Palawan Paradise: El Nido Island Hopping & Hidden Lagoons
Limestone cliffs, turquoise lagoons and deserted beaches — the Philippines at its most spectacular

About this tour
Palawan has topped more "world's best island" lists than any other destination in Southeast Asia, and El Nido — at the northern tip — is the reason. Here, nearly 50 limestone islands rise from a sea so clear you can see the coral 12 metres below the surface. The Big Lagoon, the Secret Lagoon, the Shimizu Island reef — these are places that look like computer-generated images but are entirely, overwhelmingly real. Your specialist guide for this journey is Marco dela Cruz, a Palawan native who spent eight years as a marine biologist with the Tubbataha Reef conservation programme before turning his expertise toward private guiding. He knows which islands are crowded and which are empty, which reefs are recovering and which are thriving, and how to time each visit to avoid the day-trip boats that descend on the main lagoon sites between 10:00 and 14:00. With Marco, you see El Nido as a local sees it — not as a checkbox on a tourist circuit. You stay at El Nido Resorts' Miniloc Island property for five nights — a boutique eco-resort on its own private island, reachable only by boat, with cottages built over the water and a reef directly off the jetty. It is one of the finest small resorts in the Philippines and is included in full in the package price.
“Designed by Marco dela Cruz, our Palawan specialist and former Tubbataha Reef marine biologist with 9 years of guiding experience.”

Big Lagoon & Secret Lagoon
El Nido
The classic El Nido island-hopping circuit, done privately and at the right time. Depart at 08:30, before the day-trip flotillas arrive, to the Big Lagoon — a vast, enclosed sea-lake surrounded by 200-metre limestone cliffs, accessed through a narrow gap in the rock. Kayak the inner lagoon in near-silence. Continue to the Secret Lagoon, accessible only through a small hole in the cliff face at low tide. Snorkelling at Shimizu Island reef — one of the richest coral sites in Bacuit Bay. Lunch on a deserted sandbar.

Second island circuit: the Small Lagoon — intimate, crystal-clear, surrounded by walls of karst limestone draped in ferns and orchids. Snorkelling at Pinasil Island, where a submerged cathedral cave is accessible by swimming through its entrance. The famous Snake Island sandbar — a kilometre-long white sand spit that curves through the sea like a serpent, visible only at low tide. Afternoon free at Miniloc resort.

El Nido
Marco's private route to the less-visited northern islands: Cadlao Lagoon (El Nido's largest, and the most pristine) and Helicopter Island — named for its aerial silhouette — with a beach rated among the Philippines' finest. Snorkelling in the coral gardens of Matinloc Shrine, where clear water over white sand creates an almost fluorescent blue. A long, unhurried lunch on a private beach. Return to Miniloc in time for sunset from the resort jetty.

Who will plan your holiday
Marco dela Cruz
Marco grew up in Puerto Princesa and spent eight years as a marine biologist with the Tubbataha Reef UNESCO World Heritage conservation programme before discovering that sharing the Philippines' natural wonders with visitors was more rewarding than writing research papers. He holds a degree in Marine Biology from the University of the Philippines Visayas and speaks English with impressive clarity and warmth. His knowledge of reef ecology, karst geology and Palawan's indigenous Tagbanua communities is without equal in El Nido, and guests consistently describe his island-hopping days as the highlight of their entire trip.

What our guests say
Guest reviews
Better than any photo we'd seen
“We'd seen photographs of El Nido for years and assumed reality would disappoint. It didn't — it exceeded everything. Marco's timing was impeccable; we had the Big Lagoon almost entirely to ourselves at 08:30 and the silence was extraordinary. Miniloc Island Resort is one of the most beautiful places we've ever stayed.”

Perfect pace for a 63-year-old travelling solo
“I was nervous about snorkelling but Marco was wonderfully patient — I'm not a strong swimmer and he stayed beside me the whole time. The Secret Lagoon on Day 4 was the single most beautiful place I've ever been. Miniloc felt like a private island hideaway rather than a resort.”

The Philippines finally delivered
“We'd tried to arrange a Philippines trip independently before and found it overwhelming. Having Marco handle everything — permits, boat timings, reef conditions — made all the difference. The Underground River is genuinely spectacular. El Nido is in a category of its own.”

Miniloc at dawn is unforgettable
“Waking in a water cottage with the lagoon lapping below the floorboards and a kingfisher on the railing — I've been travelling for 40 years and that is still one of the best mornings I can remember. Marco's marine biology knowledge brought the reef to life in a way no guidebook could.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be able to swim to enjoy this tour?
You do not need to be a strong swimmer. A snorkel, mask and life vest are provided for all boat days. Marco always has a flotation aid available and never leaves non-swimmers unsupported. The boat days are enjoyable even if you choose not to snorkel — the lagoon scenery from the boat itself is extraordinary.
What is the weather like in El Nido?
El Nido's dry season runs November to May, with calm seas and almost daily sunshine. Our departures are timed exclusively within this window. June to October brings the southwest monsoon — seas can be rough and some island sites close. We monitor conditions and will reroute if needed.
How do I get to Manila?
Flights from London to Manila with Philippine Airlines, Cathay Pacific (via Hong Kong) or Emirates (via Dubai) typically take 13–16 hours. We can arrange flights as part of your booking. The package price covers all internal Philippines flights.
Is Miniloc Island Resort suitable for those with mobility issues?
Miniloc Island is a natural environment with some uneven paths. The water cottages are accessed by wooden boardwalks with steps. We recommend this resort for guests who are mobile and comfortable on slightly uneven ground. For guests with significant mobility requirements, we can suggest a beach-front villa alternative in El Nido town.
Are there Philippines visa requirements for British travellers?
British passport holders can enter the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days, extendable to 59 days at the Bureau of Immigration in Manila. No advance visa application is required. We advise ensuring your passport has at least 6 months validity from the date of travel.
