Nepal: Kathmandu Valley Deep Dive
Seven days immersed in the world's greatest concentration of living medieval culture

About this tour
The Kathmandu Valley contains more UNESCO-listed monuments per square kilometre than any other place on earth. In a valley roughly 25 kilometres across, three medieval kingdoms — each the capital of a dynasty that competed in artistic patronage for centuries — created a concentration of temples, palaces, shrines and courtyards that staggers architectural historians. This seven-day tour stays within the valley (plus one night at Nagarkot on the rim for the sunrise) and devotes itself to understanding this extraordinary cultural landscape properly. Emma Walsh leads with the same journalist's gift for the telling detail that makes the abstract concrete. Her particular knowledge of the Malla dynasty's competitive temple-building — each king trying to outdo his neighbours in architectural ambition — gives the Durbar Squares a narrative that transforms them from a beautiful confusion into a legible story.
“Emma Walsh focuses this tour on what she loves best — the Kathmandu Valley and its extraordinary layered history. Her briefings on the Malla dynasty period are regarded by guests as the most illuminating cultural education they have received on any tour.”

What our guests say
Guest reviews
For serious cultural travellers, this is the Nepal tour
“I am an art historian specialising in South Asian sculpture and I found Emma's level of knowledge genuinely impressive. The Patan Museum alone justifies this tour — it is one of the finest small museums in Asia and Emma knows every piece in it. Dwarika's Hotel is extraordinary. I will return for the 12-day cultural tour next year.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is seven days enough for the Kathmandu Valley?
For the valley alone, seven days is substantial — you see all three kingdoms properly, visit Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, and have the Nagarkot sunrise. You do not visit Pokhara or Chitwan on this tour; those regions are covered by the Classic 10-day or Cultural 12-day tours. This tour is ideal for those who have already been to Pokhara and Chitwan, or who are primarily interested in the medieval architecture and religious culture of the valley rather than mountain trekking or wildlife.
What is Dwarika's Hotel?
Dwarika's is the most celebrated heritage hotel in Nepal — a collection of 19 traditional courtyards built using ancient carved windows, brickwork and timber salvaged from buildings demolished across the Kathmandu Valley over the past century. It is simultaneously a luxury hotel and a cultural conservation project. The founder, the late Dwarika Das Shrestha, spent decades tracking down and purchasing Newar architectural elements that would otherwise have been lost; the hotel is his life's work made physical. The Krishnarpan restaurant serves a 22-course royal Nepali feast that is the finest traditional meal available in the country.
