About this tour

There is a particular quality to Borneo — a sense of ancient, untouched complexity — that no other destination in Asia quite matches. The island contains the world's oldest tropical rainforest (older than the Amazon), the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea, and the last remaining wild population of the Bornean orangutan, a species that shares 96.9% of our DNA and that, when you encounter it in the forest canopy of the Kinabatangan floodplain, looks back at you with an expression of philosophical patience that is entirely unforgettable. This 14-night journey begins with three nights in Singapore — an unrushed introduction to the Lion City's gardens, heritage and food culture before the Borneo adventure begins. From Kota Kinabalu, Sabah's capital, the journey takes you to the Kinabatangan River wildlife corridor (the richest wildlife habitat in Southeast Asia, where proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, saltwater crocodiles and wild orangutans share the riverbanks), to the extraordinary Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, and to the foothills of Mount Kinabalu — the 4,095-metre granite massif that dominates northern Borneo and, from its lower trails, offers some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in all of Southeast Asia. Throughout, accommodation is in the best available lodges and eco-resorts: places that combine genuine comfort with a deep commitment to the natural environment they inhabit.

The Kinabatangan at dawn, proboscis monkeys in the riverside figs and a wild elephant on the opposite bank — Borneo remains the most extraordinary wildlife destination on earth. — James Whitfield, Malaysia & Singapore Specialist

Mount Kinabalu: Park & Botanical Garden

Kinabalu National Park

Drive into the Crocker Range to Kinabalu National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), where the 4,095-metre granite mountain fills the horizon. The Mountain Garden at Park HQ — a superb botanical collection at 1,500m with views of the summit massif — is followed by a guided nature walk through the lower montane forest, rich in orchids, nepenthes pitcher plants and hornbills. The air at 1,500m is refreshingly cool. Overnight at the park lodges.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 5 kmHotel: Kinabalu Park Lodges ★★★
Specialist tip: The lower forest trails around Kinabalu Park HQ are among the best places in Borneo to see endemic birds — the Bornean green magpie, the mountain blackeye and the Kinabalu serpent-eagle are all regularly seen here.
6

Poring Hot Springs & Transfer to Kinabatangan

Poring → Kinabatangan River

Morning at Poring Hot Springs — natural sulphurous pools in a rainforest setting, with a canopy walkway 40 metres above the forest floor offering extraordinary views into the upper forest. Then a long but scenic private drive east across Sabah to the Kinabatangan River. Arrival at the river lodge in time for the evening boat safari — the best time for wildlife: proboscis monkeys returning to riverside trees to sleep, kingfishers, and occasional elephant sightings.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (packed), DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Kinabatangan River Lodge ★★★
7

Kinabatangan Wildlife Safaris

Kinabatangan River

A full day of twice-daily river safaris in open wooden boats, the single most rewarding wildlife experience in Southeast Asia. Dawn safari (05:45) when mist lies on the river and wildlife is most active: proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, hornbills, Oriental pied hornbills, and — with luck — Bornean pygmy elephants on the riverbank. A rest period during midday heat. Evening safari as the forest comes alive again. James identifies every species and knows the river's wildlife patterns intimately.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Kinabatangan River Lodge ★★★
Specialist tip: Bring binoculars — the Kinabatangan is one of the world's great birding destinations. The Bornean blue-eared kingfisher, storm's stork and the eight hornbill species present in Sabah are all possible from the river.
8

Gomantong Caves & Oxbow Lake

Kinabatangan region

Morning visit to Gomantong Caves — the largest cave system in Sabah, home to millions of swiftlets and bats and one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in Borneo. The caves are also where harvesters collect the edible bird's nests used in bird's nest soup. Afternoon at the oxbow lake adjacent to the lodge — a separate water body created when the river changed course, rich in freshwater fish, false gharials (rare crocodilians) and extensive birdlife. Evening safari.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Kinabatangan River Lodge ★★★
9

Sepilok: Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre

Sepilok

Transfer to Sepilok, home of the world-famous Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre — where orphaned and injured orangutans are nursed back to health and reintroduced to the wild. The 10:00 morning feeding platform attracts wild semi-rehabilitated orangutans descending from the forest canopy; watching a mother with an infant swing through the trees to the platform is among the most moving wildlife experiences anywhere in the world. The adjacent Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is the only place to see the world's smallest bear in a natural setting.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Sepilok Nature Resort ★★★★
Specialist tip: The 10:00 feeding is more reliable for sightings than the 15:00 session. James books the observation platform walkway access in advance to ensure the best viewing position.
10

Sandakan & Turtle Islands

Sandakan

Morning in Sandakan, Sabah's second city and the former capital of British North Borneo: the Agnes Keith House museum (a beautifully restored colonial bungalow with extraordinary views), the Japanese War Memorial, and the atmospheric waterfront fish market. Optional boat trip to Turtle Islands National Park for those interested in sea turtle nesting and hatching (seasonal — James will advise on current conditions).

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Sepilok Nature Resort ★★★★

Transfer to Kota Kinabalu & Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

Final dinner in KK with James — a celebration of eleven days in Borneo.

Afternoon free. Sunset cruise on the South China Sea, with the silhouette of the Tun Mustapha Tower and the islands catching the last light.

The orangutans changed something in us

We have been wildlife travellers for 30 years — Africa, India, Galápagos. Nothing prepared us for the Kinabatangan. James has a naturalist's eye and a poet's ability to describe what he sees. The dawn safari on the third morning — mist on the water, a wild elephant family on the bank, a storm's stork overhead — was one of the greatest mornings of our lives. Singapore was a perfect introduction. Brilliant from start to finish.

Sepilok alone is worth the flight

I am 68 and travelled solo. The Sepilok orangutan feeding at 10:00 was the most moving wildlife experience of my life. A mother with a very young infant came to the platform and sat looking out at us with absolute calm. I am not ashamed to say I cried. The Kinabatangan safaris were extraordinary too. James is an exceptional guide and a kind human being.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this tour suitable for older travellers who are not particularly sporty?

Yes — with some caveats. The Kinabatangan boat safaris are entirely seated and suitable for anyone. The forest walks at Kinabalu Park (lower trails only, not the summit) are well-maintained paths with handrails on steeper sections; they require the ability to walk comfortably for 2–3km on uneven ground. Gomantong Caves involves walking on a boardwalk inside the cave. There is nothing in this itinerary that requires exceptional fitness. The Mount Kinabalu summit trek is an optional add-on, not part of the main tour.

Are wild orangutan sightings guaranteed?

No wildlife sighting can ever be guaranteed — these are wild animals in a vast rainforest. However, the Kinabatangan River is the most reliably productive orangutan-watching location in the world, and James's twice-daily boat safaris on three full days mean your odds are extremely high. In our experience, guests on this tour have a 90%+ sighting rate on the Kinabatangan. The Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre feeding platforms provide an additional, highly reliable daily sighting.

What are the Kinabatangan lodges like?

The lodges are comfortable rather than luxurious — en suite rooms with fans (not always air-conditioned), good local food, and a positioning on the river that is their primary virtue. We choose lodges that are sustainably operated and run by local Sabahan families where possible. If you require air-conditioning throughout, please discuss this with us — there are slightly more comfortable options available at a supplement.

What vaccinations are needed for Borneo?

No vaccinations are compulsory. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and in some cases Rabies (for wildlife-focused travel). Malaria prophylaxis is sometimes recommended for the Kinabatangan and Danum Valley areas — discuss with your GP or travel health clinic at least 8 weeks before departure. Dengue fever is present — use repellent continuously. We provide a detailed health information sheet on booking.
