About this tour

Cambodia and Vietnam have been deeply intertwined for centuries — the Mekong River connects them physically, their colonial histories overlap and their contemporary realities reflect a shared experience of the 20th century's most dramatic events. Travelling both countries as a single journey creates a narrative coherence that separate holidays cannot achieve. This fourteen-day tour begins at the greatest concentration of religious architecture on earth and ends in one of the most beautiful ancient towns in Asia — connected by the Mekong River, the streets of Saigon and a domestic flight north. Oliver guides the Cambodia section; Clara (Vietnamese-born, fluent in Vietnamese) takes over in Vietnam. The handover is seamless — it has been designed that way.

Who will plan your holiday

Oliver Reed & Clara Nguyen

Oliver (Cambodia) and Clara (Vietnam) have been guiding this combined tour together since 2022 — handing over in Phnom Penh over a farewell dinner that has become one of the tour's great evenings. Between them, they have led this particular itinerary more than sixty times. Oliver says: "Clara and I have spent a lot of time comparing the experience of the two countries from the inside. The Mekong is the thread that connects everything."

Two countries made sense together in a way they wouldn't have separately

We had considered booking the Cambodia and Vietnam tours separately on different trips. We are so glad we combined them. The handover dinner with Oliver and Clara was the moment we realised how intelligently this tour has been designed — the Mekong thread connecting the Cambodian and Vietnamese halves is not just a metaphor. Oliver's Angkor and Clara's Hoi An were both outstanding. Our absolute recommendation for anyone considering either country.

The most enriching fortnight of our lives

We have been travelling together for 38 years. This was the most enriching fortnight of all of them. Angkor Wat at sunrise gave us both a completely new sense of what human ambition is capable of. Clara's War Remnants Museum preparation was the finest thing a guide has done for us. Hoi An at night was everything we had seen in photographs and more. Two superb guides, four outstanding hotels and a journey we will talk about for years.

The best decision I made was combining both countries

I almost booked just the Cambodia tour. I am so glad I didn't. The contrast between Angkor and Hoi An — the largest temple complex on earth and the most beautifully preserved small town — is extraordinary and deeply moving. Oliver and Clara are both exceptional. The connection they have built between their sections of the tour is seamless.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How does the guide handover work between Oliver and Clara?

Oliver guides the full Cambodia section (Days 1–6). Clara joins for the farewell dinner in Phnom Penh (Day 6 evening) and takes over from Day 7 in Ho Chi Minh City. The handover has been carefully designed so you meet Clara before Oliver leaves — there is no gap between guides and no awkward transition. The three of you have dinner together in Phnom Penh, which guests consistently describe as one of the best evenings of the tour.

Do I need visas for both countries?

Yes — Cambodia requires an e-visa (approx. £30) and Vietnam requires an e-visa (approx. £20). Both are applied for online before travel. We provide step-by-step guidance for both applications. Apply at least two weeks before departure. Total visa cost: approximately £50 per person.

Is there a version of this tour that spends more time in Vietnam?

Yes — our 14-Day Classic Vietnam tour covers the full north-to-south journey including Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. If you want a deeper Vietnam experience after the Cambodia section, we can arrange an extension or a back-to-back booking.

Why does the Vietnam section focus on Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An rather than Hanoi?

The Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An combination is deliberately chosen for the Cambodia-Vietnam combination tour because it follows the geographical logic of the journey — north to south. Angkor is in the north of Cambodia, Phnom Penh in the south. Ho Chi Minh City is the natural continuation across the border. Hoi An adds the coastal and historic dimension. The Hanoi and Halong Bay experience is covered on our separate Vietnam tours.

Can the Cambodia section be shortened to allow more time in Vietnam?

Yes — we can shorten the Cambodia section to three nights (Siem Reap only) and extend Vietnam accordingly. However, we strongly recommend the full four nights in Cambodia — Oliver's three Angkor mornings are the core of the Cambodia experience. One or two mornings at Angkor is significantly less satisfying.

Is this tour more physically demanding than the single-country tours?

The combined tour has the same physical demands as each individual tour — the Angkor temple mornings at 4km and the Hoi An Ancient Town walks at 3.5km are the most active days. The overall pace is moderate rather than gentle, primarily because you cover more ground in 14 days. Our over-60s guests manage it very comfortably. Please tell us at booking about any mobility limitations and we will adjust accordingly.
