About this tour

Eight days distilled from Nepal's greatest gifts: the ancient city-kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley with their carved-wood palace squares and living temple traditions, and the extraordinary lakeside city of Pokhara where the Annapurna range fills the northern horizon with snow and ice. This small-group tour, led by Emma Walsh — a Bristolian who arrived in Kathmandu in 2018 and never left — covers the essential Nepal without trekking, altitude or physical challenge. Emma's guiding style is warm, conversational and deeply knowledgeable. She briefs the group each evening over dinner, preparing them for the following day's temples and cultural contexts with stories that make dry history vivid. Her particular affection for Bhaktapur — the most intact of the three medieval kingdoms, its Durbar Square still ringed by functioning workshops and artisan communities — means the group consistently rates the Bhaktapur day as an unexpected highlight.

Emma Walsh arrived in Nepal in 2018 on a gap year after 15 years in broadcast journalism and found the story she'd been looking for. She now leads small groups across Nepal's cultural heartland with the journalist's gift of making complex stories clear and personal.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Small group of maximum 12 means personal attention and no waiting around
  • Three nights in one Kathmandu hotel means no packing and unpacking
  • Bhaktapur is one of the most remarkably preserved medieval cities in Asia — entirely flat to explore
  • Pokhara's dawn lake boat is the tour's defining moment — gentle, beautiful and entirely effortless
  • Emma's knowledge of where to find Kathmandu's best pashmina and thangka workshops (genuine quality at fair prices) is a practical bonus guests genuinely appreciate
  • Nepal is one of the safest and most welcoming destinations in Asia for over-60s travelling solo or in pairs

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival — Kathmandu

Kathmandu

The group meets at Tribhuvan Airport and transfers to the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu — a large, comfortable property in its own garden estate with an outdoor pool and excellent dining. Emma's welcome dinner is relaxed and convivial: the group is introduced over excellent Nepali dal bhat.

Kathmandu: Boudhanath & Pashupatinath

Kathmandu

The great Tibetan Buddhist stupa of Boudhanath in the early morning as the pilgrims begin their circumambulation, then the sacred Hindu temple complex of Pashupatinath and its riverside cremation ghats. Emma's briefings on Buddhist and Hindu traditions — delivered with a journalist's precision and a traveller's empathy — give the group a framework for everything they will see.

Bhaktapur — Nepal's Medieval Masterpiece

Kathmandu

An entire day in Bhaktapur — the best-preserved medieval city in the Himalayas. The 55 Window Palace, the Peacock Window, the pottery square where potters still work the ancient pedal wheel, the weavers' district producing traditional dhaka cloth — Bhaktapur is a functioning medieval city, not a preserved relic. Emma's affection for it is catching; groups consistently rate this as the day that most surprises them.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4.5 kmHotel: Hyatt Regency Kathmandu ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Bhaktapur's best cup of tea is at a small shop on the northwest corner of Taumadhi Square — the owner makes it with local honey and dried ginger. I have been taking groups there for six years and the recipe hasn't changed.
4

Kathmandu Durbar Square — Fly to Pokhara

Pokhara

A morning visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square — the palace complex of the Malla kings and the living goddess Kumari, whose brief daily appearance at her window remains one of the most remarkable experiences in Nepal. Then a 30-minute mountain flight to Pokhara with the Himalayan panorama visible from the aircraft. Check in to the Barahi Jungle Lodge on Phewa Lake.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2.5 kmHotel: Barahi Jungle Lodge, Pokhara ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Kumari — the living goddess, a young girl selected by complex ritual criteria to embody the goddess Taleju — appears briefly at her Kumari Chowk window each morning. The appearance lasts seconds. I position the group well in advance and Emma briefs on the religious significance so the moment is understood rather than merely witnessed.

Pokhara: Dawn Lake & Annapurna Views

Pokhara

Pre-dawn on Phewa Lake in a traditional wooden rowing boat — the mountain reflection appears as the mist clears and the light grows. The Annapurna range — Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhare, Annapurna I, II, III and IV — fills the horizon in an unbroken wall of snow and ice. Return for breakfast, then the afternoon for the World Peace Pagoda walk (gentle, 45 minutes return from the lakeside, with views of both city and mountains).

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Barahi Jungle Lodge, Pokhara ★★★★★
6

Pokhara: Tibetan Refugees & Mountain Museum

Pokhara

The Tashiling Tibetan settlement, the International Mountain Museum (best in the Himalayas), and a long afternoon at leisure on the lakeside — coffee at the Lakeside strip cafes, browsing the mountain gear shops (the quality Nepali pashmina here is excellent), or simply watching the reflections from the hotel garden.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Barahi Jungle Lodge, Pokhara ★★★★★

Sarangkot Sunrise — Fly Back to Kathmandu

Kathmandu

An optional 5am drive to Sarangkot hilltop (1,600m) for the most celebrated sunrise viewpoint above Pokhara — the whole Annapurna range in alpenglow, the lake below. (A lie-in with lake views from the hotel terrace is equally valid.) Morning flight back to Kathmandu. Final afternoon free — last shopping, last dal bhat, last walk through Thamel.

What our guests say

Guest reviews

Nepal in eight days — more than enough to fall in love

Emma is superb. She turns what could be a bewildering series of temples into a coherent cultural narrative. Bhaktapur was a genuine revelation — we had not expected a medieval city so perfectly preserved and still fully alive. The dawn lake at Pokhara was the most beautiful thing either of us has seen in decades of travel. We're already planning a return for the 12-day tour.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do the Kathmandu Valley's three kingdoms differ from each other?

Each of the three medieval city-kingdoms has a distinct character. Kathmandu's Durbar Square is the most visited and the most dynamic — the living goddess Kumari resides here, and the square is still a functioning civic and ceremonial centre. Patan (Lalitpur) is regarded by art historians as having the most refined Newar architecture — its craftsmanship is more delicate and its artisan traditions better preserved. Bhaktapur is the most intact as a complete medieval city — its car-free old town still functions as a living community with pottery, weaving and woodcarving practiced in the same buildings they have occupied for centuries. Emma typically devotes a day to each and tailors the emphasis to the group's interests.

Is the mountain visibility reliable?

October–November is Nepal's finest viewing season: the monsoon has ended, the atmosphere is washed clean and the visibility is typically exceptional. The Annapurna range from Pokhara is clearly visible on most mornings. March–April is the second-best season, with good visibility before the pre-monsoon haze builds. Emma monitors forecasts and rearranges activities if needed to maximise mountain viewing opportunities. The lake dawn is always attempted on the clearest-forecast morning.
