Sri Lanka, Thailand & Maldives: Temples, Tea & Tropical Beach
Three countries, one unforgettable arc — sacred temples, hill-country tea and a turquoise Maldivian finale

About this tour
Some journeys try to do too much; this one is shaped instead around a single, satisfying arc. You begin in Sri Lanka — the compact, generous island where ancient cities, sacred temples, tea-scented highlands and leopard country sit within a few hours of one another. You move on to Thailand, where Bangkok's gilded temples and the slow brown sweep of the Chao Phraya river offer a complete change of culture and rhythm. And you finish in the Maldives, on a single, beautiful island where the only decision left to make is beach villa or overwater, and the only sound is the lagoon. This is a culture-and-beach grand tour designed for the way mature travellers actually like to travel: rich in genuine highlights, but never a forced march. In Sri Lanka you climb Sigiriya (or take the gentler Pidurangala path, or simply enjoy the water gardens below), explore the cave temples of Dambulla, attend the evening puja at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth, ride the famous blue train into the tea country, and spend a morning watching elephants on a private jeep safari. In Bangkok you stand beneath the Emerald Buddha at the Grand Palace and glide past riverside temples by private long-tail boat. And then everything slows: a short flight south to the Maldives and four nights with nothing asked of you at all. Throughout, the logistics are entirely ours. Private air-conditioned vehicles and drivers in Sri Lanka and Thailand, internal flights with airport assistance, a dedicated specialist guide on the cultural legs, and step-free comfort wherever it can be arranged. You carry nothing, queue for nothing and decide nothing more taxing than what to order for dinner. For travellers who have always wanted to see Asia's temples and also long to end on a tropical beach — and who refuse to choose between the two — this is the journey.
“Isabella Chen leads the Sri Lanka leg and oversees the whole journey, handing you to our trusted Bangkok specialist for Thailand before your restful Maldivian finale. She has spent a decade pairing Sri Lanka's culture with the Indian Ocean's finest beaches.”

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Everything we wanted from one trip
“We could never agree on a holiday — Brian wanted temples and history, I wanted a beach. This gave us both and then some. Sri Lanka was a revelation: the elephants in Minneriya from the jeep, the blue train (sit on the right!), the tea factory hotel with its log fires. Bangkok's Grand Palace took our breath away. And then four nights in the Maldives to do absolutely nothing. Isabella thought of everything and never once rushed us.”

A grand tour that respects your knees
“At 71 I worried three countries would be exhausting. It wasn't. They were honest about Sigiriya being a steep climb, so I did the Pidurangala alternative instead and saw the rock beautifully without the metal staircases, then waited in comfort while my son went up. Private cars everywhere, someone always carrying the bags, and that wonderful rest day in the tea country. The Maldives finished it perfectly. Outstanding value.”

Three countries, beautifully joined up
“What struck us was how seamless it all felt — internal flights with someone meeting us each time, no queuing, no fuss. The temples of Kandy and Bangkok were the cultural highlights, the tea country the surprise we loved most, and Vilamendhoo in the Maldives had a reef you could snorkel straight off the beach. Roger saw a whale shark! A perfectly paced trip for our age.”

My solo trip of a lifetime at 68
“I travelled alone on the waived-supplement October departure and never once felt it. Isabella looked after me wonderfully through Sri Lanka, the Bangkok guide was just as kind, and the Maldives resort was an easy, friendly place to be on my own. The pacing was spot on — busy mornings, restful afternoons. I came home thrilled with myself and already planning the next one.”

Wonderful — and take the overwater upgrade
“A superb, varied journey we would recommend warmly. The cultural triangle and the train were everything we hoped, Bangkok was dazzling, and the Maldives a dream. My only tip: we upgraded to an overwater villa for the last two nights and wished we had done all four — so budget for it if you can. Otherwise faultless, and brilliantly organised across three countries.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
How demanding is this tour really — is it suitable for over-50s and over-60s?
It is a Moderate-rated journey designed specifically with mature travellers in mind. Walking is typically one to four kilometres a day on flat or gently sloping ground, all transfers are private and assisted, and active mornings are always followed by gentle afternoons. There is a deliberate rest day in the tea country and four wholly restful nights in the Maldives. The single demanding element is the optional Sigiriya climb, for which we always offer a gentler alternative. Most fit, mobile travellers in their 50s, 60s and 70s manage it very comfortably — and we tailor the pace to you.
Do I have to climb Sigiriya? What are the alternatives?
Not at all. Sigiriya is a steep ascent of around 1,200 uneven steps with exposed metal staircases and no step-free route to the summit, so it is not suitable for everyone. We offer two excellent alternatives. The neighbouring Pidurangala Rock is a shorter, less exposed climb that rewards you with a magnificent view of Sigiriya itself — many of our guests actually prefer it. Alternatively, you can explore Sigiriya's flat water gardens and museum at the base and then relax at the hotel while others ascend. You will not feel you have missed out whichever you choose.
What visas and entry requirements do I need for three countries?
Three arrangements, all straightforward, and we guide you through each. For Sri Lanka, UK citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), applied for online before departure. For Thailand, UK passport holders currently enter visa-free for tourism for short stays, though Thailand has introduced a digital arrival card (TDAC) to complete online shortly before travel — we send current instructions. For the Maldives, a free 30-day visa is issued on arrival with no advance application. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates with blank pages. We always confirm the latest requirements with your booking, as government rules can change.
How do the internal flights and transfers work between countries?
Seamlessly, and entirely arranged by us. You take two internal flights — Colombo to Bangkok (around three and a half hours) and Bangkok to Malé (around four and a half hours) — and you are met on both sides of each, with airport assistance and fast-track where available. In Sri Lanka and Bangkok you travel by private air-conditioned car with a driver; in the Maldives the resort transfer is by speedboat with crew assistance. You never carry your own luggage between legs or navigate an airport alone.
When is the best time to take this journey?
Our departures run October to March, which is the dry, calm season across all three destinations — warm sunshine, gentle seas and the most reliable weather for the Maldives and for Bangkok and Sri Lanka's west and hill country. December and January are the peak months with the most consistent sunshine; October and March are lovely, slightly quieter shoulder months. Our October departures also waive the single supplement, making them especially good value for solo travellers.
Can I add a beach or Chiang Mai stop, or extend the Maldives?
Yes — this is a private tour and very flexible. The most popular variation is a two-night Chiang Mai extension in northern Thailand (cooler air, old-city temples and an ethical elephant sanctuary) in place of a Bangkok leisure day. You can also add a Yala wildlife night in Sri Lanka, extend the Maldives finale, or upgrade to an overwater villa. Tell us your priorities when you enquire and we will design the ideal version for you.
What health precautions and vaccinations are advised?
No vaccinations are legally required for UK travellers, but a travel health clinic or your GP may recommend Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus as standard for Asia. Malaria risk is low in the areas we visit and most travellers do not take prophylaxis, but please discuss this with your doctor. We recommend a travel health consultation six to eight weeks before departure. Tap water is not safe to drink on the land journey, so bottled water is provided throughout, and your guide knows the nearest reputable private hospitals at every stage.
Is this journey suitable for solo travellers?
Very much so. A dedicated guide is with you on the cultural legs, all logistics are handled for you, and the gentle pacing makes it feel comfortable rather than daunting. The Maldives resort is a relaxed, friendly place to be on your own. Our two October departures waive the single supplement entirely; on other dates a modest supplement applies for sole occupancy. Many solo travellers in their 50s, 60s and 70s book this trip and tell us they felt thoroughly looked after throughout.
