About this tour

This is the most restorative journey we offer — a sixteen-day arc across the Indian Ocean built not around how much you can see, but around how well you can rest while still being moved by extraordinary places. It begins in Sri Lanka, with its colonial heritage and its wildlife: the tea-country town of Kandy, a leopard safari in the south, and the Dutch ramparts of Galle at sunset. Then a short flight carries you to Kerala — India's most languid and green corner — where you drift through the palm-lined backwaters on a private houseboat, slow down in a heritage home in old Fort Kochi, and give yourself over to the Ayurvedic traditions for which the Malabar coast is famous. Finally, the Maldives: a few last days of warm water, white sand and complete stillness. Priya, our South India and Sri Lanka specialist, built this itinerary for travellers who come home from most holidays needing another one. The pace is deliberately gentle, the treatments and the backwaters are woven through the middle, and the trip is sequenced so that each leg is calmer than the last. You will see leopards and lantern-lit ramparts and you will also, finally, rest.

Fitness & mobility

Pacing & accessibility

The gentlest of our grand tours, designed around restoration. Sri Lanka's wildlife and heritage are covered in short, unhurried drives; Kerala unfolds at the pace of a houseboat drifting through the backwaters, with time for Ayurvedic treatments; and the Maldives finale asks nothing at all. Two internal flights replace the long hops, and most days end early.

Walking

1–3km per day on flat, shaded ground. Galle Fort, Fort Cochin and the retreats are all level. The optional Sigiriya climb is the only strenuous activity and is easily skipped.

Transport

Private air-conditioned car with driver and guide through Sri Lanka and Kerala, two internal flights, a private houseboat, and a 25-minute speedboat to the Maldives resort.

Altitude

Kandy sits at around 500m; everything else — the Cultural Triangle, Galle, the Kerala coast and backwaters, and the Maldives — is at or near sea level. No altitude concerns anywhere.

Heat / Climate

Departures run October to March, the cool, dry season. Sri Lanka and Kerala are warm and humid but tempered by sea and lake breezes; the Maldives is consistently warm and calm.

We came home genuinely rested for once

Most holidays leave us needing a week to recover. This one did the opposite. The houseboat night on the backwaters was pure magic — drifting past village life with a wonderful cook on board — and the Ayurvedic treatments at Marari were the real thing, not a hotel-spa gimmick. Sri Lanka gave us the leopards and the heritage at the start, and the Maldives finished it perfectly. Priya's pacing was faultless.

The most restorative trip I have ever taken

As a solo traveller of 70 I wanted something gentle but not dull, and this was exactly it. The CGH Earth properties in Kerala were a revelation — eco-retreats with real soul. I did a few Ayurvedic treatments and some morning yoga, walked the beach at Marari, and felt years younger by the Maldives. The single supplement was waived on my February departure, which made it very fair value.

Three very different kinds of calm

What struck us was how each leg had its own sort of peace — the hill-country and coast of Sri Lanka, the green stillness of the Kerala backwaters, and then the simple warmth of the Maldives. The pace was deliberately slow and we loved it. The houseboat and the heritage hotel in Fort Cochin were highlights. A beautifully judged itinerary for those of us no longer wanting to rush.

Before you go

Practical information

Visa requirements

Sri Lanka ETA and India e-Visa are both required, applied for online before travel. The Maldives issues a free 30-day visa on arrival. We provide full guidance for both applications on booking.

Currency

Sri Lankan Rupee, Indian Rupee and US Dollar (widely used in the Maldives). Cards are accepted in hotels and retreats; carry some cash for markets, treatments and tips. ATMs are plentiful in both Sri Lanka and Kerala.

Tipping

Tipping is customary. Around £6–10 per day for your guide and driver in each country is appreciated; small tips for the houseboat crew, safari jeep driver and spa therapists. Maldives resort staff: a few dollars per day or a lump sum at the end. Your guides will advise.

Electricity

Sri Lanka and India use 230V; Sri Lanka uses the UK three-pin (Type G), India uses Type D/M round-pin — a universal adapter covers both. The Maldives uses 230V with Type G/D sockets. Bring a universal adapter.

Health & vaccinations

No mandatory vaccinations for UK travellers, but routine jabs plus Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly advised; consult your GP or travel clinic 6–8 weeks ahead. Anti-malarials are not generally needed for this itinerary but check current advice. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is essential.

Flights

International flights are not included. We arrange flights from your local UK airport into Colombo and home from Malé, plus the two internal flights (Colombo–Kochi and Kochi–Malé) which are included in the tour.

Local transport

Private air-conditioned vehicle with driver and English-speaking guide throughout Sri Lanka and Kerala. Two internal flights link the legs. A private kettuvallam houseboat for one night, and a 25-minute shared speedboat to the Maldives resort — no seaplane required.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What makes this a "wellness" itinerary rather than a normal tour?

Three things. First, the pace: short drives, early finishes and real downtime built into every leg. Second, the Ayurvedic element — Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, and both the Coconut Lagoon and Marari Beach retreats have respected centres where you can take genuine treatments, consultations and yoga rather than a token hotel massage. Third, the sequencing: the trip is deliberately structured so each leg is calmer than the last, ending in the complete stillness of the Maldives. It is designed for travellers who want to come home rested.

Do I have to take the Ayurvedic treatments?

Not at all — they are entirely optional. The retreats simply make them easy to arrange if you wish, from a single herbal massage to a structured multi-day programme (see add-ons). If Ayurveda isn't for you, the same days work beautifully as pure relaxation: the lakeside pool at Kumarakom, the beach and gardens at Marari, or simply a book in the shade.

What is the houseboat night actually like?

It is one of the highlights of the trip. You have a private, traditional palm-thatched kettuvallam — chartered just for your party — with an en-suite cabin, an open deck and your own cook, who prepares fresh Keralan meals on board. You drift through narrow canals and broad lakes past paddy fields, churches and village life, moor for the night in a quiet backwater, and wake to mist on the water. It is gentle, private and utterly peaceful. Do let us know of any mobility concerns, as boarding involves a step onto the deck.

Do I need visas for Sri Lanka and India?

Yes. Sri Lanka requires an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) and India requires an e-Visa, both applied for online before travel. The Maldives grants a free 30-day visa on arrival, so nothing is needed in advance there. We send full, step-by-step guidance for both the Sri Lanka ETA and the India e-Visa once you book.

Is there much wildlife, or is it mainly relaxation?

There is genuine wildlife at the start. The Minneriya / Kaudulla jeep safari brings you among wild elephants gathering at the reservoir — often dozens at once — and you can add a leopard safari at Yala as an extension. Kerala's Kumarakom is a noted bird sanctuary. After that, the emphasis shifts to heritage and relaxation, so you get the best of both: a real wildlife experience early on, then restoration. If you want more safari, the Yala extension is the way to add it.
