About this tour

Singapore rewards the curious traveller as few cities in Asia can. In a country smaller than Greater London, you will find the world's finest botanic gardens, a street-food culture that has earned a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listing, colonial architecture of extraordinary elegance, and a modern skyline that seems — each evening, when the light changes over Marina Bay — to have been designed purely to astonish. This seven-night private journey is built around the conviction that Singapore is best experienced slowly. Emma Tan, our Singapore specialist, has lived in the city for eleven years and knows that the real Singapore is not in the tourist brochures but in the hawker centres of Tiong Bahru, the Peranakan shophouses of Joo Chiat, the early-morning silence of the Japanese Garden, and the remarkable cultural patchwork of Kampong Glam, Chinatown and Little India — each a fully realised world within fifteen minutes of the next. You will stay throughout at the Fullerton Hotel, one of Singapore's most storied addresses, housed in the magnificent 1928 General Post Office building overlooking the Singapore River. It is one of those rare hotels where the building itself is the attraction — and its position, equidistant between the colonial civic district and Marina Bay, means that much of what you want to see is a pleasant walk away. The pace is unhurried. On days when the heat builds — and in Singapore it usually does — air-conditioned galleries, cool hawker centres and shaded gardens provide natural breaks. Emma knows exactly when to slow down and when to press on, and her instinct for the right restaurant at the right moment is, according to past guests, worth the entire trip cost on its own.

Singapore's hawker centres are where the real city reveals itself — three meals a day, every day, for a week. — Emma Tan, Asia Specialist

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Singapore

Singapore

Private transfer from Changi Airport — consistently rated the world's best — to the Fullerton Hotel on the Singapore River. The rest of the day is entirely yours: perhaps a slow walk along the river promenade to take in the Cavenagh Bridge, the Merlion and the extraordinary Marina Bay skyline, or simply a long afternoon in your room with room service. Emma joins you this evening for a welcome dinner at a restaurant in the Fullerton's own dining room, overlooking the illuminated river.

Meals: Dinner (welcome dinner at The Fullerton)Walking: approx. 1 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Arrive at Fullerton after 15:00 when the afternoon light on the waterfront is at its most beautiful. The river promenade at dusk, with the CBD towers reflected in the water, is one of Singapore's great free spectacles.
2

Colonial Singapore & the Civic District

Singapore

Emma meets you at 09:00 for a private walking tour of Singapore's colonial heart. The Padang cricket ground — where the Japanese announced their surrender in 1945 — the neoclassical Supreme Court, the Victorian Concert Hall, St Andrew's Cathedral and the Armenian Church (Singapore's oldest Christian church, 1835) chart three centuries of the city's extraordinary history. The National Museum of Singapore, housed in a dome-topped colonial building and thoroughly redesigned in 2015, brings the Singapore Story to vivid life with exceptional interactive exhibits. Afternoon free.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The National Museum's Singapore History Gallery is superb — allow at least 90 minutes. The rooftop café has excellent laksa.
3

Gardens by the Bay & Marina Bay Sands

Singapore

A full morning at Gardens by the Bay — the 100-hectare horticultural marvel built on reclaimed land beside Marina Bay. The two glass conservatories (the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest) are air-conditioned sanctuaries of extraordinary plant life from five continents; the Cloud Forest's 35-metre indoor waterfall is genuinely unlike anything else in Asia. The Supertree Grove is best experienced at dusk, when the 50-metre steel trees illuminate against the darkening sky in the nightly light show. Emma guides you through at your own pace, with time for the OCBC Skyway walkway linking the Supertrees for views over the whole bay. Evening at leisure — the rooftop infinity pool at Marina Bay Sands is open to hotel guests; Emma can arrange a SkyPark observation deck visit for non-guests.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Gardens by the Bay Supertree light show runs at 19:45 and 20:45. The 20:45 show is slightly less crowded. Find a spot on the lawn with a cool drink from the nearby hawker stalls.
4

Chinatown, Tiong Bahru & Hawker Centre Lunch

Singapore

Singapore's Chinatown is one of Asia's most authentic — not merely a tourist quarter but a living neighbourhood where clan associations, traditional medicine shops, goldsmiths, and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (housing a tooth relic of the Gautama Buddha in a tower of 320kg of gold) coexist with contemporary coffee shops and art galleries. Emma then takes you to Tiong Bahru, Singapore's most beloved neighbourhood, a low-rise cluster of 1930s Art Deco housing blocks that today shelters independent bookshops, artisan bakeries and the Tiong Bahru Market — home to what many consider the city's finest chicken rice. Lunch here is included: Emma will guide you through the hawker stalls.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre)Walking: approx. 5 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is most atmospheric at 11:00 when monks are chanting in the main hall. Remove shoes and speak softly — the monks are conducting genuine religious practice, not a performance.
5

Little India, Kampong Glam & the Arab Quarter

Singapore

Two of Singapore's most colourful and culturally rich neighbourhoods in a single morning. Little India's Serangoon Road is an assault on the senses in the best possible way: garland-makers, sari shops, the magnificent Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple (whose gopuram tower teems with mythological figures), and the scent of sandalwood and jasmine from a hundred flower stalls. Kampong Glam, the traditional Malay quarter, is anchored by the golden-domed Sultan Mosque (1932) and the famous Haji Lane — a narrow street of independent boutiques painted in vivid murals. Afternoon at leisure. This evening, Emma has booked a table at her favourite local restaurant in Joo Chiat — Singapore's Peranakan heartland.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner (Joo Chiat Peranakan restaurant)Walking: approx. 5 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Haji Lane is photogenic at any time but magical in the golden hour before sunset. Emma knows which walls have the most interesting murals and the best angle for photographs.
Accessibility: Serangoon Road in Little India has some uneven paving. A folding walking stick is useful. All temples have step-free side entrances.
6

Singapore Botanic Gardens & Dempsey Hill

Singapore

Singapore's Botanic Gardens, opened in 1859 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, represent one of the finest tropical gardens in the world. The National Orchid Garden — the largest display of tropical orchids on earth, with over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids — is the centrepiece of a morning that also includes the rain-forest ecosystem, the bandstand lawn and the heritage trees of the primary rainforest fragment at the garden's heart. Late morning coffee at the Halia restaurant in the ginger garden, then a short drive to Dempsey Hill — the colonial barracks complex turned dining and lifestyle destination — for a long, leisurely lunch at one of Singapore's best restaurants in a setting of tropical gardens and bougainvillea-draped colonial buildings.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Dempsey Hill)Walking: approx. 4 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Botanic Gardens are free to enter (except the Orchid Garden). Go early — by 10:30 it becomes warm. The gardens are at their most beautiful after recent rain, when every leaf glistens.
7

Sentosa Island & Departure

Singapore

A final half-morning at leisure — perhaps a last breakfast on the Fullerton terrace, watching the Singapore River wake up. If your flight departs in the afternoon, Emma can arrange a gentle morning on Sentosa Island: the cable car from Mount Faber offers extraordinary views over the container port and harbour; Siloso Beach provides a final taste of tropical sun before the journey home. Private transfer to Changi Airport.

Singapore surpassed every expectation

We almost didn't book Singapore because we thought it was "just a modern city". Emma transformed our understanding of the place within the first two hours. The Colonial District walk, the hawker centre lunches, the Botanic Gardens — all extraordinary. The Fullerton is a wonderful hotel, and the Marina Bay views from the river promenade at night will stay with us forever. Emma's food knowledge alone is worth the trip.

Perfect solo trip — safe, stimulating and beautifully organised

I travelled solo at 67 and had no concerns at any point. Singapore is exceptionally safe and clean, and Emma was a constant presence who anticipated everything. The Tiong Bahru hawker lunch was the highlight of the whole week — I've been recommending it to everyone I know. The Fullerton is an extraordinary hotel.

The food alone is worth travelling for

We are serious food travellers and Singapore delivered beyond anything we expected. Emma knows every important stall in the city and the stories behind them — the Tiong Bahru chicken rice was the best food we ate all year. Gardens by the Bay at night is spectacular. The pace was absolutely right — we returned to the Fullerton each day satisfied but never exhausted.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Singapore?

British passport holders do not require a visa for Singapore for stays of up to 90 days. Entry is granted on arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Singapore immigration is efficient and straightforward.

Is Singapore suitable for travellers with mobility concerns?

Singapore is one of the most accessible cities in Asia. The city has excellent pavements, lifts in most public buildings, and air-conditioned transport everywhere. All the major attractions on this tour are accessible to travellers who walk comfortably for up to 5km per day. Travellers with more significant mobility requirements should discuss their needs with us at booking — Emma is experienced at adapting itineraries accordingly.

What is the weather like and when is the best time to go?

Singapore is hot and humid year-round (28–33°C). There is no single "dry season" — rain can fall in any month, usually as short sharp afternoon showers rather than prolonged downpours. The coolest months are December to February. We recommend avoiding the wetter months of November and December if possible, though the Fullerton and all attractions are fully air-conditioned.

Is Singapore safe for solo travellers, including women?

Singapore is consistently ranked among the safest cities in the world. Solo travellers — including women — can explore the city independently with complete confidence at any hour. Crime is extremely rare, public transport is excellent and safe, and street harassment is virtually unknown. Having Emma as your guide simply means you go further and deeper into the city's culture.

How expensive is Singapore for food and shopping?

Singapore has two distinct food economies. Hawker centres — the government-subsidised food courts that are central to Singaporean culture — serve magnificent meals for £3–6. Hotel and restaurant dining is more expensive, comparable to a good London restaurant. For shopping, Orchard Road is the city's main retail district, but the independent boutiques of Haji Lane and the antique dealers of Dempsey Hill are more interesting for most of our guests.

Can I extend this tour to include Malaysia?

Yes — Singapore and Malaysia combine exceptionally well. Our 12-night Singapore & Malaysia multi-centre package includes Singapore plus Georgetown in Penang and Kuala Lumpur. Alternatively, we can tailor a bespoke extension to any Malaysian destination. Speak to us when booking.
