About this tour

The Visayas — the island group at the heart of the Philippine archipelago — contains two of the country's most rewarding destinations, separated by a 2-hour ferry: Bohol, with its geological wonder of 1,268 perfectly conical hills and the world's smallest primate, and Cebu, the cradle of Philippine Christianity, where Magellan planted the first cross in 1521 and where a thriving city of 2.5 million people coexists with coral reefs and whale shark encounters. Your guide is Rosa Villamor, a Cebuana who studied History and Heritage Conservation at the University of San Carlos in Cebu before spending a decade working with the National Cultural Heritage Commission. She has guided in the Visayas for eleven years, and her ability to make the region's 500-year history feel vivid and personal — rather than textbook — is remarkable. She is particularly passionate about the tarsier, a primate so biologically extraordinary that Rosa can speak for 20 minutes about its eyes alone. You stay at the Amorita Resort Bohol — a clifftop boutique property above Alona Beach on Panglao Island — and the Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan in Cebu, one of the island's finest beach resorts. Both are included in full.

Designed by Rosa Villamor, our Visayas specialist with 11 years of guiding experience in Bohol and Cebu.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Rosa Villamor brings 11 years of Visayas expertise and genuine academic depth
  • The Chocolate Hills are one of Asia's most extraordinary natural sights — and almost unknown in the UK
  • Tarsier encounter at the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary (ethical, conservation-run)
  • Amorita Resort Bohol is a clifftop hideaway above one of Bohol's best beaches
  • No day exceeds 4km of walking — genuinely comfortable pace throughout
  • Moalboal sardine run snorkelling is one of the Philippines' great wildlife spectacles
  • Magellan's Cross in Cebu — where Philippine Christianity began in 1521

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Cebu

Cebu City

Arrive at Mactan–Cebu International Airport. Private transfer to the Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan. Rosa meets you at the resort for a welcome dinner and an introduction to the ten days ahead. Evening walk along the resort beach.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, Cebu ★★★★★
2

Cebu City — Intramuros & Spanish Heritage

Cebu City

Cebu is where the Philippines begins. Rosa's walking tour of the historic centre: Magellan's Cross (planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 — the oldest symbol of Christianity in Southeast Asia, still venerated today), the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño (the oldest Catholic church in the Philippines, housing the nation's most sacred image), Fort San Pedro (a triangular Spanish fortification, the smallest in the country), and the Heritage of Cebu Monument. Lunch at a local restaurant in the Colon Street district — the oldest street in the Philippines.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, Cebu ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Rosa's favourite moment in Cebu: entering the Basilica before 08:00 when the candle-lighting devotees are there but the tourist groups have not yet arrived. The atmosphere is profoundly moving.
3

Moalboal Sardine Run & Oslob (Optional)

Cebu — Moalboal

Drive 2 hours south to Moalboal on Cebu's southwest coast. Snorkelling in the famous sardine run — millions of sardines swirling in a vast bait-ball just 15 metres from the beach, a natural phenomenon unlike anything in the Philippines. No boat required — you swim from the shore. Turtle sighting almost guaranteed on the same reef. Lunch at a clifftop restaurant above the sea. Optional: continue to Oslob for ethical whale shark watching (an add-on — Rosa discusses the conservation issues honestly).

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, Cebu ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The sardine bait-ball at Moalboal is stationary — it doesn't migrate. It stays in the same location year-round, 15m from the beach. You float above millions of fish with no strong current. Rosa describes it as the most accessible wildlife spectacle in the Philippines.
4

Ferry to Bohol — Panglao Island

Cebu → Bohol

Morning fast ferry from Cebu pier to Tagbilaran, Bohol (approximately 2 hours). Drive across Bohol to Panglao Island — a smaller island connected to Bohol by bridge, with white-sand Alona Beach as its centrepiece. Check in to Amorita Resort on the clifftop above the beach. Afternoon at leisure — Alona Beach is perfect for swimming, and the house reef is snorkelling distance from the shore.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Amorita Resort Bohol ★★★★★
5

Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary & Loboc River

Bohol

Drive north into the Bohol interior. First stop: the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary at Corella — a conservation-run, ethical wildlife sanctuary where wild tarsiers live freely in their natural habitat. Rosa's knowledge of the tarsier's biology (eyes that cannot move in their sockets, a head that rotates 180 degrees, a navigational call at 70kHz — far above human hearing) is extraordinary. After the sanctuary: the Loboc River — a lunch cruise upriver on a traditional floating restaurant, passing nipa palm-fringed banks and small riverside communities.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (river cruise)Walking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Amorita Resort Bohol ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The tarsier sanctuary at Corella is the only ethical tarsier facility in Bohol. Avoid any "sanctuary" that allows flash photography or handling — tarsiers are so stress-sensitive they can die from over-exposure. The Corella site has no such issues.
6

Chocolate Hills & Blood Compact Site

Bohol

The geological centrepiece of Bohol: the Chocolate Hills — 1,268 perfectly symmetrical conical hills covering 50 square kilometres of the island's interior. The hills turn chocolate-brown in the dry season (hence the name) and are unlike any landscape on Earth. Rosa explains the contested geology (limestone karst, marine fossil origin). The viewpoint at the Chocolate Hills Complex offers a 360-degree panorama that is, without overstatement, one of the most remarkable sights in Asia. Afternoon: the Blood Compact Monument at Bool — marking the first formal treaty between East and West (Sikatuna and Legaspi, 1565).

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Amorita Resort Bohol ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Chocolate Hills viewpoint involves 214 steps to the summit platform. The view from the top is worth every one of them. Rosa always builds in a 20-minute rest at the top before descending.
Accessibility: The 214-step climb is the most strenuous section of the entire tour. Guests who prefer not to climb can view the hills from the base viewpoint, which still provides an impressive panorama.
7

Panglao Island Snorkelling & Free Day

Bohol — Panglao

Morning snorkelling trip to the Balicasag Island marine sanctuary — one of the Philippines' most spectacular dive and snorkel sites, with walls of coral dropping 30 metres and resident sea turtles, jacks and moorish idols. Afternoon free at Amorita Resort or on Alona Beach. Rosa joins you for a farewell dinner at the resort restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Amorita Resort Bohol ★★★★★
8

Return to Cebu — Mactan Shrine & Afternoon Free

Bohol → Cebu

Morning ferry back to Cebu. Transfer to Mactan Island and a visit to the Mactan Shrine — where Ferdinand Magellan was killed by the chieftain Lapu-Lapu in 1521, the first defeat of a European force in the Philippines. Rosa's account of the Battle of Mactan (Magellan had 50 soldiers; Lapu-Lapu had 1,500) is one of the most engaging stories in all of Asian history. Afternoon free at the Crimson Resort. Final dinner at the resort's seaside restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, Cebu ★★★★★

Cebu Departure

Final morning free at the resort — one last swim, breakfast on the terrace, or a walk along the beach. Private transfer to Mactan–Cebu International Airport. Rosa sees you off.

Who will plan your holiday

Rosa Villamor

Rosa was born in Cebu City and studied History and Heritage Conservation at the University of San Carlos — the oldest university in the Philippines, founded by the Jesuits in 1595. She worked for seven years with the National Cultural Heritage Commission cataloguing Visayas colonial churches before concluding that the best way to bring the region's history to life was through private guiding. Her knowledge of the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines — particularly the extraordinary story of Magellan's voyage and death on Mactan — is academic in depth but entirely accessible in delivery. She has been working with Holidays to Asia since 2019.

The Chocolate Hills are extraordinary

We'd never heard of the Chocolate Hills before booking and they turned out to be the most surreal and beautiful landscape we've seen in 30 years of travelling in Asia. Rosa's explanation of the geology made it even more remarkable. The tarsiers were incredible — those eyes! Amorita Resort is stunning.

Rosa is a gifted teacher

I came for the beaches and left knowing far more about Philippine history than I'd expected. Rosa's account of Magellan's death on Mactan — told standing at the exact spot — was genuinely thrilling. The Moalboal sardine run was a complete shock — I had no idea anything like that existed in the Philippines.

Nine days that felt perfectly judged

The combination of Cebu's heritage and Bohol's natural wonders was ideal — enough variety to feel like two different countries but all within an easy ferry ride. Crimson Resort on Mactan is excellent. Amorita Resort in Bohol is outstanding. Rosa was the best guide we've had anywhere in Asia.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a strong swimmer for the snorkelling days?

No. All snorkelling is done with a life vest and snorkel guide. The Moalboal sardine run is 15 metres from shore in calm, shallow water. Balicasag Island is a boat trip with calm conditions in the dry season. Rosa always ensures no guest feels uncomfortable in the water.

How strenuous is the Chocolate Hills viewpoint climb?

There are 214 steps to the summit viewing platform. They are evenly spaced and railed throughout. Rosa builds in a rest stop halfway and takes the ascent slowly. Guests with knee problems may prefer to view the hills from the lower platform, which still provides a good panorama.

What is the best time to visit Bohol and Cebu?

The dry season (November to May) is best for both islands. June to October brings typhoon risk and rain. We only offer departures in the dry season window, and all our selected departure dates are historically stable in terms of weather.

Is the whale shark experience at Oslob ethical?

This is a complex question that Rosa addresses honestly. The Oslob whale sharks are fed by local fishermen, which concentrates them artificially and alters their behaviour. Many conservationists oppose it; others argue it provides an economic alternative to fishing. We make it an optional add-on and leave the decision to guests after Rosa's full briefing.
