About this tour

Chiang Mai rewards the traveller who stays long enough to move beyond the obvious. Seven days in the city — staying at the Anantara on the banks of the Mae Ping River — allows a genuine immersion in northern Thailand's Lanna culture: its temples built on different architectural principles from Bangkok's royal monuments, its food distinct from the central Thai cuisine most visitors know, its mountain communities maintaining traditions that have nothing to do with the tourist economy below. Finn Rawlinson leads this small-group journey (maximum 10 guests) with the easy familiarity of someone who knows every lane in the old city and every monk who offers a worthwhile conversation. He has been leading Chiang Mai deep-dives for Holidays to Asia since 2016, and his enthusiasm for the place — despite eight years of regular visits — remains entirely genuine. The itinerary balances engagement with rest. Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak and a national park of extraordinary bird life and forest scenery, takes one full day. An ethical elephant sanctuary takes another. Three temple mornings are spaced across the week, each revealing a different aspect of Lanna Buddhist tradition. And two completely free afternoons allow you to discover what Chiang Mai means to you personally — the craft workshops of Wualai Road, the Sunday Walking Street market, the cooking school run by a local family, or simply the shaded café near Tha Phae Gate that brews the best drip coffee in northern Thailand.

Led by Finn Rawlinson, our small-group Thailand specialist with eight years of experience.

Old City Temple Trail

Chiang Mai Old City

Morning in the ancient walled city: Wat Chedi Luang (the enormous 14th-century chedi partially destroyed in an earthquake), Wat Phra Singh (Chiang Mai's most revered Lanna temple) and the Three Kings Monument. Finn provides the historical context that transforms these beautiful structures from impressive ruins into comprehensible stories. Afternoon free to explore the old city independently.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Anantara Chiang Mai Resort ★★★★★
Specialist tip: After Wat Phra Singh, Finn leads a 10-minute walk to a nearby coffee roastery that has been operating since 1978. Best coffee in Chiang Mai, no contest.
3

Elephant Sanctuary Full Day

Chiang Mai region

A full day at one of the region's most ethical elephant sanctuaries — home to elephants rescued from logging, trekking and street-begging trades. The morning is spent walking with the elephants through forest, feeding them, watching them interact with each other, and bathing them in the river. The mahouts share each elephant's story; by midday most guests find they've become strongly attached to one elephant in particular.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (picnic at the sanctuary)Walking: approx. 5 kmHotel: Anantara Chiang Mai Resort ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Wear clothes you don't mind muddying. The elephant bathing is not optional if you want the full experience — embrace it completely.

Doi Inthanon National Park

Doi Inthanon National Park

Drive into the mountains to Doi Inthanon National Park — Thailand's highest peak at 2,565 metres, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and one of the finest highland natural environments in mainland Southeast Asia. Visit the twin Royal Chedis (built in honour of the King and Queen) with their gardens and panoramic views, walk through cloud forest to the summit, and stop at the Wachirathan Waterfall. Return to Chiang Mai in the afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (packed lunch at the park)Walking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Anantara Chiang Mai Resort ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Bring a light layer — the summit can be as cool as 8°C even in the warm season. Doi Inthanon is one of Thailand's best birdwatching destinations; Finn carries binoculars for the group.
Accessibility: The summit walk involves some uneven terrain. A shorter accessible path to the Royal Chedis is available and very rewarding.

Warorot Market & Thai Cooking Class

Chiang Mai

Morning at Warorot Market for ingredient shopping: galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime, dried chillies, sticky rice, Chiang Mai sausage. Then to a cookery school set in a traditional teak house garden for a half-day class in northern Thai cuisine — the khao soi (coconut curry noodle), the larb (minced meat salad), the mango sticky rice. You'll eat everything you cook. Afternoon free.

Morning drive up to Doi Suthep — the sacred mountain temple that guards the city. Visit the gleaming golden chedi and the royal Bhubing Palace gardens, then descend to a hill tribe market. In the late afternoon, Monk Chat at Wat Suan Dok: a facilitated conversation with English-speaking monks about Buddhist philosophy, the monastic life and what drew them to practice. Many guests find this the emotional highlight of the entire week.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Anantara Chiang Mai Resort ★★★★★
Specialist tip: There is no pressure to ask "religious" questions at the Monk Chat. Many guests have their best conversations about food, football and daily life. The monks are curious about you too.

Who will plan your holiday

Finn Rawlinson

Finn grew up in Kendal, Cumbria, and came to Thailand after teaching English in Bangkok in the early 2010s. He has been leading small-group tours for Holidays to Asia since 2016, developing a reputation for keeping groups feeling like close friends rather than a collection of strangers. He reads groups intuitively — knowing when to add depth and when to simply let the place do the talking. His Thai language skills are functional and his street-food knowledge is encyclopaedic.

The Monk Chat alone was worth the trip

We've done many cultural tours but the Monk Chat at Wat Suan Dok was something we'll talk about for years. We ended up in a conversation about impermanence and loss that was deeply moving. Finn had warned us it might go somewhere unexpected — he was right. The elephant sanctuary was extraordinary too. Wonderful group, wonderful trip.

Seven days was not enough

I travel solo and Chiang Mai was new to me. By day three I felt completely at home, which is a credit to both Finn and the city. Doi Inthanon in the cloud forest was a highlight I hadn't expected. I've already looked at extending next time. The Anantara is the nicest hotel I've stayed in.

Perfect pacing, genuine depth

Many tours called "gentle" still feel rushed. This one genuinely wasn't. Afternoons to ourselves, no morning starts before 9, and when we were out we were learning something real rather than being herded past highlights. The cooking class was genuinely useful — I've already made khao soi twice at home.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fly into Chiang Mai directly, or can I fly into Bangkok first?

Both options work well. Many guests fly London to Bangkok and add a few days in Bangkok independently before catching a domestic flight to Chiang Mai. We can arrange the Bangkok extension and the domestic flight as part of your package.

Is the elephant sanctuary visit genuinely ethical?

Yes — we work exclusively with sanctuaries that do not permit riding, do not use bullhooks, and that provide large-range natural environments for their animals. The sanctuaries we use have been assessed in person by Sophie and Finn. We do not work with attractions that have not passed our ethical assessment.

How does the Monk Chat work?

The Monk Chat at Wat Suan Dok is a programme organised by the temple itself to improve monks' English and foster cross-cultural dialogue. Guests sit with one or two English-speaking monks (usually novices or young monks) for around an hour of informal conversation. There are no set topics. Questions about Buddhist philosophy, monastic life or Thai culture are all welcomed.

Is Chiang Mai safe for a single woman travelling alone?

Yes — Chiang Mai is consistently rated one of Thailand's safest cities and among Southeast Asia's most welcoming for solo female travellers. With Finn's group and the comfort of 5-star accommodation, solo women consistently report feeling completely at ease throughout.

What is the Sunday Walking Street?

Every Sunday evening, Wualai Road in Chiang Mai's silver district closes to traffic and transforms into an outdoor market of local crafts, street food and live music. It's significantly more authentic and local than the more famous Night Bazaar, and runs from around 16:00 to 22:00.

Can this tour be extended into a private itinerary?

Yes — the Chiang Mai 7-day can be the centrepiece of a longer private tour. We can add Bangkok (pre-tour) and Koh Lanta or Koh Samui (post-tour) to create a 12–16 day private itinerary. Speak to our specialists about a tailor-made version.
