About this tour

The Philippines is the only predominantly Christian country in Asia, and the reason is a single afternoon in April 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan planted the first Catholic cross on the island of Cebu. The 500 years that followed — Spanish colonisation, the construction of Intramuros, the friars' churches spreading across every island — left a heritage unlike anything else in Southeast Asia: Baroque stone churches, walled cities, and a culture that is simultaneously Asian, Spanish and distinctly Filipino. This 10-day private tour begins in Manila's Intramuros — the 16th-century walled city that is the Philippines' most important colonial monument — before flying south to Cebu, where Rosa Villamor (our Visayas heritage specialist) takes over for the final days in Cebu City and Bohol. The tour is curated for guests who want to understand the Philippines rather than simply collect its beaches, though both the Crimson Resort in Cebu and the Amorita Resort in Bohol provide excellent coastal time in the final days. Manila guide Jerome Santos studied History at De La Salle University before spending eight years as a heritage consultant for the Intramuros Administration — the agency responsible for restoring and managing the walled city. He knows every stone of Fort Santiago and every altar of San Agustin Church.

Designed by Jerome Santos (Manila) and Rosa Villamor (Cebu & Bohol), our two Philippines heritage specialists.

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Manila

Manila

Arrive at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Private transfer to The Henry Hotel in Pasay. Jerome meets you at the hotel for a welcome dinner at the hotel's restaurant — an introduction to Manila and to the history ahead.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: The Henry Hotel Manila ★★★★
2

Intramuros — The Walled City

Manila

The centrepiece of Manila heritage: Intramuros, the Spanish walled city built from 1571. Jerome's walking tour covers Fort Santiago (the 16th-century fortification where José Rizal was imprisoned before his execution), San Agustin Church (the oldest stone church in the Philippines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with extraordinary Baroque interior), Casa Manila (a reconstructed 19th-century colonial mansion, beautifully presented), and the walls themselves — 4.5 kilometres of basalt stone, largely intact. A heritage lunch at Barbara's restaurant inside Intramuros.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: The Henry Hotel Manila ★★★★
Specialist tip: Jerome's most moving moment in Intramuros: standing in Cell 1 of Fort Santiago, where Rizal spent his final night before execution on 30 December 1896, and reading the last poem he left in his prison lamp.
Accessibility: Intramuros is largely flat but has cobblestone surfaces in places. Jerome can arrange a calesa (horse-drawn carriage) for sections of the tour if preferred.
3

Rizal Park, National Museum & BGC

Manila

Morning at Rizal Park — the green centrepiece of Manila, where José Rizal was executed and where Philippine independence was declared. The National Museum of the Philippines: the colonial-era Legislative Building converted into the country's finest collection of pre-colonial and colonial artefacts, including Juan Luna's Spoliarium (one of the great paintings of 19th-century Asia). Afternoon optional visit to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) — Manila's most dynamic modern district, a fascinating contrast to Intramuros.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: The Henry Hotel Manila ★★★★
Specialist tip: The National Museum is free on Sundays — if your tour falls on a Sunday, Jerome rearranges to take advantage. The Spoliarium alone is worth the visit.
4

Manila to Cebu — Heritage Check-in

Manila → Cebu

Morning domestic flight Manila–Cebu (1 hour 10 minutes). Rosa meets you at the airport. Transfer to the Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan. Afternoon at leisure on the resort beach. Evening: Rosa's introductory dinner and briefing on the Visayas days ahead.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, Cebu ★★★★★
5

Cebu City Heritage — Magellan & the Santo Niño

Cebu City

Rosa's definitive Cebu City heritage tour: Magellan's Cross (1521), the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, Fort San Pedro, the Carbon Market (the Philippines' oldest and busiest market), and the Heritage of Cebu Monument in the Parian district. A lunch of authentic Cebu lechon (the Philippines' finest roast pork, cooked over charcoal for six hours) at a local restaurant Rosa has used for years.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, Cebu ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Cebu lechon is the finest lechon in the Philippines — crisper skin, more aromatic stuffing and a subtler flavour than Manila versions. The best place to eat it is not in a restaurant but at a local carenderia — Rosa knows exactly where.
6

Mactan Shrine & Coastal Afternoon

Cebu — Mactan

Morning visit to the Mactan Shrine — the site of Magellan's death on 27 April 1521, where Lapu-Lapu's warriors repelled the Spanish force. Rosa's account of the Battle of Mactan is one of the tour's defining moments. Adjacent Lapu-Lapu monument and small heritage museum. Afternoon free at the Crimson Resort — swimming, spa or beach.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Crimson Resort & Spa Mactan, Cebu ★★★★★
7

Ferry to Bohol — Tarsier Sanctuary

Cebu → Bohol

Fast ferry Cebu to Tagbilaran, Bohol (2 hours). Drive to the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary at Corella — the ethical conservation site for the world's smallest primate. Rosa's knowledge of tarsier biology is extraordinary: the eyes (as large as the entire brain, impossible to move in their sockets), the ultrasonic call, the 45-million-year evolutionary lineage. Loboc River lunch cruise. Check in to Amorita Resort Bohol on Panglao Island.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (river cruise), DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Amorita Resort Bohol ★★★★★
8

Chocolate Hills & Baclayon Church

Bohol

The 1,268 perfectly conical Chocolate Hills — Bohol's geological centrepiece and one of the most extraordinary natural landscapes in Asia. Rosa's explanation of the marine karst geology and the local mythology gives the hills context beyond their visual impact. Continue to Baclayon Church — the oldest stone church in Bohol (1596), partially damaged by the 2013 Bohol earthquake but substantially restored, with a remarkable heritage museum in the convento. Afternoon free at Amorita Resort.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Amorita Resort Bohol ★★★★★
9

Balicasag Island Snorkelling & Free Day

Bohol — Panglao

Morning boat to Balicasag Island marine sanctuary — turtle cleaning stations, wall coral, vast schools of jacks and snapper. Afternoon entirely free at Amorita Resort or Alona Beach. Farewell dinner at the resort restaurant with fresh-caught fish and Rosa's final stories from Visayas history.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Amorita Resort Bohol ★★★★★
10

Bohol to Cebu — Departure

Bohol → Cebu → Departure

Morning ferry back to Cebu. Private transfer to Mactan–Cebu International Airport for your international departure. Rosa sees you off.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1 km

Jerome Santos

Jerome studied History at De La Salle University in Manila before spending eight years as a heritage consultant for the Intramuros Administration — the agency responsible for conserving and presenting the 16th-century walled city. His knowledge of Manila's colonial layers (Spanish, American, Japanese, and post-independence) is exhaustive, and his ability to tell the story of José Rizal — the Philippines' national hero, executed by the Spanish in 1896 — as a human narrative rather than a historical footnote is something guests consistently describe as the highlight of the Manila days. He joined Holidays to Asia's Philippines programme in 2021.

Jerome made Manila unmissable

We'd been warned that Manila was "just a stopover" but Jerome made it the most intellectually engaging part of the trip. Standing at José Rizal's cell in Fort Santiago was genuinely moving. The Henry Hotel is extraordinary — we'd never stayed anywhere quite like it. Rosa was equally superb in Cebu and Bohol.

The perfect introduction to the Philippines

I'd been intimidated by the Philippines — so many islands, so complex. This tour gave me exactly the right foundation: Manila's remarkable heritage, Cebu's extraordinary colonial history, and Bohol's wildlife. The tarsiers at Corella were the most enchanting small creatures I've ever seen. The pacing was spot-on.

History and beaches in perfect balance

We're primarily history travellers but appreciate good beach time too. This tour got the balance exactly right — three days of deep heritage in Manila, then heritage and culture in Cebu, then the natural wonders of Bohol rounded off with Balicasag Island snorkelling. Both guides were exceptional.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Manila worth spending 3 nights in?

With Jerome Santos guiding you, absolutely yes. Most visitors dismiss Manila as a transit city, but Intramuros is one of the finest Spanish colonial heritage sites in Asia, the National Museum is world-class, and The Henry Hotel is a destination in itself. Three nights allows genuine depth without rushing.

What is The Henry Hotel like?

The Henry is the Philippines' most acclaimed boutique hotel — 42 individually styled rooms in a converted 1970s complex, filled with Filipino art, reclaimed furniture and genuine character. It is not a standard five-star: it is something more interesting. The restaurant is one of Manila's most inventive. We include it specifically because it represents the creative, contemporary Philippines rather than generic luxury.

Can the tour be extended?

Yes. Popular extensions include Coron or El Nido (Palawan) added after the Bohol days — 4–5 additional nights. We can also add Corregidor Island as a Manila day trip (add-on). Contact us to discuss a bespoke extension.

How accessible is the Intramuros walking tour?

Intramuros is largely flat with some cobblestone sections. Jerome can arrange a calesa (traditional horse-drawn carriage) for sections of the tour for guests who prefer not to walk the full 4km. Fort Santiago and San Agustin Church have no significant steps or accessibility barriers.
