, seated and almost always successful — the spinner dolphins of the South Malé Atoll are remarkably reliable. A lovely, calm way to spend your final Maldivian evening.
18

Maldives — Departure for the UK

Malé / UK

A final slow breakfast over the lagoon before your transfer back to Malé and your flight home. After eighteen days of leopards, backwaters, healing treatments and turquoise stillness, you depart not drained by a holiday but genuinely restored by one — carrying a little of the Indian Ocean's calm back to the British winter.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 0.5 km
Accessibility: Departure transfers are timed generously so there is no rush. Airport assistance at Malé can be arranged for a fully unhurried check-in.

Guest reviews

We came home genuinely restored

We have done plenty of busy escorted tours and always returned needing a holiday to recover from the holiday. This was the opposite. The pace was beautifully gentle from the first day, the Udawalawe elephants were magical from the comfort of the jeep, and the Kerala Ayurveda retreat did something to both of us that we are still feeling weeks later. Geoffrey slept better than he has in years. Meera was the calmest, kindest guide we have ever travelled with. The Maldives at the end was simply the cherry on top.

The healing journey I needed at 67

After a difficult year I wanted rest, not a checklist of sights, and this delivered exactly that. Travelling solo I never once felt alone or unsafe — Meera was always nearby. The houseboat night on the Alleppey backwaters was pure magic; the Ayurveda doctor took my blood pressure and my history seriously and tailored everything to me. I disembarked the Maldives flight home feeling, for the first time in a long while, completely well.

Three countries, not a single rushed moment

What impressed us most was how seamless three countries felt — private cars, short flights, someone always handling the luggage and the paperwork. Patricia has a dodgy knee and we had worried about safaris and boats, but everything was seated and assisted and she managed beautifully. The Galle fort was flat and lovely, the backwaters unforgettable, and that final Maldives villa a proper treat. Wonderful value for what it includes.

Slow travel done properly

We are in our seventies and increasingly value rest over rushing about. This itinerary understood that perfectly. The Ayurveda days at Kumarakom were the highlight — Brian was sceptical and is now a complete convert to shirodhara. The whole trip was unhurried, comfortable and genuinely restful. Meera's knowledge of Kerala, where she grew up, made the Indian leg especially rich.

Deeply relaxing, with one tip

A beautiful, restorative journey and I would recommend it without hesitation. The Ayurveda retreat and the Maldives were everything I hoped for. My only note is that I would have happily spent an extra night or two at the retreat rather than the single Bentota beach night — so do consider the extended Ayurveda add-on, which I now wish I had booked. Meera was marvellous throughout.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this tour really restful, or is it just marketed that way?

It is genuinely the gentlest journey we run. There are no compulsory early starts beyond an optional afternoon safari, no walking safaris, no long marches around ruins. Wildlife is watched from a seated jeep, the backwaters from a houseboat sofa, and three full days are devoted to Ayurvedic rest in Kerala before the Maldives finale, which asks nothing of you at all. Generous free time and midday rest are built into every single day. We designed it specifically for travellers who want to return home renewed rather than exhausted.

Do I need to know anything about Ayurveda beforehand?

Not at all. On arrival at the Kerala retreat a qualified Ayurvedic physician gives each guest a full consultation, assessing your constitution and any health considerations, then designs a personal programme of treatments, diet and rest. Everything is explained as you go. Treatments such as a flowing oil massage (abhyanga) or a warm stream of oil over the forehead (shirodhara) are deeply relaxing and require nothing of you but to lie back. Meera, who trained in Ayurveda herself, is on hand to answer questions and ensure you are comfortable.

Is Ayurvedic treatment suitable if I have health conditions or take medication?

In most cases yes, but the consultation exists precisely to address this. Kerala's Ayurvedic doctors are properly qualified physicians who take your full medical history, current medication and any conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or joint problems into account, and tailor or omit treatments accordingly. Please be open and honest in your consultation. Do tell us about significant health conditions when you book so we can flag them in advance, and always travel with comprehensive medical insurance. Ayurveda complements rather than replaces your usual medical care — continue any prescribed medication as normal.

How much walking and standing is involved?

Very little — typically one to three kilometres a day, on flat ground, and almost all of it optional. Galle Fort and Fort Kochi involve gentle, flat strolls with the car always nearby. Wildlife is viewed entirely from a seated jeep. The houseboat and Maldives stays are largely seated or reclining. The only points requiring assistance are the short step onto the houseboat and the Maldives jetty, where crew help you aboard. A walking stick is absolutely fine throughout.

What visas do I need for three countries?

Three arrangements, all straightforward and all of which we guide you through. For Sri Lanka, UK citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), currently USD 20, applied for online before departure. For India, you need an e-Tourist Visa, applied for online (currently around USD 25) — we recommend doing this two to three weeks ahead. For the Maldives, a free 30-day visa is issued on arrival with no advance application needed. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates with several blank pages.

When is the best time to take this journey?

Our departures run from October to March, which is the dry, calm season across all three destinations — warm sunshine, gentle seas and the most reliable weather for the Maldives and the south-west coasts of Sri Lanka and Kerala. December and January are the peak months with the most consistent sunshine. October and March are lovely, slightly quieter shoulder months — and our October departures carry no single supplement, making them especially good value for solo travellers.

What health precautions and vaccinations are advised?

No vaccinations are legally required for UK travellers, but a travel health clinic or your GP may recommend Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus as standard for South Asia. Malaria risk is low in the areas we visit and most travellers do not take prophylaxis, but please discuss this with your doctor. We recommend a travel health consultation six to eight weeks before departure. Tap water is not safe to drink anywhere on the land journey — bottled water is provided throughout. Meera carries a first-aid kit and knows the nearest reputable private hospitals at every stage.

Is this journey suitable for solo travellers?

Very much so — it is one of our most popular choices for solo travellers seeking rest and renewal. Meera is present throughout, transfers and logistics are entirely handled for you, and the gentle, wellness-focused nature of the trip makes it feel safe and nurturing rather than daunting. The Ayurveda retreat in particular is a welcoming place to travel alone. Our two October departures waive the single supplement entirely; on other dates a modest supplement applies for sole occupancy.
