Nepal & Bhutan: Two Himalayan Kingdoms
The last two living Buddhist kingdoms of the Himalayas — experienced together for the first time

About this tour
Bhutan is unlike anywhere else on earth — a Buddhist kingdom that has chosen to measure its prosperity not in GDP but in Gross National Happiness, that strictly limits tourist numbers to protect its culture and environment, and that has maintained 72% forest cover by constitutional law. The Tiger's Nest monastery (Paro Taktsang), clinging to a sheer cliff face 3,000 metres above the Paro Valley with pine forest below and prayer flags above, is the most dramatic sacred building in Asia. This fourteen-day journey pairs six nights in Nepal (Kathmandu Valley's essential temples and one night at Nagarkot for the Himalayan sunrise) with eight nights in Bhutan (Paro, Thimphu and the Punakha valley), giving both countries the time they deserve. The contrast between Nepal's chaotic, vital ancient-and-modern Buddhist culture and Bhutan's pristine, regulated, entirely traditional kingdom is one of the great revelatory experiences available to any traveller. Bhutan's required Tourism Development Fee (currently USD 200 per person per day) is included in this tour price. All Bhutanese accommodation, guides and transport are provided by our licensed Bhutanese partner. Arjun Gurung leads the Nepal section; Pema Dorji — one of Bhutan's most experienced and scholarly cultural guides — leads in Bhutan.
“Arjun Gurung leads Nepal (Days 1–6); Pema Dorji leads Bhutan (Days 7–14). Pema is a Thimphu-born Buddhist scholar and 18-year guiding veteran, one of fewer than 200 licensed Bhutanese cultural guides.”
Why this works for travellers over 50
- Bhutan's small-scale, unhurried culture is ideally suited to over-60s travellers — there is no rush anywhere
- The Tiger's Nest ascent has an alternative viewpoint for those who prefer not to climb — the monastery is visible and magnificent from the trail's first level
- Bhutan's limited tourism means sites are never crowded — often visited in complete solitude
- Uma Paro (COMO) is one of the finest boutique hotels in Asia — its Ayurvedic spa and Himalayan views are exceptional
- Pema Dorji has guided in Bhutan for 18 years and holds a degree in Buddhist studies — his knowledge of Dzong architecture and Vajrayana symbolism is unparalleled
- Bhutan's political stability, low crime and pristine environment make it one of the safest destinations in the world

Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang)
Paro
The defining experience of Bhutan. Paro Taktsang — the Tiger's Nest — clings to a sheer cliff face at 3,120 metres, accessible only by a two-and-a-half hour hike on a steep mountain path. The monastery was built around the cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century, flying there on the back of a tigress. The approach, the crossing of the waterfall ravine, and the arrival in the monastery's inner sanctum with its extraordinary gold and jewel iconography, is genuinely transformative. An alternative viewpoint at the first trail level (1.5 hours return, moderate ascent) offers a magnificent full view of the monastery for those who prefer not to complete the full hike.

The drive from Paro to Thimphu — Bhutan's capital and the only capital city in the world without traffic lights — passes through traditional farmland and forested passes. Thimphu's cultural institutions: the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (the traditional arts school where the 13 ancient crafts of Bhutan — including thangka painting, wood carving and embroidery — are taught to the next generation), the Royal Textile Academy and the Motithang Takin Preserve — home to Bhutan's national animal, the extraordinary takin (a bovine/goat hybrid described by Rudyard Kipling as "the most bizarre animal in the world").

Punakha
The drive from Thimphu to Punakha crosses the Dochula Pass at 3,100m — on clear days, a panorama of over 400km of Himalayan peaks. The 108 memorial stupas on the pass, built to honour Bhutanese soldiers, are extraordinarily moving. Descend to subtropical Punakha — warmer, greener and centred on the great Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two sacred rivers.

Punakha Dzong & Fertility Temple
Punakha
Punakha Dzong — the finest fortress-monastery in Bhutan, its white and ochre towers rising between the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers — in the morning, followed by the extraordinary Chimi Lhakhang fertility temple, dedicated to the "Divine Madman" Drukpa Kunley, who used unconventional and bawdy methods to achieve Buddhist enlightenment. The temple and its traditions are candid and joyful — Pema's briefing turns what could be an awkward visit into a hilarious and enlightening cultural encounter.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
The most significant journey of our considerable travelling lives
“We have travelled widely and discriminatingly for fifty years. This tour is the finest we have ever taken. Bhutan is simply extraordinary — a country that has made different choices from every other and the results are visible everywhere: in the intact traditional culture, in the pristine forests, in the unhurried dignity of the people. Pema Dorji is one of the great guides we have encountered in a lifetime of travel. The Tiger's Nest, approached through the pine forest at dawn, is the single most powerful travel experience either of us has had. We would give this ten stars if that were possible.”

Everything we had hoped and more — particularly Bhutan
“We did Nepal ten years ago on a standard tour. This tour was completely different — deeper, more private, more moving. But it was Bhutan that genuinely changed us. The Punakha Dzong at the river confluence, the Dochula Pass panorama, the Tiger's Nest from the halfway point (we didn't attempt the full ascent and Pema found us the perfect viewpoint) — all were extraordinary. The Amankora properties are the finest hotels we have stayed in anywhere in the world.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What is Bhutan's Tourism Development Fee and why is it so high?
Bhutan charges a mandatory USD 200 per person per day Tourism Development Fee, reduced from the former USD 250 rate. This fee covers a significant portion of your accommodation, meals and guide costs, is used to fund free healthcare and education for all Bhutanese citizens, and most importantly enforces the "high value, low volume" tourism policy that has protected Bhutan's culture and environment from the mass tourism that has transformed other Himalayan destinations. The fee is included in our tour price. Bhutan's remarkable intact culture — 72% forest cover, pristine monasteries, living traditions unchanged for centuries — is directly attributable to this policy. Most guests who visit Bhutan feel the fee represents exceptional value.
Is the Tiger's Nest compulsory?
No. The hike to the Tiger's Nest is the tour's most physically demanding element and is entirely optional. The alternative viewpoint — reached after a 90-minute moderate ascent to the first trail cafeteria — provides a full, magnificent view of the monastery on its cliff face. Many guests find this viewpoint entirely satisfying. Those who complete the full ascent to the monastery itself describe it as transformative. Pema assesses the group's preferences and physical condition the evening before and plans the approach accordingly. Horses are available for hire for the lower section of the trail.
How does Bhutan's culture differ from Nepal's?
Nepal is a country of extraordinary religious pluralism and density — Hindu temples and Buddhist shrines in every street, a chaotic living culture shaped by centuries of trade and migration. Bhutan is Vajrayana Buddhist and almost exclusively so, a monarchy where the traditional culture is actively supported by government policy and where the pace of modernity has been deliberately managed. Nepal feels ancient and alive in its complexity; Bhutan feels pristine and purposeful in its clarity. Together they represent the two faces of Himalayan civilisation — the syncretic and the pure. Experiencing both on a single journey is one of the great privileges available to travellers in Asia.
What is the Druk Air flight to Paro like?
The Paro approach is considered by pilots to be one of the most technically demanding commercial landings in the world — the aircraft descends through the mountains, banking sharply between peaks that are 7,000m high, before levelling for a short runway landing in the valley floor. On clear days the view from the window is extraordinary: Everest, Kangchenjunga, Makalu and Chomolhari visible in sequence as you descend. Druk Air (Bhutan's national airline) pilots hold special certification for the Paro approach. The flight itself is perfectly safe; the experience is unforgettable.
