About this tour

Nepal sits at the roof of the world, its northern horizon dominated by eight of the ten highest mountains on earth — and yet the country's greatest rewards for most visitors come not from altitude but from proximity: proximity to living religious traditions unchanged for centuries, to jungle ecosystems harbouring tigers and one-horned rhinos, and to the serene beauty of Himalayan lakes where snow peaks are reflected in still water at dawn. This ten-day private journey moves through Nepal's three most rewarding regions. Kathmandu's UNESCO-listed Durbar Squares — the ancient royal palace complexes of the old kingdom — along with the golden stupa of Boudhanath (the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet) and the sacred burning ghats of Pashupatinath, provide an introduction to the country's extraordinary religious pluralism: Hindu temples and Buddhist shrines standing side by side, incense from both mingling in the same mountain air. Pokhara, Nepal's second city and the gateway to the Annapurna range, offers three days of extraordinary mountain scenery without any altitude. Phewa Lake in the early morning — the white snowfields of Annapurna and Machapuchare (the Fishtail) reflected in perfect stillness — is one of the defining images of Asia. And Chitwan National Park, in the subtropical Terai lowlands, provides a completely different Nepal: elephant-back safaris through sal forest, canoe rides on the Rapti River, and the extraordinary sight of the one-horned Indian rhinoceros browsing in the long grass fifty metres away. Arjun Gurung, Kathmandu-born and deeply knowledgeable in both Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism, gives every temple visit the depth it deserves.

Arjun Gurung was born in Kathmandu and has guided Nepal's sacred sites for twelve years. His master's degree in Comparative Religion from Tribhuvan University makes him one of the most academically qualified guides in Nepal. His warmth and humour make every group feel at ease.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Entirely private — your vehicle, your guide, your pace, your questions
  • Arjun's knowledge of Nepali Hindu and Buddhist iconography transforms temple visits from sightseeing into genuine understanding

  • Dwarika's Hotel in Kathmandu is the finest heritage hotel in Nepal, with exceptional dining and spa
  • Nepal is one of the most welcoming and low-crime travel destinations in Asia

Arrival in Kathmandu

Kathmandu

Arjun meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport. The drive to Dwarika's Hotel passes through the chaotic, brilliant energy of Kathmandu — rickshaws and gods coexisting at every junction. The hotel itself is a masterpiece of Newar architecture: ancient carved windows, peacock-screened courtyards and a museum that contextualises everything you'll see in the days ahead. First evening: the hotel's Krishnarpan restaurant for a multi-course Nepali royal feast.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Dwarika's Hotel, Kathmandu ★★★★★

Kathmandu: Boudhanath & Pashupatinath

Kathmandu

A morning at Boudhanath — the great Tibetan Buddhist stupa, one of the largest in the world, its all-seeing eyes watching the circumambulating pilgrims below. Arjun explains the Tibetan cosmology of the stupa's layered symbolism — the dome as the world, the eyes as enlightened awareness, the 13 rings as the stages to nirvana — with the kind of clarity that makes the symbolism genuinely lucid. Afternoon at Pashupatinath — the sacred Hindu cremation temple on the Bagmati River, where sacred bulls wander between shrines and the burning ghats offer one of the most candid meditations on mortality available anywhere. Evening: Thamel district for shopping and dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Dwarika's Hotel, Kathmandu ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Pashupatinath burning ghats require sensitivity — these are real cremations, real families in grief. I always brief guests on where to stand, how to photograph respectfully (or not), and what you are witnessing spiritually. Approached with the right frame of mind, it is one of the most profound experiences in Nepal.
3

Swayambhunath & Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu

The 365 steps to Swayambhunath — the Monkey Temple on its hill above Kathmandu — in the cool morning, with views over the Kathmandu Valley in every direction from the summit. (Vehicle access to the hilltop is available for those who prefer not to climb.) Then Kathmandu Durbar Square — the UNESCO-listed palace complex of the medieval Malla kings, its carved temples and courtyards one of the greatest concentrations of Newar art and architecture in the world.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3.5 kmHotel: Dwarika's Hotel, Kathmandu ★★★★★
Accessibility: Swayambhunath's 365 steps can be bypassed by vehicle access to the hilltop — the stupa and views are identical. Arjun uses vehicle access for guests who prefer it. Kathmandu Durbar Square is on flat ground.
4

Patan — Drive to Pokhara

Pokhara

A morning in Patan (Lalitpur) — the most sophisticated of the three Kathmandu Valley kingdoms, its Durbar Square arguably the most beautiful concentration of mediaeval Newar architecture in existence and its old city an extraordinary maze of courtyard shrines. Then a five-hour scenic mountain drive to Pokhara, arriving as the afternoon light softens on the Annapurna range. Check in to the Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge, perched on a ridge with 270-degree Himalayan views.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge ★★★★★
5

Pokhara: Phewa Lake & Mountain Views

Pokhara

A sunrise boating session on Phewa Lake — rowing across the still water as the Annapurna massif appears above the mist, Machapuchare's perfect pyramid reflected below. Arjun's briefing on the eight-thousanders visible from Pokhara (Annapurna I, II, III, IV; Dhaulagiri; Manaslu) gives each peak an identity and a story. Afternoon visit to the World Peace Pagoda on its lakeside hill — the views of both the lake and the mountains from the pagoda terrace are exceptional.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The boat needs to be on the lake before 6am to catch the reflection at its most perfect — before the morning breeze ripples the surface. I wake everyone gently and it is always worth the early alarm.
6

Pokhara: Valley Exploration

Pokhara

A day exploring the Pokhara Valley: the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave (a sacred cave shrine leading to the dramatic Davis Falls waterfall), the Tibetan refugee settlement at Tashiling where the carpet-weaving tradition brought from Tibet sixty years ago continues with extraordinary skill, and the International Mountain Museum — the most complete museum of Himalayan mountaineering history in the world, its exhibits covering the great expeditions from Mallory and Irvine to the modern 8,000m era.

Flight to Kathmandu — Connecting Flight to Chitwan

Chitwan

A 30-minute mountain flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu (the mountain views from the right-hand seat going east are extraordinary), connecting to the short internal flight to Bharatpur in the Terai. Transfer to Meghauli Serai — a Taj safari resort on the edge of Chitwan National Park, its lodge-style rooms facing directly onto the grassland and the Rapti River beyond.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Meghauli Serai, Chitwan ★★★★★
8

Chitwan: Elephant Safari & Canoe

Chitwan

A dawn elephant-back safari into the sal forest and elephant grass of Chitwan National Park — the most traditional and atmospheric way to experience Nepal's wildlife. One-horned Indian rhinoceroses (over 600 in the park) are almost always encountered; wild elephants, deer and crocodiles are frequently seen. Afternoon: a dugout canoe silent-drifting on the Rapti River with a wildlife naturalist, watching gharial crocodiles sunning on the banks and kingfishers hunting the shallows. Chitwan's extraordinary evening sounds — jungle insects, distant big-cat calls — fill the lodge terrace at dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 0.5 kmHotel: Meghauli Serai, Chitwan ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Ask the naturalist for the most recent rhino sighting locations — they track movement daily. In the grass near the Rapti bend there is a regular rhino congregation in the morning. I have never once failed to see rhino at Chitwan in over a hundred visits.
9

Chitwan: Jeep Safari

Chitwan

A full-day open-top jeep safari deep into Chitwan's core zone — the areas of densest wildlife activity, accessible only by jeep. Bengal tigers are present in the park (sightings are rare but possible); the diversity of bird life is extraordinary — over 600 species recorded here. Afternoon at leisure at the lodge; sunset drinks on the terrace watching the elephant grass turn gold.

Who will plan your holiday

Arjun Gurung

Arjun was born in Kathmandu's Newari old city and grew up surrounded by the temple complexes he now guides. His master's degree in Comparative Religion gives him an academic foundation that most guides lack — he understands both Hindu and Buddhist iconography at a scholarly level and can communicate it with disarming clarity. Outside guiding, he practises Tibetan Buddhist meditation and is a skilled photographer.

Nepal exceeded every expectation — and we had high ones

We had heard Nepal was transformative and it is. Arjun's knowledge of the temple iconography turned what could have been a series of sightseeing stops into a genuine spiritual education. Dwarika's Hotel is absolutely extraordinary — we've stayed in fine hotels all over the world and this is among the very best. The rhino at Chitwan, just fifty metres from the canoe, was one of the great wildlife moments of our lives.

Solo at 72 — I felt completely safe and deeply moved

Nepal was on my list for thirty years and I finally went solo at 72. Arjun looked after me with extraordinary care and warmth. Boudhanath reduced me to tears — 3,000 pilgrims circumambulating the great white dome in the early morning, the sound of their mantras, the smell of juniper incense. Pokhara and the Annapurna reflection was the most beautiful thing I have seen in my life. Go to Nepal.

Three utterly different Nepals in one journey

Kathmandu's medieval temples, Pokhara's lake and mountains, Chitwan's jungle — three completely different experiences on one tour. That variety is what makes Nepal so satisfying. Arjun managed the transitions perfectly. The elephant safari at Chitwan, meeting a rhino at close range, remains the image we keep returning to weeks later.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How does the altitude in Kathmandu affect travellers?

Kathmandu sits at 1,400 metres — high enough that some visitors notice a mild effect in the first 24 hours (slight breathlessness, a tendency to feel tired more quickly). This is not altitude sickness and resolves within a day without any medication. We build a gentle first day into the itinerary specifically to allow acclimatisation. Pokhara at 820m is lower and Chitwan at 150m is essentially at sea level. This tour involves no trekking and reaches no altitude above 1,400m in Kathmandu.

Is Nepal safe to visit?

Nepal is one of the safest destinations in Asia for visitors. Crime against tourists is very rare; the Nepali people have a well-deserved reputation for warmth and hospitality. The main safety consideration is the occasional political bandh (strike) which can disrupt road travel; Arjun monitors these and reroutes as necessary. Kathmandu's traffic is chaotic but our private vehicles navigate it confidently. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.

What is the visa process for Nepal?

UK citizens obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. A 15-day visa costs USD 30; 30-day costs USD 50; 90-day costs USD 125. You need passport photos (the airport has a photo booth) and the fee in cash (USD preferred). The process takes approximately 20–30 minutes. Arjun meets you immediately after you clear customs. We send full instructions in your pre-departure information pack.

What is the elephant safari like?

The elephant-back safari at Chitwan is one of the great wildlife experiences in Asia. You sit in a howdah (a wooden seat on the elephant's back) with your naturalist guide, moving through the sal forest and elephant grass at walking pace — the height giving you a clear view over the grass that a jeep cannot provide. One-horned rhinos are almost always encountered; wild elephants, spotted deer and crocodiles are frequently seen. The experience is gentle physically — the elephant does all the work. Some guests find the swaying motion requires adjustment, but discomfort is rare.

Can I see Everest from Kathmandu?

Everest is not visible from Kathmandu city itself — it is hidden behind lower intervening peaks. From the Nagarkot ridge (a one-hour drive from the city, available as an add-on on this tour), Everest can be seen on the far eastern horizon on clear mornings, along with Lhotse, Makalu and the entire Rolwaling range. The mountain views from Pokhara — primarily the Annapurna massif and the extraordinary Machapuchare (Fishtail) — are more dramatic and closer than anything visible from Kathmandu.

What should I know about visiting Hindu and Buddhist temples in Nepal?

Nepal's temples are living places of worship, not museums. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) at all religious sites. Remove shoes before entering temple buildings — there will always be a designated area outside. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the inner sanctums of some Hindu temples (including Pashupatinath's main temple); the surrounding ghats and outer courtyards are fully accessible. Buddhist stupas and gompas are generally open to all respectful visitors. Photography is usually permitted in outer areas but not in inner sanctums — Arjun advises at each site. The Pashupatinath cremation ghats should be observed from the opposite bank — never approached directly.
