About this tour
Thailand has layers that most visitors never reach. This 15-day private journey peels back several of them — from the world's oldest surviving Thai kingdom at Sukhothai to the hill tribes and Golden Triangle of Chiang Rai, from Bangkok's imperial grandeur to the sun-bleached limestone cliffs and mangrove-fringed lagoons of Koh Lanta, one of the Andaman coast's last genuinely unspoilt islands. Sophie Beaumont guides the northern half of this journey — Bangkok, the drive through Sukhothai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai — with the depth of someone who has spent nine years understanding what makes northern Thailand extraordinary beyond its famous temples. The southern leg brings a dedicated Koh Lanta specialist to introduce you to the island's marine national park, sea kayaking routes and fishing village communities that most visitors on the more famous islands never encounter. Three nights at the Dhara Dhevi in Chiang Mai deserve particular mention. This is not so much a hotel as a 60-acre recreation of a Lanna royal village — all peaked rooftops, rice paddies and antique pavilions — and it remains one of the most extraordinary luxury experiences in Southeast Asia. Two nights at Sukhothai's Si Satchanalai resort, a stones' throw from the UNESCO-listed ruins, and four nights at the Pimalai on Koh Lanta complete an itinerary that genuinely rewards the extra days.
“Designed by Sophie Beaumont, our Thailand specialist with nine years based in Chiang Mai.”

What our guests say
Guest reviews
The most complete Thailand experience we can imagine
“We've been to Thailand four times and this was by far the best trip. Sukhothai at dawn on a bicycle will stay with me for the rest of my life — the ruins emerging from the mist in the early light, completely alone in this ancient city. The Dhara Dhevi is extraordinary. Koh Lanta is the Phuket of 30 years ago — completely beautiful and unhurried.”

Sophie is exceptional
“I travel frequently and have had many guides over the years. Sophie is in a class of her own — genuinely knowledgeable, warm, funny, and she speaks Thai with real fluency which opens doors no guidebook can. The Golden Triangle day was fascinating. Pimalai was paradise.”

Worth every penny of the longer itinerary
“I was going to book the 12-day version but my wife persuaded me to do the 15. She was right. The extra days for Sukhothai and Chiang Rai transformed the trip from "very good Thailand holiday" to "genuinely formative experience". The ruins at Si Satchanalai are staggering and completely crowd-free.”

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the cycling at Sukhothai suitable for someone who hasn't cycled in years?
Yes — the historical park is completely flat and the distances between ruins are short. E-bicycles are available for anyone who prefers assisted pedalling. Most guests who haven't cycled in years find it completely manageable and enormously enjoyable.
How long is the drive from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai?
Approximately 5 hours with stops. We break the journey at Wang Kum Kam, an ancient archaeological site near Chiang Mai, and at a recommended lunch stop. The drive passes through beautiful countryside and the time passes quickly.
Is Koh Lanta better than Phuket or Koh Samui?
Different, rather than better. Koh Lanta has less development, cleaner coral, fewer tourists and a quieter atmosphere. It lacks the infrastructure of Phuket (no big shopping malls, fewer international restaurants) but gains enormously in tranquillity and natural beauty. Guests who value peace and ecology over convenience consistently rate it their favourite Thai beach destination.
Can I add nights in Koh Lanta before or after the group departures?
Yes — Pimalai is an excellent resort for an extended beach stay. We can arrange pre- or post-tour extensions at the same resort or at other properties on the island.
How does the Chiang Rai overnight connect back to the Dhara Dhevi?
On Day 10, after the Golden Triangle excursion, we return to Chiang Mai for the final night at the Dhara Dhevi. On Day 11 we fly south. The overnight in Chiang Rai (Day 9) is a standalone night before the Golden Triangle day, and we return to Chiang Mai on Day 10.
What makes the Dhara Dhevi so special?
It is essentially a recreation of a Lanna royal village — 60 acres of rice paddies, teak pavilions, antique Burmese timber structures and lotus ponds — with private-pool villas set within this extraordinary landscape. Nothing about it feels like a conventional hotel. It is theatrical in the best possible way, and the service matches the setting.
