About this tour

Some journeys are greater than the sum of their parts. This is one of them. In eighteen days you travel from the marble splendour of Mughal India, across the palm-fringed jungles and tea hills of Sri Lanka, to the impossibly blue lagoons of the Maldives — three of the Indian Ocean's defining experiences, arranged so that each one heightens the next. You begin in Delhi and the Golden Triangle: the Taj Mahal at dawn, the abandoned Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri, the pink palaces and bazaars of Jaipur. Then a short flight carries you to Colombo and the heart of Sri Lanka — the lion-rock fortress of Sigiriya, the sacred city of Kandy, wild elephants at Minneriya, and the colonial ramparts of Galle. Finally, a flight to Malé and the Maldives, where your last days dissolve into white sand, warm water and nothing more demanding than choosing when to swim. Sophie, our multi-centre specialist, has built this itinerary over many years of running the three-country arc. Every transfer is private, every hotel chosen for comfort and character rather than name alone, and the whole journey is sequenced so that the most active days come first and the most restful come last — exactly as a great holiday should be.

Your journey

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrive Delhi

Delhi, India

Your flight arrives in Delhi, where our representative meets you in Arrivals and transfers you privately to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to rest and adjust after the flight. This evening, an unhurried welcome dinner where Sophie's India colleague talks you through the days ahead.

Meals: DWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: The Piccadily New Delhi ★★★★
Specialist tip: Don't try to do anything on arrival day beyond a gentle dinner. India rewards travellers who arrive rested.
2

Old & New Delhi

Delhi, India

A full but gently paced day in the capital. Old Delhi's Jama Masjid and a cycle-rickshaw ride through the Chandni Chowk bazaar in the morning; the calm of Humayun's Tomb and a drive past the colonial avenues of New Delhi in the afternoon, with the India Gate and the Presidential Palace.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: The Piccadily New Delhi ★★★★
Accessibility: The cycle-rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk is optional; the vehicle can meet you at the far end if you prefer to skip the busiest lanes.
3

Delhi to Agra — Taj Mahal at Sunset

Agra, India

A morning drive on the Yamuna Expressway to Agra (about 3.5 hours). After lunch and check-in, your first sight of the Taj Mahal in the soft light of late afternoon — the marble shifting from white to honey to rose as the sun lowers. Your guide explains the love story and the astonishing craftsmanship behind it.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Hotel Clarks Shiraz, Agra ★★★★
Specialist tip: Seeing the Taj at sunset on arrival day and again at sunrise the next morning gives you the monument in two completely different lights — most visitors only manage one.
4

Taj at Dawn, Agra Fort & on to Jaipur

Jaipur, India

An early return to the Taj Mahal for sunrise, when the crowds are thin and the marble glows. After breakfast, the great red-sandstone Agra Fort, then the drive to Jaipur via the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri — the perfectly preserved Mughal capital abandoned after just fourteen years. Arrive in Jaipur in the early evening.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Pearl Palace Heritage, Jaipur ★★★
Specialist tip: The Pearl Palace Heritage is a small, family-run gem — every room individually themed, hand-painted walls, and a rooftop restaurant. It punches far above its 3-star rating and the hosts are wonderful.
5

Jaipur — Amber Fort & the Pink City

Jaipur, India

The hilltop Amber Fort in the morning, with its mirror palace and elephant-gate courtyards. In the afternoon, the Pink City itself: the City Palace, the astronomical instruments of the Jantar Mantar, and the honeycomb facade of the Hawa Mahal. Time in the bazaars for block-printed textiles and gemstones.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Pearl Palace Heritage, Jaipur ★★★
6

Fly Delhi to Colombo

Colombo, Sri Lanka

A morning drive back to Delhi airport and a flight south to Colombo (via a short connection). Our Sri Lanka representative meets you on arrival and transfers you to your Colombo hotel. The evening is free to rest after the travel day.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Cinnamon Grand Colombo ★★★★
7

Colombo to the Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

A scenic drive north into Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, stopping at the cave temples of Dambulla — five caves of golden Buddhas and ceiling frescoes dating back two millennia. Continue to your resort near Sigiriya, set among paddy fields and jungle.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Aliya Resort & Spa, Sigiriya ★★★★
Specialist tip: Aliya's infinity pool frames Sigiriya Rock in the distance — a sundowner there after the drive is one of the trip's quiet highlights.
8

Sigiriya Rock & Minneriya Elephants

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

An early climb of Sigiriya — the fifth-century "Lion Rock" fortress, with its frescoes of celestial maidens and water gardens, before the heat of the day. In the afternoon, a jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park, where wild elephants gather in herds of dozens around the receding reservoir — one of Asia's great wildlife spectacles.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Aliya Resort & Spa, Sigiriya ★★★★
Specialist tip: The "Gathering" at Minneriya peaks from June to September but elephants are present year-round; your guide chooses whichever park has the best sightings on the day.
Accessibility: Sigiriya involves roughly 1,200 steps. Those who prefer not to climb can explore the water gardens and visit the nearby, far gentler Pidurangala viewpoint or the Sigiriya museum instead — your guide will arrange it.
9

Sigiriya to Kandy

Kandy, Sri Lanka

A drive south to Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, stopping at a spice garden and the cave-painted monasteries en route. In Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — Sri Lanka's holiest Buddhist shrine — and an evening of traditional Kandyan dancing and drumming.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Earl's Regency, Kandy ★★★★
10

Kandy — Botanical Gardens & Lake

Kandy, Sri Lanka

A gentler day. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, with their avenue of giant bamboo and orchid house, in the morning. A walk around Kandy Lake and time in the town's markets in the afternoon. The hotel's riverside setting invites an early evening at rest.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Earl's Regency, Kandy ★★★★
11

Kandy to Galle — the Southern Coast

Galle, Sri Lanka

A long but beautiful drive down out of the hills to the south coast and the walled town of Galle. After checking in, a stroll along the seventeenth-century Dutch ramparts as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean — the lighthouse, the old churches and the cobbled lanes of the fort glowing in the evening light.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Amari Galle, Sri Lanka ★★★★
Specialist tip: Amari Galle sits right on the ocean with a vast pool deck — a perfect decompression point between the touring of Sri Lanka and the rest of the Maldives.
12

Galle Fort & Coast at Leisure

Galle, Sri Lanka

A free morning to explore Galle Fort's galleries, jewellers and cafés at your own pace, or simply enjoy the hotel. An optional afternoon visit to a sea-turtle hatchery or a tea estate can be arranged. A gentle day before the journey to the Maldives.

Meals: BWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Amari Galle, Sri Lanka ★★★★
13

Fly to the Maldives

North Malé Atoll, Maldives

A morning transfer to Colombo airport and a short flight to Malé. On arrival, a scenic speedboat transfer across the lagoon to your island resort. The rest of the day is yours — the first toes in the warm shallows, the first swim, the first sunset from the beach.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Bandos Maldives ★★★★
Specialist tip: Bandos is one of the Maldives' original islands — a genuine house reef just metres from the beach, so the snorkelling starts the moment you step off the sand. A 25-minute speedboat from the airport means no costly seaplane and no long transfer.
14

Maldives at Leisure

North Malé Atoll, Maldives

A full free day on the island. Snorkel the house reef, swim, read in the shade of a palm, or take an optional sunset dolphin cruise. The pace is entirely your own.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Bandos Maldives ★★★★
15

Maldives at Leisure

North Malé Atoll, Maldives

Another unstructured day in the lagoon. Optional diving, a spa treatment over the water, or simply the rhythm of swim, shade and sea. Half-board dining each evening.

Maldives at Leisure

North Malé Atoll, Maldives

Your fourth day in the Maldives. An optional excursion to a sandbank picnic or a neighbouring local island can be arranged, or continue to do gloriously little.

Meals: B, DWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Bandos Maldives ★★★★

Fitness & mobility

Pacing & accessibility

A three-week journey paced for comfort across three countries. India's Golden Triangle is covered by private car with unhurried sightseeing and rest in the afternoons. Sri Lanka's hill country and cultural triangle are spread across leisurely drives with frequent stops. The Maldives finale is pure rest. Two internal flights replace long road days, and the single beach-resort week needs no packing or moving at all.

Walking

2–4km on touring days, almost all on flat ground except the optional Sigiriya climb (around 1,200 steps, fully skippable). The Maldives week involves no structured walking at all.

Transport

Private air-conditioned car with driver and guide throughout India and Sri Lanka. Two internal flights. A 25-minute speedboat to the Maldives resort — no seaplane.

Altitude

Delhi (216m), Agra (171m), Jaipur (431m), Sri Lanka's hill country around Kandy (500m) and the Maldives at sea level. No altitude concerns anywhere on the itinerary.

Heat / Climate

Departures run October to March, the coolest and driest window across all three countries. India mornings are crisp; Sri Lanka and the Maldives are warm but tempered by sea breezes.

Guest reviews

Three holidays in one — and the order was perfect

We had always wanted to see the Taj Mahal and we had always wanted the Maldives, and Sophie put them together with Sri Lanka in the middle in a way that just flowed. By the time we reached the Maldives we were ready to do absolutely nothing, which is exactly what the last week was for. The Pearl Palace in Jaipur was the surprise of the trip — tiny, beautiful and so welcoming. Wonderful value for what it was.

The elephants at Minneriya brought me to tears

I travelled as a solo guest on the February departure with the single supplement waived, which made it affordable. The whole thing was seamless — private cars, guides who clearly loved their countries, and not once did I feel rushed. Dozens of wild elephants at the reservoir in the late afternoon light is a memory I will keep forever. The Maldives finish was the cherry on top.

Eighteen days that never once felt long

Three countries in three weeks sounds exhausting and it simply was not, because the flights took the strain out of the longest hops and the pace eased as we went. Sigiriya was a genuine achievement for us at 64 and 66 — and the guide had a gentler alternative ready had we needed it. Galle was unexpectedly lovely. Highly recommended.

Before you go

Practical information

Visa requirements

India e-Visa (apply online before travel) and Sri Lanka ETA (online) are both required. The Maldives issues a free 30-day visa on arrival. We provide full guidance for both applications on booking.

Currency

Indian Rupee, Sri Lankan Rupee and US Dollar (widely used in the Maldives). Cards are accepted in hotels throughout; carry some cash for markets and tips. ATMs are plentiful in India and Sri Lanka.

Tipping

Tipping is customary. For your India guide and driver, around £8–10 per day each is appreciated; in Sri Lanka, similar. Maldives resort staff: a few dollars per day for housekeeping and dining staff, or a lump sum at the end. Your guides will advise.

Electricity

India and Sri Lanka use 230V; Sri Lanka uses the UK three-pin (Type G) plug, while India uses Type D/M round-pin — a universal adapter covers both. The Maldives uses 230V with Type G/D sockets. Bring a universal adapter.

Health & vaccinations

No mandatory vaccinations for UK travellers, but routine jabs plus Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly advised; consult your GP or a travel clinic 6–8 weeks ahead. Anti-malarials are not generally needed for this itinerary but check current advice. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is essential.

Flights

International flights are not included. We arrange flights from your local UK airport into Delhi and home from Malé, plus the two internal flights (Delhi–Colombo and Colombo–Malé) which are included in the tour.

Local transport

Private air-conditioned vehicle with driver and English-speaking guide throughout India and Sri Lanka. Two internal flights link the countries. A 25-minute shared speedboat connects Malé airport with the Maldives resort — no seaplane required.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why is this priced under £2,000 when it covers three countries?

The price is land-only — it excludes your international flights, which we arrange separately from your local UK airport. By choosing a considered mix of excellent 4-star and characterful 3-star hotels rather than five-star throughout, and by using a fast speedboat rather than a seaplane in the Maldives, we keep the land cost below £2,000 without compromising on comfort or the quality of the experience. You can upgrade individual elements — such as an overwater villa in the Maldives — if you wish.

Do I need separate visas for India and Sri Lanka?

Yes. India requires an e-Visa, applied for online before travel, and Sri Lanka requires an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), also a simple online application. The Maldives grants a free 30-day visa on arrival to all visitors — nothing needs to be arranged in advance. We send full, step-by-step guidance for both the India e-Visa and the Sri Lanka ETA once you book.

Isn't moving between three countries in 18 days tiring?

It is less tiring than it sounds, because the itinerary is built around it. The two longest hops — Delhi to Colombo and Colombo to Malé — are covered by flight, not road. The most active sightseeing comes first, while you are freshest, and the trip winds down into five completely unstructured days in the Maldives. Every transfer in India and Sri Lanka is by private car, so you travel at your own pace with rest stops whenever you need them.

Can I climb Sigiriya, and what if I can't manage it?

Sigiriya involves around 1,200 steps, including some steep metal staircases. Many guests in their fifties and sixties complete it at a steady pace, taking regular breaks. If you would rather not, your guide will arrange a gentler alternative — the beautiful water gardens at the base, the nearby Pidurangala viewpoint, or the Sigiriya museum — so you miss nothing of the experience. It is entirely your choice on the day.

How much beach time do I actually get in the Maldives?

Five nights — a genuine, restful Maldives stay rather than a token two-night add-on. You arrive on day 13 and have four full, unstructured days on the island before flying home on day 18. The resort offers snorkelling straight off the beach, a dive centre, an over-water spa and optional excursions such as dolphin cruises and sandbank picnics, but the days are entirely yours to fill or to do nothing at all.
