About this tour

Singapore and Malaysia share a land border and a ferry crossing, but they inhabit entirely different worlds — and the contrast between them is one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding travel experiences. Singapore is the extraordinary: orderly, vertical, gleaming, a city where the future arrived early and stayed. Malaysia is the atmospheric: layered with centuries of trade routes, colonial architecture, ancient rainforest and a food culture of such complexity and depth that you could spend a lifetime exploring it and still find something new. This 12-night private journey moves between three of the region's finest cities. Three nights in Singapore introduce the Lion City at a manageable pace; three nights in Georgetown — Penang's UNESCO World Heritage capital — reveal arguably the most complete colonial streetscape in Asia; four nights in Kuala Lumpur complete the picture with the Petronas Towers, the extraordinary Batu Caves, the Malay quarter of Kampung Baru and some of the region's finest Chinese and Malay restaurants. Your guide throughout is James Whitfield, who has been living and working across Singapore and Malaysia for twelve years and who brings to this itinerary both a scholar's understanding of the region's complex history and a local's knowledge of where to eat, what to skip and which small lane conceals the most interesting mural.

Penang's Georgetown is the most textured city in Southeast Asia — every lane tells a different story. — James Whitfield, Malaysia & Singapore Specialist

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Singapore

Singapore

Private transfer from Changi Airport to the Fullerton Hotel. Welcome dinner at a restaurant recommended by James along the Singapore River quayside.

Meals: DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
2

Singapore: Colonial District & Marina Bay

Singapore

A morning with James through the Colonial Civic District — the Padang, Raffles Hotel, Victoria Concert Hall and St Andrew's Cathedral — followed by an afternoon exploring Gardens by the Bay's Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories. Evening at leisure; James suggests the Lau Pa Sat hawker centre for dinner.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 5 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
Specialist tip: James always starts the Colonial District walk at Raffles Hotel's Tiffin Room for a mid-morning coffee — the lobby alone is worth the stop.
3

Singapore: Chinatown & Tiong Bahru

Singapore

Chinatown's Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Maxwell Food Centre hawker lunch, and an afternoon exploring Tiong Bahru's Art Deco lanes and independent bookshops. Evening free — James can recommend the best Peranakan restaurant in Joo Chiat if you wish to venture east.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Maxwell Food Centre)Walking: approx. 5 kmHotel: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore ★★★★★
4

Singapore to Georgetown, Penang

Singapore → Penang

Morning transfer to Changi Airport for the included one-hour flight to Penang. James meets you at Penang International Airport and transfers you to the Eastern & Oriental Hotel — the most storied address in Georgetown, opened in 1885 by the same Sarkies Brothers who built Raffles. An orientation stroll through the UNESCO Heritage Zone this evening reveals the extraordinary palimpsest of Chinese clan houses, colonial government buildings and Indian temples that makes Georgetown unique.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Eastern & Oriental Hotel Georgetown ★★★★★
5

Georgetown: Street Art, Shophouses & Temples

Georgetown, Penang

A full day in Georgetown with James. The UNESCO Heritage Zone is a labyrinth of streets where Hokkien clan houses, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and St George's Church stand within a few hundred metres of each other — the physical evidence of the extraordinary multicultural society the Straits Settlements produced. The street art murals commissioned by the city in 2012 — most famously Ernest Zacharevic's "Children on a Bicycle" — are scattered through the lanes and have become as much a part of Georgetown as its architecture.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Clan Jetty hawker stalls)Walking: approx. 6 kmHotel: Eastern & Oriental Hotel Georgetown ★★★★★
Specialist tip: James knows the exact sequence of streets that reveals the murals in their best light and avoids the main tour groups — the "Armenian Street" approach is his preferred route.
6

Penang Hill & Kek Lok Si Temple

Penang

Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera) by funicular railway to the 830-metre summit — cooler than the coast and with panoramic views over Georgetown, the channel and the Kedah hills beyond. Then Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, with its extraordinary seven-storey pagoda blending Thai, Chinese and Burmese architectural styles. Afternoon at leisure. Evening on the Eastern & Oriental's famous Farquhar's Bar — where Somerset Maugham once drank and which still maintains the most colonial atmosphere in Malaysia.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Eastern & Oriental Hotel Georgetown ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Penang Hill in the early morning offers extraordinary clarity of view. James recommends the 08:30 funicular to beat the heat and the school groups.
7

Penang: Nyonya Food Trail & Spice Gardens

Penang

James leads a private Nyonya (Peranakan) food and culture trail — arguably the deepest single food experience available on this tour. Nyonya cuisine, the hybrid food tradition of the Straits Chinese, is one of Southeast Asia's most complex and remarkable: flavoured with lemongrass, belacan (shrimp paste), pandan and coconut milk, it exists only in the Straits Settlements. Visit the Tropical Spice Garden at Teluk Bahang in the afternoon — 500 species of tropical plants in a beautiful hillside setting with sea views.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Nyonya restaurant, Gurney Drive)Walking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Eastern & Oriental Hotel Georgetown ★★★★★
8

Georgetown to Kuala Lumpur

Penang → Kuala Lumpur

Transfer to Penang Airport for the included flight to Kuala Lumpur. Private transfer to the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur — positioned directly at the base of the Petronas Towers, with the towers visible from most rooms. An evening orientation walk with James through the KLCC Park and the glittering base of the towers, followed by dinner in the Petronas Towers' own restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, DinnerWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur ★★★★★
9

Petronas Towers & Merdeka Square

Kuala Lumpur

An early morning visit to the Petronas Towers Skybridge — the highest two-storey bridge in the world, connecting the twin towers at floors 41 and 42 — before the crowds arrive. Then to Merdeka Square, where Malaysia declared independence from Britain in 1957, surrounded by the Tudor Revival Royal Selangor Club, the Jamek Mosque and the remarkable Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The National Textile Museum beside the square houses a superb collection of Malaysian batik and weaving.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 5 kmHotel: Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Petronas Skybridge tickets sell out — James books these weeks in advance. The 09:00 slot in morning light is the most photogenic.
10

Batu Caves & Chinatown

Kuala Lumpur

Batu Caves, 13km north of the city centre, is one of Malaysia's most dramatic Hindu shrines — a series of caverns inside a 400-million-year-old limestone massif, reached by 272 steps past a 43-metre golden statue of Lord Murugan. The Cathedral Cave at the top houses the main Sri Subramaniam Temple and is genuinely spectacular. Then to KL's Chinatown: Petaling Street Market, the magnificent Chan See Shu Yuen Temple and — with James as your guide — a lunch of dim sum at one of the old coffee shops that have operated continuously since the 1940s.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Chinatown dim sum)Walking: approx. 5 kmHotel: Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur ★★★★★
Accessibility: The 272 steps at Batu Caves are unavoidable to reach the main temple. Guests with significant mobility limitations may prefer to visit the smaller temple at the cave base, which is step-free.
11

KL: Little India, Islamic Arts Museum & Melaka Option

Kuala Lumpur

A morning in Brickfields — KL's Little India, a genuine neighbourhood of jasmine-sellers, saree emporiums, banana-leaf rice restaurants and the Sri Kandaswamy Kovil temple. Then the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia — the finest museum of Islamic art in Southeast Asia, with collections from the 7th century to the present across 12 galleries. Afternoon at leisure, or an optional guided visit to Melaka (90 minutes by private car) — the most perfectly preserved Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial town in Southeast Asia, a UNESCO site of extraordinary atmosphere.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Brickfields banana leaf)Walking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur ★★★★★

Kuala Lumpur Departure

Kuala Lumpur

A final morning at leisure — the Mandarin Oriental's pool and spa make departure mornings pleasant. James arranges private transfer to KL International Airport for your onward flight.

Georgetown alone was worth the whole journey

We could have spent the entire two weeks in Georgetown — it is unlike anywhere else in Asia. James's knowledge of the street art, the clan houses, the temples and the food is encyclopaedic. The Eastern & Oriental is wonderfully atmospheric. Singapore and KL were excellent too, but Penang was the revelation.

Three cities, zero stress

I had worried about moving between countries with luggage, guides and different currencies, but James managed everything seamlessly. The three hotels are all excellent in different ways — the Fullerton for grandeur, the E&O for atmosphere, the Mandarin Oriental KL for the extraordinary Petronas Towers view. The food throughout was outstanding.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need visas for both Singapore and Malaysia?

British passport holders require no visa for either Singapore (up to 90 days) or Malaysia (up to 90 days). Entry is granted on arrival in both countries. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from the region.

How do we get from Penang to Kuala Lumpur?

Your tour includes a short-haul flight from Penang International Airport to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, approximately 55 minutes. This is far more comfortable than the 4-hour road journey. All flights are in economy class with a major carrier; upgrades to business class can be arranged.

Is the Batu Caves visit accessible for people with knee or joint problems?

The main Cathedral Cave at Batu Caves requires climbing 272 concrete steps with handrails. This is the only way to reach the main temple. Guests with significant knee or joint problems may find this challenging. We can arrange a visit to the excellent Dark Cave and the smaller temple at the base, which is step-free, as an alternative. Please discuss with us at booking.

Can we spend more time in Penang?

Yes — Penang is one of those places that rewards extra time. We can extend your Georgetown stay to 5 or 6 nights and add a day trip to Ipoh (a fascinating town 2 hours south with outstanding coffee and dim sum) or a slower exploration of Penang's Balik Pulau district with its durian orchards and traditional Malay villages.
