About this tour

This is the grand tour for those who want it all in twelve days — wildlife, nature and city, woven together so that the wild heart of Borneo sits between two of Asia's most characterful destinations. You begin in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur, where the Petronas Towers soar above colonial mosques and bustling markets, and Penang, the island whose George Town is a UNESCO-listed feast of Straits-Chinese shophouses, clan temples and the finest street food in Asia. Then a flight across the South China Sea to Borneo, and the journey's wild heart: the orangutans of Sepilok, the comical proboscis monkeys of the Kinabatangan River, and a rainforest river cruise alive with hornbills, macaques and pygmy elephants. Finally, Singapore — the gleaming, garden-city send-off, with its Supertrees, its hawker centres and its colonial grandeur. Rebecca, our Malaysia and Borneo specialist, has built this itinerary to balance the wildlife with comfort. The Borneo leg is paced around dawn and dusk wildlife viewing — when the animals are active and the heat is bearable — and the river safaris are seated and gentle. At under £1,400 land-only it is the most accessible of our grand tours, and one of the most rewarding for anyone who loves the natural world.

Fitness & mobility

Internal flights connect every leg, so there are no long road days.

Walking

1.5–4km per day, mostly flat. The Batu Caves steps and Penang Hill are optional or funicular-assisted. Borneo wildlife is seen from seated boats and short, flat boardwalks rather than jungle treks.

Transport

Private air-conditioned vehicles with guides for city touring, four internal flights linking the legs, and seated wildlife river cruises in Borneo (silent electric boats at Sukau). Boarding boats involves a step, with crew assistance.

Altitude

The entire itinerary is at or near sea level, apart from the optional Penang Hill funicular (around 800m). No altitude concerns for any guest.

Heat / Climate

Borneo and Malaysia are equatorial — warm and humid year-round, with occasional showers. Departures favour the drier months; wildlife viewing is timed for cooler dawn and dusk, with rest in the midday heat. Singapore is air-conditioned comfort.

The orangutans and proboscis monkeys exceeded every hope

We have wanted to see wild orangutans for years and Borneo delivered beyond our dreams — Sepilok up close, then genuinely wild ones along the Kinabatangan, plus proboscis monkeys, hornbills and even a glimpse of pygmy elephants. The silent electric boats at Sukau let us drift right up to the wildlife. Penang's food was a joy and Singapore the perfect comfortable finish. Rebecca's knowledge was extraordinary.

Wildlife without the gruelling trekking I feared

At 69 I worried Borneo would mean hard jungle hikes, but it was nothing of the sort — the wildlife is seen from comfortable seated boats and short boardwalks, timed for the cool early mornings. The lodge on the river was a genuine highlight, falling asleep to the sound of the forest. Add in the towers of KL, Penang's shophouses and Singapore's gardens and it was wonderfully varied. Superb value, too.

Nature, food and city in perfect balance

What a beautifully judged trip. Borneo was the wild heart we came for, but the Penang food culture and the polish of Singapore framed it perfectly. The internal flights meant no exhausting road days. The heritage hotel in George Town and the rainforest lodge were both memorable in completely different ways. We came home full of stories.

Before you go

Practical information

Visa requirements

No advance visa required for UK citizens: Malaysia (up to 90 days, free MDAC digital arrival card needed before travel) and Singapore (up to 90 days). Passport valid for 6+ months required. Sabah/Borneo has a separate internal immigration check. We explain it all on booking.

Currency

Malaysian Ringgit and Singapore Dollar. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels; carry some cash for markets, the Borneo lodges and tips. ATMs are plentiful in the cities, fewer in remote Borneo, so draw cash before the river leg.

Tipping

Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated. A little for city guides and drivers; for the Borneo lodge naturalists and boat crews, a few ringgit per day is warmly received. Singapore restaurants usually include a service charge. Your guides will advise.

Electricity

Both Malaysia and Singapore use 230V with the UK three-pin (Type G) plug — no adapter needed for UK travellers. Power can be more limited at the rainforest lodges, with charging in communal areas or on a generator schedule.

Health & vaccinations

No mandatory vaccinations for UK travellers, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid and routine jabs are commonly advised; consult your GP or travel clinic 6–8 weeks ahead. Malaria risk on the Kinabatangan is low but present — discuss anti-malarials and bring good insect repellent. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is essential.

Flights

International flights are not included. We arrange flights from your local UK airport into Kuala Lumpur and home from Singapore, plus the four internal flights (KL–Penang, Penang–Sandakan, Sandakan–Kota Kinabalu, Kota Kinabalu–Singapore) which are included in the tour.

Local transport

Private air-conditioned vehicles with English-speaking guides for city touring, four internal flights linking the legs, and seated wildlife river cruises in Borneo (silent electric boats at Sukau). Boarding the river boats involves a step from the jetty with crew assistance.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How physically demanding is the Borneo wildlife viewing?

Far less than most people expect. This is not a jungle-trekking itinerary. The wildlife on the Kinabatangan is seen from comfortable, seated river boats — at Sukau they use silent electric motors so you drift right up to the animals — and at Sepilok the orangutans are viewed from flat boardwalks. There are optional short boardwalk walks for those who want them, but nothing strenuous. The main physical step is boarding the boats from the jetty, where the crew assist. Most guests in their sixties and seventies find it very comfortable.

Am I guaranteed to see orangutans?

Sepilok is the most reliable place in the world to see orangutans — the rehabilitation centre's feeding platforms attract them daily, so sightings there are all but certain (though, as a genuine rehabilitation site returning them to the wild, never staged). Along the Kinabatangan you have an excellent chance of seeing wild orangutans, and you are very likely to see proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills and other wildlife. As with all wild-animal viewing nothing can be promised, but the combination of Sepilok plus multiple river cruises gives you the best possible odds.

Do I need a visa for Malaysia or Singapore?

For UK citizens, neither Malaysia nor Singapore requires a visa in advance for a tourist stay of this length — Malaysia grants up to 90 days and Singapore up to 90 days visa-free. You will need a valid passport with at least six months' validity, and Malaysia requires a free online Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) shortly before travel, which we explain on booking. Note that Sabah (Borneo) has its own immigration check on arrival from the Malaysian mainland — straightforward and handled by your guide.

Why is this the cheapest of your grand tours?

A few reasons. It is the shortest of the five at twelve days; it covers two countries rather than three (Borneo is part of Malaysia); and the wildlife lodges, while comfortable and characterful, are sensibly priced 3-star properties rather than luxury camps. The price is land-only — your international flights are arranged separately. None of this compromises the experience: you still see the orangutans, cruise the Kinabatangan from an award-winning lodge, eat your way through Penang and finish in style in Singapore.

When is the best time to go for wildlife?

Borneo is rewarding year-round, but our departures favour the drier months (roughly October to April, avoiding the wettest spells), when river conditions and wildlife viewing are at their best. Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk, which is exactly when the river cruises are scheduled. The Kinabatangan's narrowing dry-season channels also concentrate the animals near the water, improving sightings. Your naturalist guide knows the river intimately and positions every cruise for the best chance.
