About this tour

Some journeys are defined by where you go; this one is also defined by where you stay. Our Grand Heritage Journey threads three of Southeast Asia's most rewarding countries into a single, unhurried loop — and rests it each night in the region's legendary landmark hotels, the grand colonial-era addresses where the great travellers of the past once signed the register. You will sleep beneath the slow ceiling fans and polished teak of the Eastern & Oriental in George Town, opened in 1885 and the equal of any hotel in Asia; in the Art Deco grandeur of Kuala Lumpur's 1932 Majestic; and amid the French-quarter elegance of Hanoi's old town. Between them: golden temples and gentle northern hills in Thailand, the lantern-lit lanes of Hoi An and the still water of Halong Bay in Vietnam, and the extraordinary heritage streets and food of Malaysia. We have designed it specifically for the way mature travellers like to move. Internal flights carry you between the three countries, so there are no punishing overland days; hotel stays are two or three nights apiece, long enough to truly settle into each remarkable building; and most cultural mornings are followed by a free afternoon. The walking is gentle and almost always optional, the transfers are private and air-conditioned, and your guide is never more than a phone call away. And everywhere, the food. You will eat boat noodles by a Bangkok canal, learn to fold a Vietnamese spring roll in Hoi An, and follow your nose through the hawker stalls of George Town — a UNESCO city that many of our travellers name as the single best meal of their lives. This is Southeast Asia at its most gracious: rich, storied and never rushed.

Designed by Sophie Beaumont, our Thailand specialist, with regional partners in Hanoi, Hoi An and Penang.

Why this works for travellers over 50

  • Step-free arrival hotels, lift access where possible and a clear accessibility note for every single day

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Arrival in Bangkok

Bangkok

Private transfer from Suvarnabhumi Airport to the Riva Surya, a contemporary 4-star hotel on the banks of the Chao Phraya in the historic Banglamphu quarter. The rest of the day is yours to recover from the flight, with a riverside pool and an evening drink overlooking the water.

Walking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Riva Surya Bangkok ★★★★
Specialist tip: Resist the urge to nap for long after you land. A gentle walk along the river at dusk and an early dinner will reset your body clock far more kindly than a daytime sleep.
Accessibility: Lift access to all floors; step-free entrance from the porte-cochère. Wheelchair-accessible rooms available on request.
2

Grand Palace & the Temple Quarter

Bangkok

A morning with your private guide exploring the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, home of the Emerald Buddha, followed by the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho. After a relaxed lunch we cross the river by ferry to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. The afternoon is free to rest before an optional evening canal cruise.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Riva Surya Bangkok ★★★★
Specialist tip: The Grand Palace enforces a strict dress code — shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Wear lightweight long trousers or a long skirt and bring a light scarf; it saves queuing for the cover-up hire desk.
Accessibility: The Grand Palace grounds are largely flat but feature some uneven stone and a few raised thresholds. Your guide sets an unhurried pace with regular rests.
3

Bangkok Markets & Flavours

Bangkok

A gentler day given over to Bangkok's food culture. We visit a fresh market with your guide, then enjoy a hands-on introduction to Thai cooking at a riverside cookery school, preparing and eating a four-course lunch. The afternoon is free — perhaps the riverside flower market or simply the hotel pool.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Riva Surya Bangkok ★★★★
Specialist tip: Tell us in advance about any chilli tolerance or dietary needs — the cookery school happily adapts every dish, and northern Thai food can be milder and just as delicious.
4

Fly to Chiang Mai

Bangkok → Chiang Mai

A late-morning flight north to Chiang Mai (included), leaving the morning free in Bangkok. Private transfer to the Tamarind Village, a serene old-city hotel built around a 200-year-old tamarind tree. The afternoon is at leisure to settle into the cooler, calmer pace of the north.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai ★★★★
Specialist tip: Chiang Mai sits at altitude in the hills and evenings between November and February can feel genuinely cool — pack a light jumper or shawl for dinner.
Accessibility: Ground-floor rooms available; the hotel is a single low-rise property with mostly step-free garden walkways.
5

Chiang Mai Old City & Doi Suthep

Chiang Mai

A morning exploring the walled old city on foot and by private vehicle — Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh and the quiet lanes between them. After lunch we drive up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the mountain temple overlooking the city, returning in time for a free evening at the Sunday walking street or a riverside restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai ★★★★
Specialist tip: Take the funicular up to Doi Suthep even if you fancy the steps — save your legs for the temple terrace, where the views over Chiang Mai are the real reward.
Accessibility: Doi Suthep has a steep flight of 306 steps to the temple, but a funicular tram runs alongside for those who prefer to ride up.
6

Hill Country & Ethical Elephants

Chiang Mai region

A morning in the gentle hill country outside the city, visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary where the animals are observed and fed rather than ridden. We continue to a hillside Karen community for a relaxed lunch, then return to Chiang Mai with a free afternoon and evening.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai ★★★★
Specialist tip: The sanctuary is far more rewarding than the photo-op elephant camps. You watch the herd behave naturally — and you can stay as close to or as far from the animals as you like.
Accessibility: Sanctuary paths are flat but unpaved and can be muddy in shoulder season. Sturdy flat shoes recommended; viewing areas have seating.
7

Fly to Hanoi

Chiang Mai → Hanoi

A direct flight from Chiang Mai to Hanoi (included), crossing into Vietnam. Private transfer to the Hôtel de l'Opera, an MGallery property in the heart of the French Quarter, a few minutes' stroll from the Opera House and the lake. The evening is free to ease into Hanoi's atmospheric old streets.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Hôtel de l'Opera Hanoi - MGallery ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Hanoi traffic looks daunting but locals cross slowly and steadily, never running. Your guide will walk you across the first few times until you have the knack.
Accessibility: Full lift access and step-free lobby. The surrounding French Quarter pavements are broad and largely level.
8

Old Quarter & Lakeside Hanoi

Hanoi

A morning on foot through the Old Quarter's thirty-six guild streets, pausing at Hoan Kiem Lake and the Ngoc Son temple on its little island. We stop for Hanoi's famous egg coffee, then visit the serene Temple of Literature. The afternoon is free, with an optional evening water-puppet show.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 4 kmHotel: Hôtel de l'Opera Hanoi - MGallery ★★★★★
Specialist tip: Egg coffee sounds alarming and tastes like tiramisu in a cup — do try it. The original café, Giang, is hidden down an alley your guide will know.
Accessibility: The Old Quarter has narrow, busy pavements and some uneven kerbs. We keep the walking gentle and can substitute a cyclo (pedicab) ride for any stretch.
9

Halong Bay Overnight Cruise

Hanoi → Halong Bay

A private transfer (around 2.5 hours on the new expressway) brings us to the coast, where we board a comfortable overnight cruise among the limestone karsts of Halong Bay. The afternoon unfolds at a wonderfully slow pace — a visit to a sea cave, optional kayaking or a swim, then sunset cocktails on deck and a seafood dinner as the islands turn to silhouettes.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Halong Bay overnight cruise (deluxe cabin) ★★★★
Specialist tip: Choose a cabin on the upper deck if you can — the private balconies are worth it for that first morning, when the mist lifts off the karsts and the bay is utterly silent.
Accessibility: Boarding involves a short transfer by tender and some steps onto the cruise vessel; crew assist throughout. Cabins are en-suite with step-in showers.
10

Halong Morning & Fly to Da Nang for Hoi An

Halong Bay → Hoi An

An early Tai Chi session on deck for the willing, then brunch as we cruise back to port. We transfer to Hanoi airport for a short flight south to Da Nang (included), and a private transfer to Hoi An, where the riverside Anantara Hoi An is your home for three nights. Evening free among the lantern-lit lanes.

Meals: Breakfast, BrunchWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: Anantara Hoi An Resort ★★★★
Specialist tip: Hoi An's old town is at its most magical after dark when the silk lanterns come on. Your first evening, just wander — there is no need to plan a thing.
Accessibility: The Anantara is a low-rise riverside resort with mostly step-free garden paths and ground-floor rooms available.
11

Hoi An Old Town & Lantern Lanes

Hoi An

A morning walking tour of the UNESCO-listed old town with your guide — the Japanese Covered Bridge, the old merchant houses, the Fujian Assembly Hall and the central market. The afternoon is free for tailoring, coffee by the river, or the hotel pool, before an optional evening boat ride to release a paper lantern on the Thu Bon.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Anantara Hoi An Resort ★★★★
Specialist tip: Hoi An is Vietnam's tailoring capital. If you fancy a made-to-measure linen jacket or dress, order it on this first morning so there is time for a fitting before you leave.
Accessibility: The old town is flat and largely traffic-free, making it one of the easiest historic centres in Asia to explore on foot. Some shophouse interiors have a single raised threshold.
12

Hoi An Cookery & Free Time

Hoi An

A gentle morning that begins with a basket-boat paddle through the coconut palms and a market visit, followed by a hands-on Vietnamese cooking class — fresh spring rolls, the local speciality "white rose" dumplings and a fragrant noodle bowl, all eaten together. The afternoon and evening are entirely free.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 2 kmHotel: Anantara Hoi An Resort ★★★★
Specialist tip: Central Vietnamese cooking is the country's most refined. The "white rose" dumplings you make today are found almost nowhere else in Vietnam.
13

Fly to Kuala Lumpur

Hoi An → Kuala Lumpur

A morning flight from Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur (included), crossing into Malaysia. Private transfer to the Majestic Hotel, a restored colonial landmark beside the old railway station. The afternoon is free, perhaps for high tea in the hotel's celebrated Orchid Conservatory.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 1 kmHotel: The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur ★★★★★
Specialist tip: The Majestic's afternoon tea in the glass Orchid Conservatory is a Kuala Lumpur institution and books up — let us reserve it for you before you arrive.
Accessibility: Full lift access and step-free entrance. The Majestic is one of KL's most accessible heritage hotels.
14

Kuala Lumpur to George Town, Penang

Kuala Lumpur → Penang

A morning tour of Kuala Lumpur — the Petronas Towers from the park below, the Islamic Arts Museum and the city's colonial core — before a short flight north to Penang (included). Private transfer to the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, George Town's grande dame on the seafront. Evening free to begin exploring the heritage streets.

Meals: BreakfastWalking: approx. 3 kmHotel: Eastern & Oriental Hotel, George Town ★★★★★
Specialist tip: George Town is compact and flat — the perfect city to explore slowly on foot. We keep this final stretch deliberately gentle so you finish the trip rested, not frazzled.
Accessibility: Lift access throughout the E&O; the seafront promenade outside is flat and step-free. KL touring is mostly by private vehicle with short walks.
15

George Town Heritage, Food & Departure

George Town, Penang → home

A final morning walking tour of George Town's UNESCO heritage core — the clan jetties, the colourful street art, the temples and the famous hawker stalls, with time to taste Penang's legendary laksa and char kway teow. Depending on your flight, a day room is held at the hotel before your private transfer to Penang airport for onward connections.

Meals: Breakfast, LunchWalking: approx. 3 km
Specialist tip: Save your appetite for this last morning. Penang's hawker food is, for many of our travellers, the single best meal of the whole journey — go hungry.
Accessibility: George Town's heritage core is flat with broad five-foot-way covered walkways; seating and shade are plentiful for frequent rests.

Three countries, and never once felt rushed

We were nervous that three countries in just over a fortnight would be exhausting, but it was beautifully judged. The internal flights meant no horrible coach days, and the two and three-night stays gave us time to breathe. Halong Bay on the little cruise boat was a dream, and George Town's food was the surprise of the trip. Sophie planned every detail.

Perfect for a solo traveller in her sixties

I travelled alone and felt looked after from the moment I landed. The waived single supplement on the October date was a lovely touch, the heritage hotels were a treat in themselves, and the guides in each country were kind and patient. Hoi An after dark with the lanterns reflected in the river is something I will never forget.

The hotels alone were worth it

We booked this for our ruby wedding anniversary and the heritage hotels made it feel like an occasion — the Hanoi MGallery and the E&O in Penang especially, where we had a gin on the seafront verandah at sunset. The cooking classes in Bangkok and Hoi An were huge fun too. My only quibble is that the Kuala Lumpur night at the Majestic was too short; we'd happily have stayed two.

The accessibility notes made it possible for us

My wife uses a stick and we always worry about pace. The day-by-day accessibility notes were spot on, and the funicular up Doi Suthep meant she could see the mountain temple without the steps. The team rang us beforehand to talk through every concern. We could not fault it.

A proper introduction to Southeast Asia

A first trip to this part of the world and exactly the right way to do it. You get a real flavour of each country and come home knowing which one you want to return to and explore in depth. For us it was Vietnam. The lantern boat ride in Hoi An and the egg coffee in Hanoi were highlights.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Isn't three countries in fifteen days too much for a relaxed holiday?

It is a fair worry, and the itinerary is built specifically to avoid it. We use short internal flights rather than long overland drives, keep each hotel stay to two or three nights, and build a free afternoon into most travel days. Walking is gentle and optional. The result feels varied and rich rather than rushed — but if you would prefer even more downtime, we can easily add a night or two anywhere.

What makes this a "Grand Heritage" journey?

The defining feature is where you stay. Rather than standard city hotels, this journey places you inside three of Southeast Asia's great landmark properties — the Eastern & Oriental in George Town (opened 1885), the Majestic in Kuala Lumpur (1932) and a French-quarter heritage hotel in Hanoi — alongside excellent 4-star hotels elsewhere. These are living pieces of history, full of character, and staying in them turns a wonderful itinerary into a genuinely memorable occasion. The price is land-only; international flights are quoted separately.

What do the international flights cost and can you book them?

Yes. We are an ATOL-protected travel company and are happy to quote and book your return flights from any UK airport, flying into Bangkok and home from Penang. As a guide, indirect economy fares typically start from around £650–£850 return depending on season and how far ahead you book. Just ask and we will include them in your quote.

Is the Halong Bay cruise suitable if I have limited mobility?

Boarding the cruise involves a short tender transfer and a few steps onto the boat, with crew on hand to assist. The cabins are en-suite with step-in showers. Many travellers with a walking stick manage perfectly well; if you use a wheelchair we will discuss the boarding carefully with you and can suggest alternatives. Please tell us your needs and we will tailor accordingly.

What is the best time of year to travel?

Our departures favour the cooler, drier months from October to March, which suit all three countries well. Thailand and Vietnam are pleasant and largely dry, and Malaysia is warm year-round. Northern Vietnam (Hanoi and Halong Bay) can be cool and a little misty in January and February — atmospheric, but pack a light jacket.

How much walking is involved each day?

Very manageable — an average of around 2 to 3 kilometres on touring days, with the most being about 4 kilometres in Bangkok and Hanoi. Walking is broken up with frequent café and temple stops, there is always seating nearby, and your guide sets an unhurried pace. Several days are deliberately free or restful.

Do I need visas for all three countries?

British passport holders receive a visa exemption on arrival in Thailand and in Malaysia, with no advance arrangement needed. Vietnam currently requires an e-visa for most visitors, which is straightforward to obtain online before you travel — we send full step-by-step guidance and our team can help if you would like it.

Will I really be travelling privately and not in a coach group?

Yes. This is a private escorted journey for just you and your travelling companions. You have your own guide and private air-conditioned vehicle in each country, and the pace is yours to set. There are no strangers on the trip and no fixed group timetable.
