Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos: The Indochina Trail
Three ancient civilisations along the old Indochina trail — the lanterns of Hoi An, the temples of Angkor, and the saffron dawn of Luang Prabang

About this tour
This is the Indochina trail done as it should be: not a dash between airports, but an unhurried passage through three of Southeast Asia's great civilisations, each with its own temples, its own cuisine, and its own utterly distinct character. You begin in Vietnam — the lake-and-boulevard charm of Hanoi, the emerald karsts of Halong Bay, and the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An, where tailors and silk shops line streets unchanged for centuries. Then to Cambodia and the heart of the trip: Angkor, the largest religious monument on earth, explored across two cool mornings with a specialist who makes its thousand-year story intelligible. Finally to Laos and Luang Prabang — the most serene town in Southeast Asia, where saffron-robed monks process through the streets at dawn and the Mekong slides past colonial villas and golden-roofed temples. There is no beach on this itinerary, and that is the point. This is a journey for the curious — for travellers who want to understand what they are looking at, who would rather watch the alms-giving at sunrise than lie by a pool. David, our Indochina specialist, has walked these temples for fifteen years, and his itinerary is paced so that the history never becomes a forced march.

Born in Hue and now based between Hanoi and Siem Reap, David has spent fifteen years guiding travellers along the Indochina trail. He studied Southeast Asian history and is as fluent in the iconography of Angkor as he is in the colonial story of Hanoi and the Buddhist traditions of Laos. Calm, scholarly and endlessly patient, he is known for pacing his groups gently and for the small touches — the best bowl of pho, the quietest corner of a temple, the right moment to watch the alms-giving. He works with long-trusted local partners in each country.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
For the history lover, this is the trip
“We are not beach people, and so a culture-only itinerary across these three countries was exactly what we wanted. David's knowledge of Angkor turned a pile of beautiful stones into a comprehensible empire. Splitting the temples across two mornings was a masterstroke — we never felt the heat or the fatigue we had feared. Luang Prabang at the end was the most peaceful place either of us has ever been.”

Three countries, beautifully linked by flights
“What sold me was that the long journeys are all flights rather than endless coach days. As a solo traveller of 67 I felt entirely looked after at every handover between countries. The alms-giving in Luang Prabang at dawn moved me to silence. Hoi An's lanterns, Angkor at sunrise, the monks at first light — a procession of unforgettable mornings.”

Wonderful itinerary, superb guiding
“A richly rewarding two weeks. The boutique hotels were a lovely surprise — particularly the riverside one in Hoi An and the hilltop place in Luang Prabang. Our only note is that the connection through to Siem Reap made for a longish travel day, but David had it all organised and we were met at every step. We would do it again tomorrow.”

Before you go
Practical information
Visa requirements
Vietnam e-Visa (apply online in advance), Cambodia e-Visa or visa on arrival, and Laos visa on arrival / eVisa are all required. We provide full guidance for each on booking.
Currency
Vietnamese Dong, Cambodian Riel (US Dollars widely used) and Lao Kip. US Dollars are useful across all three; cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants. Carry small notes for markets and tips.
Tipping
Tipping is customary and appreciated. Around £6–10 per day for your guide and a little less for drivers in each country is a good benchmark; small tips for boat crews and hotel staff. Your guides will advise on local norms.
Electricity
220–230V across all three countries. Sockets are typically Type A/C/G — a universal adapter is recommended as plug types vary between hotels.
Health & vaccinations
No mandatory vaccinations for UK travellers, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid and routine jabs are commonly advised; consult your GP or travel clinic 6–8 weeks ahead. Anti-malarial advice varies by area and season — check current guidance. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is essential.
Flights
International flights are not included. We arrange flights from your local UK airport into Hanoi and home from Luang Prabang, plus the three internal flights (Hanoi–Danang, Danang–Siem Reap, Siem Reap–Luang Prabang) which are included in the tour.
Local transport
Private air-conditioned vehicle with driver and English-speaking guide in each country. Three internal flights link the three legs. Calm, seated river cruises on the Tonlé Sap and the Mekong. Cyclo and boat experiences are gentle and optional.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
There's no beach on this tour — is that deliberate?
Entirely. This itinerary is designed for travellers who are drawn to history and culture rather than a beach holiday. Every day is built around the temples, towns and rivers of three remarkable civilisations. If you would like to add some beach time, we can extend the trip with a few nights on the Vietnamese coast or in Cambodia — just ask — but as it stands this is a pure-culture journey for the curious.
How demanding is the temple sightseeing at Angkor?
We deliberately split Angkor across two cool sessions — a sunrise-or-early visit to Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, and a separate morning for Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei — rather than the single exhausting day many operators cram in. Walking is 3–4km on those days, mostly on flat causeways and courtyards. The very steep upper terrace of Angkor Wat is optional, and your guide tailors the route to your mobility. Most guests in their fifties and sixties find it comfortable at this pace.
What visas do I need for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos?
Vietnam requires an e-Visa applied for online in advance. Cambodia offers an e-Visa (recommended) or visa on arrival. Laos offers a visa on arrival or an eVisa. All three are straightforward, and we send full step-by-step guidance once you book, including which to arrange before travel and which can be done at the airport.
Can the trip be arranged as a Mekong cruise instead of fly-drive?
Yes, in part. The standard itinerary links the three countries by short internal flights, which is the quickest and most comfortable arrangement. If you would prefer a river element, we offer a Mekong cruise upgrade between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh in place of the Tonlé Sap day trip (see add-ons). A full Mekong cruise itinerary can also be designed on a tailor-made basis — talk to us and we will build it around you.
Is the early start for the Luang Prabang alms-giving compulsory?
Not at all. The tak bat alms procession takes place at dawn and is entirely optional — many guests find it one of the most moving moments of the trip, but it means a 5am start, and there is no obligation. If you prefer to sleep, you lose nothing else from the day. Should you go, your guide briefs you fully on how to observe respectfully and at a distance.
